James pulled up into Independence, Missouri. It had been a long journey already, traveling countless miles from his home in Kent, England. It was a lot cheaper to cross the Oregon Trail than to go around Cape Horn. James was fairly rich. but he didn't want to spend that kind of money. He thought about all the newspapers that described the many deaths on the trail, but they didn't discourage him.
He hopped off the wagon that was being driven for him, and looked around. He needed a party to travel with, because traveling the trail alone just seemed suicidal, but before he looked for a good party to travel with, he stopped in a few of the stores. He knew that a good party would provide the wagon and the oxen, and maybe even food. He just wanted to pick up a few spices and medicines for a couple of cents.
He decided to walk into a store known as "George's General Store." He looked around, and asked the shop owner a few things about the trail, but he didn't seem to have ever been along the trail. He did hope to buy a few things to help him strike gold in Oregon.
