Open [200XX] - Tales From Neo York - A Cyberpunk RP(G)

RIUHvsO3gT4IpvbizkUeUXzjWNmVE0A0dsm9gnvTjkeeV279AnrjTdbIr3zWun-KUYJym06HheX03filvc3JaZ8qsR9jNe5qs7x2qat6MWElhSup85SXuD362U9I4TgAgnBscPv2

In the year of 200XX, humanity's elite have fled the dying Earth. Some settled on the face of the Moon, while others set off to explore beyond the outer rim of the solar system. What once was our Earth is now a galactic slum of mile-high structures gleaming with neon, ruled by corporate greed and infested with gangs of mutants and cyborgs, while the Moon has been developed into a city of carnal pleasure, glamour, and excess. The march of technology has been unstoppable; the dead can return in robotic Shells, genetic modification has vastly improved the lives of some- but disadvantaged the lives of many.

On Earth’s surface, most people are employed by the megacorporations that provide all products, services and even law, using Earth’s population as an endless source of cheap laborers. There are those, however, who slip through the cracks of the iron-fist rule of the wealthy and make a living through much more adventurous and much less legal means.

They are the smugglers, the hackers, the assassins and the freedom fighters;
They are the ones who stand between humanity and its subjugators.

They are the ones whose story we will tell.

Welcome... To the year:

This roleplay is based on the Tabletop RPG “200XX”, a homebrew cyberpunk-themed text campaign devised by Plutoniarch, who has also supplied me with the amazing pixel art you're seeing. I have been part of an ongoing campaign GM’d by Plutoniarch and have been enjoying myself so immensely in this engaging cyberpunk story, that I gained his permission to bring the story to a roleplaying format.

Although we will not be using the rule system that the campaign is based around, I would like to repeat its core tenement: MASH, or Make Awesome Shit Happen. Nothing is impossible 18,000 years in the future- so let the Rule Of Cool be your guide!

