When an extra deck monster is returned to the hand, it gets returned to the extra deck. So G.K.'s Ancient Gear Howitzer would be returned to the extra deck.

Well, it was still destroyed by Mist Wurm's attack
No, Ancient Gear Howitzer was returned to the extra deck by Mist Wurm's effect. It wasn't destroyed by battle.

Ancient Gear Howitzer is unaffected by all effects of other cards. So it was not returned to the Extra Deck, and remained on the field. So when Mist Wurm attacked G.K. directly, it was stopped by Howitzer, who was destroyed. Therefore, G.K. triggered its ability to automatically summon any monster from his Deck.
Oh. Gotcha.
I never used ancient gear decks, so this is all new to me.

Yeah, the anime is really screwed up. They call them holograms, but they actually hit hard, as if they have mass. I'm just going off of that.

They attempted a fix with Action Dueling though. And remember, in shadow dueling the monsters are real.
