Even when I try to outline it with grey to make sure all my details I put into it don't go away when I color it all my work still goes to waste. Oh well.

I'm no artist, but have you tried perhaps switching it up a bit? Possibly using a dark grey, something very close to black but not entirely black? And outlining with actual black?

I might try that next time, but the problem is I don't think I have any coloring pencils like that, plus so far the characters with black hair I've had to do all have very very black hair, so if I didn't use the correct shade of black it would be too light and not correct.