As stated, in this RP our character will be members of society’s fringe, criminals in the eyes of society- but heroes, perhaps, in the eyes of the downtrodden. Creating your character will require you to choose a Race, some of which I will describe in detail below, though you can run your own idea for one by me. You have a great measure of freedom to play with the character creation beyond that!

~~~
[RACES]
  • “LOONIE” (Moondweller Human)
    The moondwellers are egregiously wealthy and it shows; Most are spoiled sick and regard Earth as nothing more than their personal factory and a zoo of undesirable humanoids. Generations of high-grade genetic modification have made them elegant and desirable, enhancing their inherent social sway. Not all Loonies stay evil; A growing movement exists of activists who have realized the abuse and injustice their companies put Earthlings through, and seek to bring change, through whatever means necessary. Death is not the end of a Loonie’s life, as they are equipped with the IBASU In-Body Analog Storage Unit that will store their neural activity at the time of death, ready to be transferred to a clone of the user’s body.
  • “SPACER” (Human Space Colonist)
    Spacers left the solar system in their communal ships, filled to the brim with ambition. Now, their distant offspring is scrambling meekly back to Earth. Colonies established on distant worlds are mostly small, starving and lawless; Earth might not be paradise, but it’s a place to make a living. The unique conditions of lives spent mostly on starships have left the Spacers physically weaker, but nimbler.
  • “NOBODY” (Revived Android)
    The death of an Earth citizen too poor to afford proper cloning tech usually results in the creation of a Nobody, a robot shell with a serial number etched into it for the recently deceased to inhabit. Nobodies lack legal rights, which often leads to their suffering at the hands of the corporate machine; however, their lack of a legal identity makes police and corporate identification nearly impossible, so some gravitate to a life of vigilante work or crime.
  • “MUTE” (Mutated Hybrid Humanoid)
    Rampant genetic experimentation by the Loonies led to the birth of the first Mutates, or Mutes in shorthand; Human-animal hybrids who quickly became the servant class of the lunar palaces, treated inhumanely and as disposable assets. Those who found their way to Earth discovered that their unique features made them perfectly suited for certain kinds of jobs. The clawed became fighters, the quick became infiltrators. Today, Mutes are an unremarkable sight, and inbreeding has led to Mutes who can easily pose as humans. They boast improved strength, speed and athletics in comparison to most, but age quicker and rarely live past sixty.
  • “GAMMA” (Earthdweller Mutant)
    "Gamma" is the informal term given to sufferers of Unstable Genetic Nonconformity Syndrome. The syndrome causes spontaneous mutations in development, causing mental confusion and a variety of abnormalities such as extra limbs or bodily regeneration. Although there are drugs designed to aid Gammas in focusing, their availability is kept down by the corporate governments, and most Gammas find themselves unable to think straight, choosing instead to serve as the muscle for their groups.
  • “TECHIE” (Earthdweller Cyborg)
    A certain strain of the Unstable Genetic Nonconformity Syndrome created a subset of humans whose bodies suffered from the syndrome so badly they need cybernetic and mechanical augmentations their whole lives to function; Their brains, however, aren’t clouded like the Gammas’ and are uniquely suited to skills relating to robotics and coding. Techies are made dependent on corporations for the maintenance of their vital augmentations, leading to a cultural undercurrent of rage against corporations that drives many of them to an underground lifestyle.
If you’ve chosen your character’s race, it’s time to think about their background and their motivation. Are they a Loonie who has turned their back on society, smuggling dangerous goods armed only with relentless charm and a plasmatic pistol? Are they a Mute thief, relieving the rich of their valuables? A Spacer mercenary who snipes from the rooftops and before slinking into the shadows? As long as they end up in Neo York at the start of this RP, and are amenable to a “team assigment” with fellow low-lifes, be as imaginative and inventive as you like!
Here is a bio template for your convenience- A filled-out one for the character I will be using, and a ready-to-use version.
Name: Darling
Age: 24
Gender: Female
Species: Mutate
Look: Pale and freckled, Darling wears layers of red waist-length robes with a shawl and hood. Her eyes are covered with a digital mask that lights up with words or symbols. She wears black shorts and leggings below her robes. She has horns on the top of her head that hook back, and are easily hidden under her hood.
Weapons: A two-handed phase katana, emanating an icey blue glow.
Personality: Darling is naturally curious, easily distracted and seems to live inside her own mind most of the time. She’s also impulsive, hard to reason with and a complete stranger to concepts like ‘lying’ or ‘acting’. She never verbalizes, and only occasionally reacts with a single word or symbol on her display mask. In stark contrast to this innocuous nature, she fights with bloodlust and savagery in combat, darting around tirelessly until all her enemies lie cut up on the floor.
History: No one knows about the origins of Darling. She appeared on the radar in the Neo York region first some three years ago, and never stays in one place long enough to get acquainted.
Skills: Her skill with a blade makes her a popular dependant for bounty hunting and extermination, though she refuses to cut down the innocent. Even for a Mute, she moves with unusual speed and grace. Her expertise, however, begins and ends with her physical capabilities; She’s completely clueless when it comes to social interaction, technology and other basic life skills.
