A personal roleplay between me and @EmoKitty21.

---

It was a beautiful summer morning in Vermilion City. The rising sun painted the sky with vibrant reds and oranges while wild bird pokemon were on the wind, singing their good mornings to the new day. Among the few that were up this early where brothers Aiden and Lucas Trystan, ready to start their new adventure with their childhood friends and traveling companions, Nick and Zack Young.

Aiden yawned, not quite awake enough to be excited. He checked his watch as he and Lucas waited outside of where their two best friends lived. They all had been planning this trip for a long time. A promise between them all, to leave Kanto behind when they were ready and start a new journey. A new life. Away from the dark memories of their past. And today was the day they fulfilled that promise.

Knight, Aiden's Gallade, let out his own yawn. "Aw, don't start that again..." Aiden grumbled tiredly, unable to keep himself from following suit and letting out another monstrous yawn. Knight chuckled into his hand and gave him a shrug. "Man, why'd we have to be up so early Lucas? The ferry's not gonna leave for another hour." The older brother questioned as he looked at Lucas.

Lucas was sitting against the side of the house fiddling with his guitar and playing some tunes while they waited, a peaceful look on his soft features. Sitting next to him was was his beloved Shiny Audino, Mika, who was leaning up against him and enjoying the soothing sounds of his acoustic guitar as the feelers on her ears wiggled happily.

"Because if we didn't get up when we did, you wouldn't have gotten up at all, you lazy doofus." Lucas said simply, sending him a small smirk.

Aiden chuckled in response. "Touché."

Nick was up earlier then planned. Today was the start of his new journey. He and his brother would be on their way to a new region. With his childhood friend, Aiden. He tugged on his beanie and was out if his bedroom. He hoped his brother Zack was up. He always seemed to be heavy sleeper and probably slept through his alarm.

Zack on the other hand was still in bed. The alarm could be heard throughout the room. He was startled awake from the loud ringing. He grumbled and got up. "Uggggh why did I agree to get up this early again?" He looked towards his shiny Charizard who was awake and staring at him. She was his first pokemon. He ended up ready and waiting in the living room for Nick.

Nick had all of his bags packed and ready to start his way out of the house. He grabbed his violin and started to strum a tune as he walked out of his bedroom and led the way out of the house. He stopped playing as he reached the two outside. "Hey guys. I am glad you two are ready" he was followed by his Shiny Gardevoir and Zack's Charazard.

Zack was behind Nick as he walked out of the house he walked up to Lucas. They had been friends for a long time. He was glad that they would be going as well.

"Wha-?" Aiden blurted as the two exited the house, startling him a bit. He was staring off into space, as usual. He smiled when he realized they were up and ready. "Oh, hey guys. Yeah, Mr. Bright Eyed and Bushy Tailed over here made sure we were all packed up and out the door by the crack of dawn." He nudged Lucas' shoulder teasingly.

The younger brother giggled a bit, pushing his black and purple bangs out of his eyes gently. "Well hey, Mr. Bright Eyed and Bushy Tailed wanted to make sure we wouldn't miss our ferry." Mika smiled happily at the scene, her feelers bobbing as they sensed happiness in the four friends. She gave a knowing glance to Knight, who nodded back in delight. Their trainers hadn't been this happy in a long time. They both knew how this adventure would renew their hopes of putting everything behind them.

Lucas put his guitar back in it's case and stood up, slinging it over his shoulder in one fluid motion. He smiled happily at Zack and gave him his usual greeting hug. Aiden couldn't help but yawn again, still not exactly awake, and glanced at Nick with a silly lopsided smile and a friendly twinkle in his eyes.

Nick gave Aiden a playful nudge and put his violin in it's case. He could not wait to get going. Gradevior hugged Knight in greeting. She was glad that they would be going with their trainers.

Charizard who was still a little sleepy went inside her pokeball. She wanted to sleep a little more. Zack who was dragging behind leaned up against the house. If they were not careful he would fall asleep there.

"Come on sleepy head we have boat to catch." With that Nick grabbed Aiden by the wrist and started to pull him to the fiery.

Gradevior looked to Knight and winked as Aiden was pulled by her trainer.

Aiden chuckled as he was pulled along, following his best friend helplessly. Not that he would need much convincing, he knew he'd follow Nick to the ends of the earth and back if it meant staying by his side. They'd been practically inseparable since they were kids, always tackling what life had to give together, like a team.

Knight hugged her back, giving her that knowing smile as the two trainers headed off. He gestured for her to follow and began to follow them.

