Superman: Eternal: S1: Superman: Eternal: Season 1, Episode 3 - Incursion (Part 1)

by Generation Sect

Generation Sect Clark Kent's life has been relatively calm so far, but now, destiny has come knocking.
Clark Kent sat, as he usually did in the morning, on the train to the city centre of Metropolis, taking his usual daily journey to his new workplace, the Daily Planet. He looked up and around the vehicle, frustrated by his lack of a newspaper. Had to do something on this journey… as his eyes darted around, that’s when he noticed a fellow co-worker sat in the seat directly opposite to him. Lois Lane, was it? After Jimmy had introduced him to her, he had managed to recall seeing some of her articles before… From what basically everyone had told him, she seemed like a big deal. It was then that he realised he had been staring at her for way too long, the reporter raising her eyes up and meeting his gaze with her usual sharpness. Clark figured he had to be polite and strike up conversation or something… no way this could get more awkward, right?
“Umm… so, what did you think about the-” Clark tried to start something, only to be instantly interrupted by her with something completely unrelated.
“Hear they found some sort of alien craft out in Smallville.”
“Who do you mean by they?” Clark raised an eyebrow.
“Star Labs. Only small, nothing in it, and old too, but they’re making a huge deal out of it.” Despite her seeming disregard for most things, she certainly payed attention to the news, and seemed pretty passionate about it too. No wonder she was such a good reporter.
“Huh…” Clark fell into silence at that thought. Had they found the pod? That’s what they had always called it… him and Kenny had found the silver, metallic structure in the Braverman’s abandoned farmhouse shed, where they had often played as children, and had hidden it, never letting it leave barn. It had been a frequent staple in their games, and he knew from what his Ma and Pa told him that it was very important to him. If it had been found and analysed by actual scientists… this could be very good, or very very bad.

The scientists entered the containment chamber with their hazmat suits, several of them picking up and hauling out the Silver Kryptonian Birthing Pod. They had struggled to gather any sort of information from it… maybe the next relic would prove more fruitful. Professor Silas Stone looked out into the containment chamber through a secure window from above, speaking into a microphone.
“Bring in the second relic we found with it.” A team of suited up scientists returned, lugging in a metallic device, sort of like an abstract futuristic film reel projector, and placing it down on a pillar in the middle of the containment chamber. He spoke again into the microphone, pressing a button on the motherboard to begin recording. “Begin test.” One scientist pressed a sequence of buttons into the side of the projector, the team quickly leaving the room and sealing the heavily reinforced doors shut behind them.
Professor Stone leaned over, staring out the window and below to the containment chamber, where the projector-like extra-terrestrial device shuddered and shone, before projecting an astral portal, creating a void the colour of space, speckling with sparks like stars, it was as if the scientists were witnessing the entrance to another world entirely.
“Should we stop it Professor Stone?”
“No, I want to see this…”
As the man stared, the portal rippled, before out of it came a metallic, silver foot, clanging to the ground. Then, another advanced forward, the full body of the being coming into view. The scientist’s eyes widened at the armoured being, its face, strangely enough, human like, with a piercing blue, cold gaze, and short black hair.
“Finally… free of that accursed prison.” The being’s voice boomed out, staring around the room. “So this is Earth… what a pitifully unadvanced planet. Bland… unassuming. Now I see why Jor-El would hide something here…” His glare settled on Professor Stone through the glass, the towering invader looking up and blasting out his words proudly.
“You pitiful animals are about to have your eyes opened by Krypton’s light… All who resist shall be crushed by my might. Your entire planet shall kneel, starting from here…
Kneel… BEFORE ZOD.”
With that, to the shock and awe of all the on looking scientists, he advanced forward to the heavily reinforced metal door, raising and pulling back his armoured arm, and with one blow of his fist, a whole was torn straight through the middle of the door, the force and impact of the strike sending the entire thing down the corridor, ripped from its hinges. And he advanced onwards, as the still remaining portal pulsed more, multitudes of metallic tentacles and claws slowly emerging…

The train pulled up to its stop, Clark getting off after Lois only to see people milling all about the train station. But this was far from the usual early morning bustle. There were screams, shouts, yells. It was complete chaos as security had to start manning the doors to prevent overcrowding as people ran in and out.

