Welcome back to Pokécharms! We've recently launched a new site and upgraded forums, so there may be a few teething issues as everything settles in. Please see our Relaunch FAQs for more information.
Just do your best. You already do impress me by just uploading your art. It's so nice to look at. Don't put so much pressure on yourself trying to make it look good for me, though, do what you think is right. Doing that impresses me, since not a lot of artists do that anymore. :/
I've just seen a lot of artists try to impress people and they get so much unneeded stress and that actually ruins their skill. They base their skill on what their audience likes, and if they do something that the audience hates, then they start worrying about making art and that puts more pressure on them to do better for them, when the only pressure they should get is from themselves.
They should see what they need to improve. Audience's constructive criticism is nice, especially if they make mistakes where almost EVERY artist shouldn't make or at least fix, but basing all of your impression on your audience instead of yourself can really hurt you in the long run.
I've actually seen artists stop making art for while because of this, and it took them awhile to find themselves in their own work. Trying to impress people ruins their own image that they put on their work. Yea, some people don't like some art-styles, but this is your art style. They can hate for all they care, since their opinion shouldn't matter.
Requests are a slightly different story, since you're trying to impress yourself and the person that requested in the first place, but if you like it, then they'll probably like it, too. Most likely. Artists shouldn't exactly cater to their audience too much. If they do, then they should do it with as much consideration on themselves, as well.
I kinda agree. I wouldn't say it ruins their skill so much, but rather they stagnate as they've found something which their audience likes, repeat it constantly just to appeal to them, and thus their art never really feels like it goes anywhere.
I've noticed it a bit on this site - there are some talented people but because they never really pushed themselves I found I personally grew incredibly bored of them, and got a bit frustrated at their universal praise when there were other artist's taking interesting directions with their works that were sort of ignored.
And sure, maybe they really just enjoy exactly where they are now and don't want to change really, but for an outsider, it quickly becomes boring. I haven't seen people stop drawing because of it however - do you have any examples of this?