"Hey, wait up!" Lucas stuttered, following after them as well. He stopped to look back at his sleepy friend with a smile, "C'mon Zack! I'm so excited!" He giggled, skipping off after the others. Mika cooed sweetly, following after her trainer.

Nick was excited. They were finally going to go somewhere else besides being in Kanto. This would be their first time out of the region. He knew that he could face anything as long as Aiden was with him. Even the ocean was not as scary with Aiden there with him.

Gradevior followed behind her trainer. She was happy to see Nick happy this early in the morning. Though it was probably being close to Aiden she knew that he had a major crush on him for the longest time. Maybe this will be the journey that they both figure out they like one another.

Zack slowly made his way behind everyone. He was tired but the walk to the pier helped to wake him up. By the time he got there, he was wide awake. He stayed by Lucas' side the whole time.

Aiden walked alongside Nick, enjoying the ocean breeze and admiring the glittering surface of the water. And before he knew it, they were approaching the ticket booth for the Harbor.

He stepped up to the man at the booth. "Four tickets for the ferry to Slateport City." His friendly smile faltered when he noticed the man staring at his scar with an odd look on his face. He winced back slightly, his hair falling into his face to cover it. He hated it. The constant reminder of what his father put him and Lucas through. Right there, evident on his own features for everyone to see.

"Er, yes! Of course, sir! Here you are." The man said after snapping out of his stupor and seeing how uncomfortable he'd made him. He handed him the tickets, and Aiden handed him the money he and Lucas had earned performing in local Cafés and Bars, and sometimes at parks for passersby. And without another word, he handed everyone their tickets and headed towards the docks. Knight gave a warning look to the man in the booth, before following after his trainer.

Lucas noticed the change in Aiden's demeanor and frowned. He knew exactly what had happened. He wanted nothing more than to turn back time and make things right again for his brother. He didn't deserve any of the treatment he got. But that wasn't possible, so instead, he was constantly prepped for damage control. It was the least he could. He huffed, following after his brother with Mika right behind him.

Nick seeing that his friend was insulted took the ticket and ran after him. He took a running leap and almost tackled Aiden to the ground. He did not weigh much for his age. He was fairly small. Gradevior took after her trainer. She hoped ro reach him before Aiden was tackled she was too late.

Zack walked after the others. He did give the guy a stern look though. He hated to see his friends being treated like that.

Aiden stumbled a bit when Nick tackled him, tripping on an uneven board and tumbling to the ground, pulling Nick with him. He laughed as all this was happening, catching his friend in his arms as the smaller boy landed on top of him. He looked up at his best friend with that goofy lopsided grin, his eyes shining brightly from the reflection of the water as they stared into Nick's.

Lucas covered his mouth with both hands, concealing his ear to ear grin at the tender sight. He'd secretly been wanting Nick and Aiden to get together for a long time now, but they would always dance around the subject and make jokes about it, brushing it off like it wasn't obvious.

Knight just grinned, folding his arms and shaking his head at their trainers' silliness.

Nick grined when he saw Aiden smile. There was that smile that he was missing so much. He leaned down and hugged him before he got up and held out his hands to help Aiden on the ground. "Come on we need to get on the boat before they kick us off for being too silly.

Zack wanting to keep the mood light, smiled and did something a little out there. He walked up behind Lucas and picked him up and threw him over his shoulder and jogged up to the ramp of the ship. He had a tight grip on his friend.

Aiden took his hand and stood up. He cleared his throat a bit, trying to force out the fluttering in his chest. "Yeah, s'good idea." He chuckled, shoving his hands in his pockets and heading towards their designated dock, Knight by his side.

Lucas was completely caught off guard when Zack picked him up, and he squeaked in surprise. "Woah!" He giggled, holding onto Zack's shoulders. "What are you doing?" He managed to asked through his giggle fit. Mika smiled warmly and followed after.

Nick followed Aiden. He did chuckle as Lucas was picked up. He always thought that his little bro had a crush on his best friend. He hoped this journey would help them both realize that they belonged together.

"Well you were moving way too slow for me so I thought I would help you out with that." He walked ahead and only set Lucas down as they got to the place where they register their tickets and check luggage.

Lucas was finally able to overcome his giggle fit when Zack put him down, pushing his bangs out of his face with a soft blush painting his cheeks. "Sorry." He smiled sheepishly. Aiden and Knight caught up and they both handed over their tickets. Once everyone had their ticket punched and their luggage loaded, they were ready to board.

