I'm curious, what do you mean by that? Do you need to do sidequests to complete the game?

You've gotta collect all of the Cacklebats, Heart Squids and buy all of the weapon upgrades. Which, y'know, I was gonna do anyways.

So you need to get all the little collectibles to even finish the game? Or is this a "true ending" or something?

It's a True Ending, but you only need the Cacklebats for it. The Heart Squids and upgrades are optional, but getting them all justifies completion.

So, you never played a Sonic game then? Since you need to get all the Chaos Emeralds to go into Super Sonic form and fight the true final boss...Classic Sonic though, new Sonic just gives them to you.