It’s worth noting that the most exciting aspect of the world of 200XX, to me, is the fact that it isn’t a locked-in setting beyond the lore I’ve described so far. The goal of the setting is to incorporate whatever we enjoy most about cyberpunk fiction, which means that YOU get to pick and choose what you need to assimilate the character you would most enjoy playing!
I will only moderate entries if I feel like the character would be too OP during the roleplaying. Remember that Flaws are as important to making an interesting character as Talents are; The joy of roleplaying is figuring out how your character overcomes their struggles.
Those of you who are interested can ask me any questions you want to ask in this thread, and if your character is finished, you can post their biography here too!
I wish you lots of fun from the year…
Mr.RMA
Magearna before it was cool
Quite the interesting concept, I'd love to give this a go and see how it all transpires.
Name:
Grady Giles VI
Age:
23
Gender:
Male
Species:
Loonie
Look:
Tall, fair-skinned, and green-eyed with white hair, just as his father wanted him, and just how his father’s father wanted him, and ultimately the way every Giles has looked for the past six generations. On Earth, he attempts to cover this up by wearing polarized goggles and a hat of some kind to hide away some of his more notable features, in order to avoid the risk of anyone catching on to his heritage. Primarily, his clothing consists of his work uniform, a light blue cotton shirt under a blue jacket with grey polyester slacks, along with a blue cap and black work boots. On his wrist is his family’s latest incarnation of their trademark product, the WristGuard m7. This device can map out his location, detect any living beings within the vicinity, and communicate with those in possession of his contact info or vice versa.
Weapons:
The WristGuard can either shoot a laser or manifest a shield as a means of both offense and defense if the need arises. The laser’s frequency can be adjusted to either daze and/or stun a target, or, at its highest frequency, potentially vaporize an individual at a close enough range. He also possesses a handgun as a backup.
Personality:
Extensively naïve via his upbringing, Grady’s privileged life on the moon left him almost entirely shielded by any of the hardships that the people of Earth were undergoing. On Earth, he’s most definitely out of his element, and relies almost entirely on the technology he possesses to make it through each day intact. Essentially exiled from the moon, he has no allegiance to anyone left on his old home, directing all his loyalty to his current employer. Much like his father and forefathers, he will do whatever it takes and step on anyone he needs to in order to fulfill his intentions, but unlike the rest of his family, he doesn’t intend to become some kind of corporate conqueror, his motives are entirely based on his basic survival. After all, with his recent exile, it’s highly unlikely that he’ll be restored from his IBASU upon his eventual demise. If someone doesn’t get in the way of his continued existence however, then they may find a far more likable and charismatic sort in him.
History:
The first Grady Giles established a small corporate empire many years ago with his invention of the WristGuard, a device intended to play to the insecurities of Earthling consumers in dangerous environments… and of course rid them of all their spare currency. This rapidly developing business was one that each descending Giles maintained and improved over the generations, to the point where their very appearance became a trademark to the company itself, as each child of the family was genetically modified to look exactly like the founder and patriarch. The similarities are so uncanny in nature that some question if perhaps the Giles family is secretly a line of clones merely posing as a traditional family line. The company grew exponentially by the time Giles V took control, but suddenly, mysteriously, something caused their stocks to plummet, and their assets all but vanished. The family itself maintained enough funds to survive well into future investments, but the youngest member of the family was now suddenly seen as a liability. Paranoid that Giles VI’s dependency would ruin the rest of the family financially, Giles V forced his son out to make a living on his own, but due to his family’s corporate collapse, no one on the moon would even bother to look in the disgraced boy’s direction. Desperate for funds, Grady had little choice but to seek employment elsewhere, and seeing how Earth was the nearest possible ‘elsewhere’ available, that was where he went. Miraculously, Grady not only survived his first few days on the planet, but managed to get ahold of a job as a letter carrier. For who, he didn’t really know, they kept themselves classified, but for some reason he seemed to be delivering letters and parcels exclusively to very… secretive individuals. He had no idea he had just become the latest messenger-boy for a syndicate of rebels looking to bring down the very system he was once destined to be a part of.
Skills:
Surprisingly adaptive and resourceful despite his cushy upbringing, Grady’s intent to survive has proven an intangible asset that has carried him through each day on Earth. It helps, of course, that he’s the product of expensive genetic modification that has left him with an athletic build. His aim with both a laser and ballistic weapon is particularly keen, and his reflexes are above-average. He’s also rather knowledgeable on the workings of the latest technology, at least, from a consumer’s standpoint. However, all that said, he is cripplingly dependent on said technology to guide him, and if he were to ever be devoid of it, he’d likely end up in a state of catatonia… at best.
Resident Furry
sci_fi_greg_by_weazel75-dbnrvhv.png
Name: Serial No. 0501211920-1001142101-1825291829, "Gregory Faust"
Age: N/A, self identifies as "late twenties."
Gender: N/A, prefers masculine pronouns.
Species: NOBODY
