If Gamefreak was trying to balance the starters with the Dark/Psychic/Fighting secondary types, they failed. Also, I was just making fun of the meme but I once hated Mudkip and every water type too (except Vaporeon, too cute). Then one day I bought Explorers of Sky. I hadn't yet found out that it picks your starter with a personality quiz.

Five tries, five Mudkips, then I gave in. But after a while, I thought "You know, it is kinda cute..." Then it became my 3rd favorite pokemon (1st: Delphox, 2nd: Rotom) by the end of the main plot. I have also played Ruby with a Mudkip starter, named after the EoS Mudkip.
