About this artwork.

I decided to draw Primrose Azelhart from the game Octopath traveler. Since she’s amazing and I must admit... I’m a little obsessed. Lmao

I tried my best put as many refrences to her story into the drawing as possible. And I think I succeeded in that. I really love that everything in this piece has a meaning to this character. And I also absolutely love the composition of this drawing.

Meaning of the artwork.

SPOILER WARNING!!!
I will have to give some slight spoilers for Primrose’s chapter 1 to 4. And one tiny spoiler of the “daughter of the dark God” quest. In the game Octopath traveler. So If you still intend to play her story blind, I suggest you click away.

Trigger warning!!!
The following text mentions death, murder and sexism. BE WARNED!!!

Let’s start simple. In the middle we have Primrose Azelhart. She’s the character this drawing is about. The reason what she has this expression, is because her story is quite sad. Having lost her father at a young age. And being forced to wait a painful long life before finally claiming her revenge.

The flowers are primroses. It’s the flower she’s named after. Primroses can also represent the life cycle of a woman. Which fits her well, since part of her story goes as far as sexism sometimes. In which Primrose (the character) is most of the time the victim.

The crow wings and skull are a bit harder to explain. They represent the three men she’s trying to hunt down. These three men took her father from her. And thus forced her to run away. The skull represents the leader of the three while the wings represent his two underlings.

The dagger is represented in the story as the one thing she still has of her father. And this she cherishes it dearly. Because its the only she has to remember her father by.

The strings represent her biggest enemy in the story. Which could be seen as the leader of the three men, who is also known as “The puppet master”. Or her own mindset, since she does not have control of herself and is only driven by revenge. So the strings represent her not being able to control her own mind and body.

The purple color around the wings is basically a nod to the magic she’s able to use in the game, which is dark magic. And in the game dark magic gets a purple color scheme.

Then last... The background. The background represents the two most opposite of living environments she had. The top part represents her home in the Flatlands where she held the heir to become the next Lord of house Azelhart... Until her father got murdered. This gets represented by purple because purple the color of royalty, and she was basically the crown princess. Then the bottom orange part represents the Sunshade, the place she fled to. This place is a desert town focused on “entertainment for men” this month she was basically the lowest of the low now. That’s why it’s on the bottom.