Look: Gregory's robotic shell has been heavily modified to the point it no longer resembles a typical human being. In particular, the head has been heavily modified, and with the addition of a long, broad tail that tapers to a point, he resembles an anthropomorphized river otter. The tail serves a practical purpose as well an an aesthetic one, providing a counterbalance for his digitigrade feet. The modified foot gives him a certain lightness to his step, at least compared to the typical nobody, allowing him to move quieter relative to his peers. The shell's stark, black and white finish is broken up only by his golden eyes and power core, and his painted gray 'nose.'
Over top of his shell, Greg has taken to wearing a synthetic skin made up of fake fur in tones of brown and cream. This skin hides all but his eyes and nose, and though it is not meant to be taken on and off, it can be removed and replaced should it be damaged beyond repair. Though his robotic body lacks any sort of private parts that need to be covered, Greg has taken to wearing a pair of blue board shorts as casual wear, as they 'feel right' and avoid making people uncomfortable as they might be looking at him in just his fur.
Greg's business attire is made up of a sharp two piece suit consisting of black dress pants and a black vest, over a white button up dress shirt and red tie. The shirt's sleeves are usually rolled up to his elbows, and the entire look is complimented with a pair of black fingerless gloves and pair of black spats, which are worn without shoes.
Weapons: Greg uses various guns depending on what his current job demands. He always, however, carries a pair of pistols on him. Usually he prefers a Neo York Reload, but he occasionally dual wields them for flair.
Personality: Greg is best described as 'robotic.' He has long given up on emotions such as compassion, kindness, and sympathy as obstacles to his work. At the same time, he considers himself a 'businessman with standards,' above such base emotions as anger, hatred, or jealousy. Though he is capable of putting up a sadistic front when he needs to break someone, he considers his job to be just that, a job. He is, quite simply, incapable of responding in kind to most any show of emotion. His chosen physical form, however, does suggest some kind of eccentricity.
History: Greg's history is unknown. Even his name, Gregory Faust, is a later invention, his first few jobs were done under his serial number. Greg, known simply as "Faust" professionally, keeps to the underground, out of sight and out of mind, until his services are requested.
Skills: Greg is a Fixer, he fixes problems, for the right price. His skills range from cleaning up or fabricating crime scenes, disposing of evidence or corpses, providing escape routes and get away vehicles, working over hostages, all the way up to contract killing. Any morally dubious and highly illegal act you need done, he's your Nobody. His synthetic body allows him to operate without leaving behind any DNA evidence, and his status as a legal non-entity also benefits him greatly in his chosen field of work.
Hey this sounds super cool, but could you give me a bit more detail on Unstable Genetic Nonconformity Syndrome? I kinda get what it's supposed to be from the name, but are there any more specifics to it than that?
Name: Warren Viktor
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Species: TECHIE
Look: Warren has dark tan skin, showing Hispanic heritage. His hair is dark brown, and is reaches almost to his shoulders. His right eye is hazel, while his left eye, is hazel with bits of blue in the pupil. His body has undergo quite a few augmentations, due to Unstable Nonconformity Syndrome. His left eye is now robotic, along what a piece of steel plating that stretches from the back of the neck to about halfway past the ear, with an inch in width and a milimeter of thickness above the base of the head. This leads to internal metal pins to help support his deformed spine, allowing him to be more athletic that he should have been at birth. All four of his limbs are robotic, with a thin layering of skin like material colored the color of his natural skin. The skin can rip if enough pressure is put onto it, but the skin is self repairing, taking but a few minutes to fully heal, on average. His chest is muscular, while his limbs give him increased strength and even look muscular. There are pistons in his knees and elbows, that he put it himself to increase punching power and jumping ability. His finger tips, are a light grey mechanical color, mainly in place of his finger tips. As for clothing, he tries to wear clothes to disguise himself, and make himself not look like he was given any augmentations. He wears black sunglasses, and a dark grey beanie to cover his eyes and head. He wears a dark grey hoodie, and baggy black jeans. As for foot wear, he sticks to dark grey socks and black combat boots. Strapped to his waist is a black belt, with multiple pockets, kinda like a utility belt. Strapped to his left thigh, is a plasma revolver in a brown leather holster and strapped to his right thigh is a black bladed hunter’s knife in a sheath of its own. On his hands are black fingerless gloves, and he wears a large black pack pack, made for carrying heavy loads. However, when he wants to look a bit more casual and less suspicious, he wears a tight black t-shirt, with tight navy blue jeans, the same gloves, and black converse sneakers. The sneakers are tricked out with an anti-gravity booster, allowing him to hover slightly, for short periods of time. They also allow him to move quicker and help him jump and run off quite well. He prefers to keep his hat on at all times. On his wrist at all imes is a battery wristwatch. And old school one, wth ticking hands, the whole lot.
Weapons: Warren prefers to fight up close and personal, thinking that shooting from a distance is somewhat weak and dishonorable. His main weapon is a set of plasma brass knuckles made from titanium. He also keeps a Plasma PIstol for any short range fights, and a knife in case h needs to cut something or someone.