Aiden led the way up the ramp, looking around at all the other people, pokemon and workers on board. It was a bigger ship than he had originally thought. He smiled as the realization finally kicked in. This was it. They were finally leaving Kanto and all the horrible memories associated with it. Maybe this was his and Lucas' first step to truly letting go. He took a breath of fresh air, leaning against the railings and staring out at the endless horizon before them. He was ready.

Nick was right beside Aiden as he took his first step on the ramp. He felt the fresh air hit his face. He was glad he was able to convince Aiden and Lucas to getting out of Kanto. This will be a fresh start for all of them. He had somethings that he would rather keep secret and getting out of the region would be the best plan.

Zack was just glad to be getting to go somewhere other then Kanto for a change. He decided that he would be a little silly and pick up Lucas again and carry him over his shoulder up the ramp. He really only did it to be in contact with the dark haired young man.

Lucas started giggling all over again as he was whisked away once more, letting out a cute little snort. "Aw, Zack, you made me snort, gross!" He laughed, sticking his tongue out and nudging his shoulder playfully. Mika was chasing them around cheerfully, enjoying this game.

Aiden smiled at the younger boys being goofy and having a good time. Lucas always seemed so much more alive when he was around Zack. The boy just brought out something in Lucas that no one else could. He chuckled, then looked back out at the near glowing water. A thought crossed his mind as he watched the calm waves rolling, and looked at Nick with slight concern. He'd always known of his friend's fear of the open water. "You gonna be okay? We're gonna be on this boat for a few hours at the least."

Nick was a little nervous to be out on the see again. The last time he was out in the water he almost lost his life. He was just glad that someone was looking out for him. "I will be ok. Just don't go too far away ok? I don't want to be alone on the boat."

"Well what you find gross I found incredibly cute." Zack smiled at Lucas. He was glad he made him that happy. He loved that he could do that for someone.

Aiden gave Nick his signature lopsided grin and nodded, ruffling his hair affectionately. "Of course. You know I'd get lost without ya anyway." He chuckled with a wink.

Lucas blushed at Zack's straightforward statement, making his tummy do flips. He smiled softly, opening his mouth to say something when he was interrupted by the Captain speaking through the intercom.

"Good morning ladies and gentlemen, this is your Captain speaking. We'll be leaving the dock shortly on our voyage to Slateport City in Hoenn. Estimated time of arrival is approximately 4 hours. Thank you for joining us today and enjoy your stay."

Nick blushed as Aiden spoke. He really was glad that he was going with him. He smiled and walked closer to Aiden he was about to do something that would change their relationship but was startled when the Captain spoke.

Zack looked towards the deck of the boat. There was people everywhere they looked. He was glad that they would not be on the boat long. He was afraid that his brother would be able to handle a longer trip there. That was when his thoughts were broken by the sight of a very large buffet table. It was stacked high with food.

Aiden, oblivious to his friend's ruined plan, smiled at Nick and plopped down on one of the lounge chairs that were set up in groups around the deck. He sighed contentedly, making himself comfortable. He patted the seat next to him for Nick to sit and looked back out at the endless horizon. "Gonna be here for a while, might as well get comfy, right?" Knight had taken a seat beside Aiden by the railing, letting his legs dangle off the edge as he looked out at the water.

Lucas chuckled as he noticed Zack looking at the glorious buffet. "Hungry?"

Nick sat down. He was too nervous to eat anything. He leaned back in the lounge and closed his eyes. Gradevior sat down near Gallade. She was glad that they were going somewhere else. She especially was glad that the other was going. She dis not know what she would have done without him on this trip.

Zack looked towards Lucas. "I am always hungry. What somwthing before I raid the table? There will probably not be much left after I am done."

Knight gave Gardevoir a slightly lopsided smiled, his trainer's mannerisms were rubbing off on him. Aiden was enjoying the ocean breeze running through his hair as he stared out at the endless water. He could see wild Mantine and Magicarp splashing and playing in the distance and smiled.

Lucas took a croissant he couldn't resist and smiled. "Okay! Commencing project 'going ham' in 3... 2... 1!" He waved his arm like a race flag, signaling Zack's inevitable attack on the buffet.

Nick had his eyes closed he did not want to see the ocean much on this trip. He hated the sight of it. Ever since he was little. He almost drowned in this very ocean. He was saved thanks to a very special pokemon. "Hey Aiden?"

Zack took a plate and started to pile it high with many different kinds of sweets and other various foods. He ended up getting a another plate seeing as the first was too full. He then took both plates to a nearby table. As soon as he set them down he got up and carried Lucas to the seat right across from him. He wanted to make it very clear that the other was to sit and keep him company.

"Hm?" Aiden turned around to look at Nick, sitting up a bit and smiling. "What's up buddy?"