“What in the hell?” Clark shouted, spinning around as people milled around the platform struggling to figure out what was even going on or what was causing all this. Lois simply glanced down to her phone, attentively reading from it despite the chaos around them, and then looking to Clark, speaking in a calm voice but her expression certainly indicating shock and disbelief.
“Giant robot drones, Clark. Flying, robot drones. Attacking Metropolis and working their way to the City Centre. … Scientists and major news outlets think that its aliens.”
Clark simply blinked and took it in, his face blank. Aliens? Hadn’t she just talked about them finding something that might’ve been his pod…? Did this have something to do with him? But there was no time to be excited about humanity’s potential first contact with extraterrestrial beings. No, this seemed much more in ‘Alien invasion movie’ territory. These ‘drones’ were attacking people, destroying the city, and very much heading towards some goal in the centre. He hadn’t seen how big they were, but Lois had called them giant… if this had anything to do with him, and people were getting hurt, he would never be able to forgive himself if he just stood by… What would Ma and Pa say? He had to… no, he didn’t know how big they were or what weapons they had, could he really take them? At the end of the day, there was only one way to find out… Without response, Clark quickly turned around, bolting through the panicking people that filled the station, past security and out through the door and into the streets of Metropolis, looking up and down to see cars filling the road, horns blaring down the road, one car to the left that had had its roof crushed in by some sort of impact, thankfully empty. He took off down the road, finding a nearby phone box, quickly pulling the door open, hopping inside, and closing the door. As fast as he could, he undid the buttons on his shirt, pulling it open to reveal the light blue cloth underneath, the yellow and red S-shaped symbol emerging. Luckily, he had the idea to bring this with him….

Professor Silas Stone frantically ran around the ruined containment chamber, sorting through rubble in a desperate attempt to find anything. After pulling at another rock, he saw a glint of silver, the S symbol on the alien artifact. He fell back, letting out a sigh of relief. Suddenly, he heard the sound of heavy footsteps, quickly hopping up off the ground and staring towards the busted open entrance to the containment chamber, yelling out.
“Back again? No need to prolong the destruction. You already destroyed my career, just FINISH THE JOB ALREADY-” He suddenly stopped, adjusting his glasses on his face as he saw a very different figure. But one thing that WAS familiar to the professor was the S symbol on his chest. “Who the hell are you?”
“Well, that’s certainly no way to greet someone.” Clark smirked as he entered the containment chamber, his red cape dragging along behind him. The doctor sighed as Clark approached him, taking his glasses off and rubbing dust from the lenses with his knuckle.
“Fine, shouldn’t have expected one of you ‘costumed superhero’ types to talk, so I guess I will. Professor Silas Stone, head of research here at Star Labs’ Metropolis branch.” He put his glasses back on, looking to the symbol on the man’s chest. “You got something to do with that relic we found? Good. Maybe you CAN help.” Clark tried his best to keep an unreactive face, but his mind was racing. So they really had found the pod… but what had caused this then? The professor moved over to the pedestal in the middle, picking up the Projector, and heading back over to Clark. “We found this down in Smallville at the same time as that other relic, but this one seemed to be new. It crashing was what alerted us to their location. Local authorities thought it was a small meteor at first.”
“What happened, and what’s this got to do with the robots attacking the city?” Clark kept his composure, wondering whether Ma and Pa were okay.
“Well, after getting nothing out of tests with the first relic, we tested this one. And we must have turned it on, because it opened some sort of portal, maybe to space, maybe to some dimension or something. Was hard to get a good look, because this huge man in silver armour came out. Definitely not human technology. Next we knew, he was spouting off rhetoric and busting his way out of here. Completely destroyed the place in the process. Any attempts to stop him failed spectacularly, he was just too strong. And once he left, that’s when they started coming out of the portal too… floating, black robots, with metal tentacles and some sort of laser weapon. They just kept coming, but eventually they stopped and I managed to get down here and close the portal thank the lord.” The professor paced up and down the rubble as he recalled the experiences of the past half hour.
“… Do you think we can put them back in?” Clark stood there, a gravely serious expression on his face, scratching his chin as he pondered.
“Good luck trying to pull that off… but there seems to be some reverse sequence. When we pressed the buttons they lit up in an order, but we had to push the lever on it forward first. It can be pulled back, so maybe there’s a ‘suck in’ mode as well as a ‘push out’.” As he explained the professor gestured to the two buttons on the side of the projector, and the purple stick along the other side. Seemed simple enough to operate, but then again this was most likely alien technology, so relying on a hunch to save the city wasn’t the most encouraging path to take. However, it didn’t seem like they’d have the time to test it, as a large explosion could be heard even from the lab. Clark snapped his head around in the direction of the chaos with superhuman speed.
“The city centre! They got there!” He quickly snatched the Projector from the Professor’s hands, dashing out of the containment chamber with it in his hand, his body and cape forming a blue and red blur as he moved faster than Professor Stone’s eyes.
“… well, guess I should pack my bags.” He sighed, slowly leaving off to his office. At least the ‘Superhero’ types were here to solve it now hopefully, but he didn’t expect to keep his job after this.

