Well, the obvious choice is Froakie, but I understand if you would rather prefer Chespin or Fenniken.

Froakie and Chespin, are pretty much the two, I've narrowed it down to. I love Greninja's speed, but with Chesnaught's bulk and Fighting typing, it's a really tough choice.

Well the best one to choose is Froakie. It's scientifically proven that Froakie is the best starter to choose in Pokemon X and Y. But having a good fighting type wouldn't be bad. There's Hawlucha, but nah.

True, but my playing style is a bit "skewed" if you will. I often rely on my starter to be bulky. And as for fighting types, I know I can get Lucario.

That's true. And It's fine if you choose Chespin, I'm just saying that in a gameplay sort of sense that choosing Froakie would be better. All I need to tell you is, and no matter what, have a Tyrantrum on your team! No reason, other than it's cool.

Y is so easy, it doesn't even matter about proper team composition. As long as your not running all fire types your fine. Or disable Exp. Share, and intentionally don't grind. Then the game gets a little tricky.

I didn't even grind...

Froakie and Fletchling can be useful on their own. They'll destroy the game for you, except for the 5th and 6th gyms, and 1 or 2 E4 Members. For the 6th, grab a Honedge or Zubat, and for the 5th, any Ground or Rock Type works.

I was going to go with a Greninja, Charizard, Aegislash, and Lucario (maybe).

If I get too stuck, I'll just Nuzlocke it, because Wynaut.