Lucas giggled again, starting to get used to it at this point, but he wasn't complaining. He enjoyed the attention. He sat down across from Zack and tore a piece off of his croissant, nibbling on it here and there as he watched the calm waves for a moment. He looked back at his friend, a curious look in his blue and green eyes. "Hey, what kind of pokemon do you think we'll see in Hoenn? Do you think they'll be like the ones at home? I'm excited, but I'm also kinda nervous about it..."

Nick had a bit of a far away look to him. He was thinking about that day. "Do you remember the last time we was this close to the ocean?"

Zack had been basically shoving food into his mouth at this point. He was almost done with his first plate of food when Lucas asked his question. He took a napkin and whiped his mouth before he answered. "We would probably see some pokemon that we normally would not have encountered in Kanto. Hoenn has a different climate to the one we are used to. So expect to see some pokemon that would not be found in Kanto or Johto."

Aiden's smile disappeared, and he looked at the ground. He could feel an aching in his chest. He'd tried not to think about it too much, but he knew this trip would bring up unpleasant memories for his friend. "How could I forget it?" He looked back at Nick with a sad, but understanding smile. "You doing okay?"

Lucas hugged Mika close to him and thought about what pokemon he wanted to meet, pretending he wasn't getting the jitters. "It's okay Mika, I'll protect you..." Mika looked at her trainer with a sweet expression, her feelers wiggling happily.

Knight looked up at the sky, noticing dark clouds on the horizon. A storm?

"Yeah I feeling ok. Just don't go to far ok?" With that he grabbed Aiden's hand and squeezed it. "Do you remember the promise we made if we ever were able to get out of Kanto?"

Zack resumed eating. He was also thinking about what pokemon they would likely see on their journey. All he knew at this point was that he would enjoy it more noe that he would be traveling with his best friend.

Aiden squeezed his hand back in reassurance and nodded. "Yeah..." He remembered the pure panic thrumming in his veins. He remembered the cold water surrounding him as he swam as fast as he could. He remembered he was almost too late. He remembered he almost lost his best friend that day... But, a Lapras, unlike any they'd seen before brought them back to the surface, cooing it's calming song to ease the panic. And then as quickly as it came, it was gone.

He snapped out of his thoughts and looked at Nick with an expression of determination. "Some day, we'll find it again. And we'll thank it for what it did for us." He smiled, his features softening, "And that's a promise I intend to keep."

Lucas looked up at the sky. The clouds were thick, blocking out the sun, and the sparkling reflection in the water had dulled. He could feel the static in the air. "Uh oh..."

Nick had just noticed the sky get darker. All this time he had been looking at his best friend. It was his way of calming himself down. "Uh do you think we can find somewhere inside to stay, before it starts to rain? I would rather not be caught in the downpour."

Zack looked to the sky. He saw that it was darker then before. Clouds danced across the sky. They were dark and looked like they would rain down at any moment. He handed his plates to his friend and picked him up and carried inside to try and find a place to sit down and finish his meal. He had a skewer in his mouth as he walked.

Aiden looked up at the sky, sighing. "Yeah good idea." He looked at Knight. "C'mon, buddy, let's--" He froze as a familiar song echoed ever so quietly, almost ethereally. It sounded like... but he couldn't be sure. "Did... did you hear that?" He looked at Nick, unsure if what he heard was actually real or if his mind was playing tricks on him. Knight looked out at the water, thinking he heard it as well.

Lucas smiled, chuckling as he was once again hoisted up by his hero best friend and brought to the safety of inside. He didn't much care for thunder anyway, it made him anxious. Mika followed close behind, having the same feeling about loud noises.

Nick did hear the song. He still had ahold of Aiden's hand. He walked him over to the edge. He looked over the ocean. He wanted to make sure that they would not see their friend again. "Yeah it sound just like them. I remember it well. That song was so soothing and calm. I hope we see them again."

Zack found a small lounge that would not be disturbed except by their brothers. He wanted to have some privacy with his best friend.

Aiden searched the water, noticing the waves become less calm and causing the ferry to bob more frequently. They needed to get inside soon, but...-- His thoughts were interrupted by a crack of lightning and thunder booming a few moments after. He jumped a bit at the sudden sound, gripping Nick's hand a bit tighter. "Okay, yeah, let's get inside and find Lucas and Zack. C'mon Knight." He turned, pulling Nick with him gently. Knight nodded, extending a had to help Gardevoir up first like a true gentlemon.

Lucas jumped at the sound of thunder, leaning closer to Zack instinctively.