Personality: Warren is cocky in his own right. However he feels he has worked for what he has, so he should be able to enjoy it for a bit. He is known to act superior and has a bit of a god-complex. While he is self-suffient, he isn’t that much of a team player. Warren is stubborn and can come off as an asshole at times. He holds a hatred for Loonies, tha began with his father ditching him. He is a man who is willing to kill when needed. However with so much cockiness, failure and betrayal can hit him hard. This is part of the reason he tries to keep few relationships with people. He knows hardship and experienced it as a young child. This gives him a soft spot of children of earth, but overall does his best to hide it.
History: Warren’s mother and father where both Loonies when Warren was born. However he was proven to have the Unstable Noncomformity Syndrome, and a good amount of his physical body was replaced with mechanical parts. Feeling disgraced with his own son, his father, who had decent influence, sent his son to Earth when the boy was nearing ten years of age. Feeling angry, and a strong hatred for Loonies. He began to steal, often failing miserably and getting into deep trouble. After three years of beatings from those who caught them, gangs, and nearly starving to death, hundreds of times over, Warren felt lost. During this time, he had migrated to Neo York City and spent his days living in the slums. Feeling utterly helpless, at the age of 13, he attempted to kill himself. He tried hanging himself with a wire and a rafter in a long abandoned church. However the wood was rotting, and the rafter snapped, ceasing his attempt. Feeling even more hopeless, he decided it would be better to go on a susicde mission, and try to survive somehow, but felt i his heart he outdid be killed. He planned to rob a local gang who were stationed in Neo York City, called the Cyber Vipers. They were in the middle of a turf war with some unknown gang that people were dubbing the Night Raiders, and if they caught him, they would kill him for sure. So he plannned it all out. He wanted to die after making it to the heart of their supplies. So he had something that survived longer than he did, if it was only for a short while . He spent roughly two months planing his heist. During the time he began, the Night Raiders planned their own attack on the opposite sector of the base as Warren was entering from. Warren snuck through the compound easily, as most of the Cyber Vipers attention was towards the attack from the Night Raiders. He was caught by not he Cyber Vipers, but by the Night Raiders. Their leader was impressed and gave him the option to join the gang. Warren was quick to accept. During his time as apart of the gang, he had a mentor by the name of Drake Franklin. He was a TECHIE much like Warren but was in a more severe state. Drake taught Warren al he knew about technology, including how to hack, code, and build with machines. Using what he was taught, Warren upgraded some of his own augmentations to better suit his style. He as trained to be a thief for the NIght Raiders, and became quite well at it. However at the age of 27 he decided to go solo and began doing odd jobs to earn his keep, along with stealing of course.
Skills: Due to his robotic augmentations, he has increased speed, flexibility, strength and reaction time. He can move quickly, making his way through dense areas quickly with a bit o parkour. He is strong and has good endurance from an intense training regime that was apart of being apart of the Night Raiders. That and his augmentations. However he is still trying to improve anyways. He is a excellent thief, often reliving on his abilities and deception to outwit his enemies. He is a good mechanic and can code and hack most types of computers.
Hey this sounds super cool, but could you give me a bit more detail on Unstable Genetic Nonconformity Syndrome? I kinda get what it's supposed to be from the name, but are there any more specifics to it than that?
It’s kinda all there in the first post- not much more to it than what you see in the Gammas and the Techies :) Other mutations would probably fall under the Mutes, unless you can think of another cool way to show the effects of UGNS on a person.
Hey, I would be interested in joining as a Mute, but what mutations would you say are allowed. Is it a kinda Bioshock mutation, or a natural mutation?
Hey, I would be interested in joining as a Mute, but what mutations would you say are allowed. Is it a kinda Bioshock mutation, or a natural mutation?
It’s a mutation that results in animalistic properties, enhanced physical prowess and faster aging. It’s not exactly natural since it was engineered into the population.
I was meaning biological or like outside created. But what you said makes is seem more biological. Are there any limits to them?
I mean, you want to avoid having a character that's too overpowered. Honestly, if you want your character to have some quirky mutations, the races I've mentioned are not your only choices. Design to your heart's content!
Name: Halt Draden
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Species: Death Crawler (MUTE)
Look: His skin reflects light, allowing him to blend in with his surroundings. His head looks boney, and snake like. His body is thin, but all he is is muscle. He is extremely fast.
Weapons: He has claws that are almost impossible to break. (his kind is hunted for them) He also has an energy shot allowing him to snipe people from the shadows.
Personality: He is extremely harsh, and only gives people one chance. Halt is the guy who would kill someone just because he annoyed someone.
History: Halt was a normal person, who was sent to a distant planet on a trip. He was captured by the people, and was forced into a strange chamber where he was forced to breath in almost solid radiation from their planet. He was one of the few who lived the process, and was forced into the shadows when they found that he was extremely deadly, and was able to kill almost anyone.
Skills: Braxe Claws, Sharpshooting, Camouflage, Extreme strength.
Non-Skill: His body is extremely fragile, and could be taken down with a few hits.
