It's near impossible to sympathise with Rose/Pink now, knowing that she betrayed her family, and her home planet just because she couldn't face the consequences of having the colony she begged the other diamonds for.

Rose Quartz = Pink Diamond.

Essentially...Steven's mom was Rose Quartz, who was from an extraterrestial species known as gems. Gems are ruled over by monarches known as Diamonds. The Diamonds run a very strict society, and basically hollow out planets in the idea of creating more gems efficiently.

They were going to do this to Earth- however, Rose Quartz supposedly found the life there (See: Humanity) just as worthy as the gems. This caused Rose Quartz led a campaign against the reigning Diamond of Earth, Pink Diamond.

This is where things get messy. Rose apparently killed Pink Diamond- In reality Pink was acting as Rose to feign her death to escape the responsiblities of hollowing Earth.

The Diamonds responded by hitting almost all gems on the planets with a "light", this light was intended to eradicate the local gems but actually destroyed their minds and "corrupted" them into little more than violent animals

And then, thousands of years later, she gave birth to Steven, essentially killing herself in the process, and leaving the last surviving Crystal Gems to clean up the mess she made.

Thus Rose/Pink led to a near collapse of Earth Gems. The problem is is that this activity makes Rose/Pink seem really selfish.

Which contradicts her earlier, more heroic approach. I'm not sure if she was meant to still be seen as a "good guy" by the writers, but I certainly don't see her that way.