Nick followed Aiden he was a little more sacred because of the the loud noise as well as his fear of the ocean. Gardevoir took Knight's hand. She loved that he was acting like a gentleman.

Zack was done eating so he moved over to Lucas ad took his hand. He walked him over to the couch and sat him down and then sat down beside Lucas.

Knight smiled and helped her up, then held the door open for her. The rain was just starting to come down. Aiden looked around at all the tables of people, spotting Lucas and Zack in a more secluded lounge area and heading over to them, waving. "Hey guys. Nice weather we're having, huh?" He joked sarcastically with a goofy grin.

Lucas deadpanned, sighing and shaking his head at the terrible joke.

Nick still had ahold of Aiden's hand pulled him back to look into his eyes. He shook his head slightly hoping that he would get the idea to stop the jokes about the weather. He could feel himself getting a little sea sick as well. He hoped he could make it without blowing chunks everywhere.

Aiden's smile fell. "Oh... Sorry, I was just trying to lighten the mood..." He turned to look at his watch. "We should be there soon, it'll be okay. Let's just try to take it easy for now." He gently pulled him over to the couch across from the other boys and plopped down, getting comfortable and patting the spot next to him for Nick to sit.

Nick took the time to gently sit down by Aiden. Laid down across him. He had his head in Aiden's lap and his feet on the arm rest of the couch. He wanted to be comfy and try to forget that he was on the moving water. He hated being so close to it. He could not wait until they were in Hoenn so they could find somewhere to set up.

Aiden smiled sadly at his friend in his lap and ran his hand through his hair soothingly. He hated seeing Nick like this. He knew the feeling all too well. All the times the roles were reversed when he'd come to Nick, bruised and bleeding and breaking down when they were kids, terrified of what other forms of torture his father had in store for him.

He shook the thoughts from his mind. Now wasn't the time... He looked over at Lucas to ground himself, and he had a thought when he saw him looking back with a knowing expression. He nodded to his guitar, and Lucas smiled in understanding. Aiden wanted to sing the song he always used to sing to Nick when they were kids.

Lucas took his guitar out of the case and sat up, starting to strum the beginning notes...

"
Love is where this begins, thank you for letting me in
I've never had to pretend, you've always known who I am
And I know my life is better, because you're a part of it

I know without you by my side that I would be different
Thank you for all of your trust, thank you for not giving up,
Thank you for holding my hand, I've always known where you stand

As I feel my life is better, so is the world we're living in
I'm thankful for the time I spent
With my best friend.

Thank you for calling me out, thank you for waking me up
Thank you for breaking it down, thank you for choosing us
Thank you for all you're about, thank you for lifting me up
Thank you for keeping me grounded
And being here now

My life is better because you're a part of it
I know without you by my side that I would be different
Yes I feel my life is better, and so is the world we're livin' in
I'm thankful for the time I spent
With my best friend.

You're my best friend...
"

As Aiden sang like a punk rock angel and Lucas played with expert hands, the chitter chatter around them seemed to quiet down as they all looked on at the heartwarming scene, enjoying the free show.

Hearing the words of the song. Nick sat up. He forgot about his problems with the water and the boat he decided to bring out a song that he had writen just for Aiden.

He took out his violin and took off his shoes. He stood up. "Do you guys mind giving me a little space. I want to do a performance and need some room for it."

The crowd gave Nick a large circle to work with. He started on the ground. He was on his knees his legs were folded under himself. He picked up the violin and started to play. As the song got stronger he stood and started to slowly seem to gain confidence as well.

He started to dance. He had years of training in classical dance. He seemed to flow with the music. He had his eyes closed and just settled into his own place of confort. Music had always been a comfort for Nick. It calmed him.

Aiden smiled as he watched Nick take the metaphorical stage. He really was very good at what he did. He thought it would be a good idea for all of them to perform together for some cash when they inevitably found themselves strapped for change. All of their talents put together would make a killing.

When he was done, the crowd applauded the three musicians, whooping and whistling their praises. After a few moments, they all calmed down and made their way back to their seats, just in time for the announcement crackling into the intercom.

"Attention passengers, we are approaching Hoenn and will be docking in Slateport momentarily. Thank you again for joining us on our voyage, and have a wonderful day."

Aiden stretched lazily in his seat with a satisfied grin. His distraction worked perfectly.

Nick sat down and put his shoes back on. He took his violin and started to softly play. He looked directly into Aiden's eyes. He played a soft melody that Aiden knew by heart. Nick hoped that Aiden and Lucas would join in on his song. He wanted to play until the time they had to walk off the ship.
