They acted like he was completely helpless, and had their character burst into tears at the sight of him. They even had the nerve to ask what happened to him, to pit him in a wheelchair...

I feel like that's more "What the fuck do I do?" situation I wouldn't know how to react to someone in a wheelchair I'd probably stare it's likely that person had good intentions but executed them poorly or maybe it's part of their character

Good intentions or not, you don't ever ask someone why they need a wheelchair. It's a very personal question, and unless you know them personally, then it's none of your business.