The man cowered behind his car, his rear seated firmly on the torn up ground, clenching his teeth and sweating as he stayed as low as he could, hoping to avoid its view… The black, oval-shaped metallic form floated along above the middle of the road, its two metallic tentacles that came from its underside reaching out and searching along the floor, a glowing red orb on the front of it, an eye that doubled as a laser. Just as it was about to make its way past the car, a stray piece of rubble fell from the sky, the rock smashing into the bonnet of the car, crushing it in and setting off the car’s blaring alarms. The Drone’s attention turned back to the car, tilting around to face it, a low humming sound as the eye glowed a deeper red, preparing to fire, as the man cursed, not moving, ready to accept his fate. And, at that moment, there was a colossal heave and a heavy crashing sound, as Clark leaped forward from down the street like a speeding bullet, swinging his fist forward, and smashing into the side of the Drone, denting the metal inwards and sending it tumbling and rolling down the road, skidding to a stop as it tore a trench into the ground. He had to hold himself back from pumping his fist in excitement. He really could do some damage to these things! But he still didn’t know how many there were… As he thought, the Drone floated back up from the ground, rotating around mid-air and self-righting itself, extending back out the one appendage it had remaining as it began to charge up its laser again. As the light became brighter and the humming louder, Clark figured out what was going on. He wasn’t sure if he could take a shot from one of these, and he didn’t want to find out. In the blink of an eye, he dashed forward, sliding across the ground and reaching out with one hand, snatching up the metallic tentacle from the ground, and hopping to his feet just below the Drone, rising up and swinging the tentacle from over his shoulder with both hands. Just as the humming reached its climax, the drone took the full impact of the attack, a ripping sound as the robot was batted away, flying off the road and directly into the wall of the building at the side of the road, crashing into the glass window of the storefront and getting stuck halfway through, the bent up last tentacle twitching around as the humming came to a stop and the light in the Drone’s eye died. Clark gritted his teeth, squatting down as he prepared to make the next jump down to the city centre. These things were gonna get in the way, but maybe if he could find that man the Professor had talked about back at Star Labs… if he had some connection to the Projector, did he have one to the Pod too? Was he… like him? If he was an alien… was Clark an alien too? He shook his head disdainfully. He had no time to question himself. He had to save people, first and foremost. With that thought in mind, he took off into the air with another one of his super-jumps, leaving a crater in the road as he took off down the street.

The armoured man looked out around the abandoned and destroyed circular plaza of Metropolis City Centre. His piercing blue eyes took in the destruction he had sown.
“Yes… this is what we SHOULD HAVE been doing all these years. Even if with me alone as its leader, Krypton’s empire will extend beyond the very reach of the stars themselves! As it always should have!” He raised his silver and black gauntlet into the air, clenching his fist. Clark slowly moved behind the remains of what had presumably once been a wall, now a barrier of crumbling stone standing at the side of the plaza. He stood up straight, back to the wall, tilting his head to the side in an attempt to look around it without being spotted. He had finally managed to beat his way to the centre, crushing most of the Drones in his path, and luckily for him the mysterious being was alone. Krypton? Clark didn’t know what he was talking about, but he knew for sure it didn’t sound good. He was going to have to make his move now, while the armoured man’s back was to him. Hopefully he could dash fast enough across the plaza to catch him off guard. Clark moved his foot, taking one step to begin his dash, only for the man to suddenly turn on him, his eyes glowing a dark red colour, and with reflexes even faster than Clark’s own firing a laser from each eye, blasting a hole through the wall and hitting Clark in the back, causing him to fall forward onto his knees, clasping his arms around his side and to his back in pain, as a patch in the back of his suit was charred read by the heated energy. Clark screamed out at the intense, burning pain he felt.
“AAAAAAAARGH!”
As he kneeled on the floor, he turned around, about to pick himself up, only for the force of a powerful kick to slam a hole in the wall, the bricks blasting out and landing scattered around him, dust settling on his costume. In front of him, stepping through the hole in the wall that collapsed behind him stood the armoured man, who began to… float. Ascending into the air above Clark like a godly being, as he looked down at him with his chilling blue gaze, filled with judgement. He spoke out in that booming voice he had, stern and controlling.
“KAL-EL. LAST SON OF KRYPTON, SO THEY SAY. I AM GENERAL LOR-ZOD, OF THE KRYPTONIAN MILITIA. YOUR FATHER, JOR-EL, WRONGED ME GREATLY. SO THIS PLANET WILL BE THE FIRST PIECE OF KRYPTON’S RENEWED CONQUEST, TO COVER THIS GALAXY IN ITS LIGHT. NOW, YOU CAN FIGHT AND DIE ALONGSIDE THE PEOPLE OF THIS PLANET… OR KNEEL BEFORE ME.”
