That's a very good question.

I think this is one of those cases where we'd say "RPs are not the games" and take some artistic liberties - it could be that Haunter needs a period of solitude to evolve into Gengar, or Scyther needs a Metal Coat and some sort of fusion procedure to evolve into Scizor.

Which Pokémon are you thinking of evolving? IF you have anything specific in mind, I'm sure myself or @StellarWind Elsydeon could help you think up a good way to make the evolution work in RP and still make sense. :)

Usually in cases like this I tend to refer to the anime or other forms of canon - and as those are inconsistent, I'd suggest following the logic of the item rather than the game mechanic.

So for instance, the Reaper Cloth is supposed to be a piece of cloth filled with spiritual energy. You could have the a Dusclops exposed to this cloak over a period of time, draw its energies in and eventually evolve through that.

If you do want to have a nod to the games there, in-game trade evos are explained as being triggered by exposure to some form of electromagnetic waves of a certain frequency as the 'mons are traded using trade machines/the Great Ominous Wi-Fi Connection in the sky.

Hm. If I were to fudge an Alakazam evolution, it COULD have been attained through an intense meditation and some kind of an internal spirit quest that eventually allowed the Kadabra to unlock its hidden power and become the Alakazam it could be. xD
