Pokemon World KZ025: Krista: 1 To Be the First!

The sun rose as a flock of massive birds with brown feathers, and long red and yellow streaks of hair trailed in the breeze. The large birds soared over a small farming community in a hillside valley, with one house in specific, a yellow roof and white paint job.

Inside the top room, a disaster of a mess. Toys scattered along the floor with clothes as well. A desk with books tucked away into the corner where a single black backpack sat, zipped open with a change of clothes and a red hat. Meanwhile, parallel to the desk was a single bed, in it was a girl with short brown hair and a pair of baggy blue pyjamas. The girl rolled over a few times as an alarm went off, blaring loudly for a few seconds before starting up a radio.

“Good morning Pallet Town! This is David Spinner, here to bring you your morning forecasts, it appears that we’ll have sunny skies today, which is sure to be good for the new trainers leaving our humble Pallet Town to become Pokemon Trainers!” the radio played, “Yes, Travell Ironiss, Benjamin Cypress, Thomas Alpin, and Krista Donna will all be leaving to become Pokemon Trainers, we especially look forward to Krista Donna who will be the first female trainer from Pallet Town.”

“Krista! Get up! You’re going to be late for your first Pokemon!” a motherly tone called from downstairs, it had a sense of love but also nagging to it.

Slowly the girl in bed got up. Throwing her legs over the side of her bed she stood up and made her way to the bathroom to get ready. As she did, a red-furred fox with six fluffy orange tails curled up behind it approached Krista giving a happy cry to her.

“Hey Vulpix, good to see you too!” Krista smiled as she petted the fox Pokemon, it spit out a small ember as she did this.

Krista smiled, unfazed as she continued to the bathroom, pointing down the hallway for Vulpix, “Go on Vulpix, mom will feed you!” she smiled, closing the door behind her when she was in the bathroom.

Krista stopped and looked to the mirror with a smile, “This is it Krista, you studied hard for this, and now you’ll be the first girl trainer to be leaving Pallet Town!” she told herself, “The first… the first girl trainer!” she pumped herself up. Krista washed up and got dressed in her room, putting on a pair of blue jeans, a black t-shirt, and a red jacket. She grabbed her backpack and a red ball cap. Krista paused as she saw a picture of herself and her mom, gently holding it Krista smiled and thought about it, she was so young and naive in that photo. “You’ve changed, Krista.”

With that, Krista went down the hallway to the kitchen.

“Good morning Krista!” a voice chimed from the kitchen, a woman with a blue sweater, long white skirt and apron on smiled. Krista smiled back to her mom as she sat at the table, “Comment as tu dormi?”

“j'ai bien dormi maman” Krista replied back.

Krista’s mom smiled as she set a plate of toast and a glass of juice in front of Krista. Just as her daughter was about to eat, Krista’s mom reached under the rim of the ball cap, giving a strong flick up. The cap twirled in the air for a moment before falling behind her.

“Vous connaissez les règles. No hats at the dinner table!” Krista’s mom stated as she set down a bowl of brown gritty looking food, to which Vulpix ran over and happily began eating. “Now then, do you have everything you need?”

“Yes, maman, I packed everything last night, all I’m waiting on is my first Pokemon!” Krista smiled excitedly, “I thought about it a lot, and I think I’ll be great with any Pokemon they give me!” Krista leaned back with a slice of toast in her mouth as she smiled, “Bulbasaur would make for a good first Pokemon, I’ve heard it’s easy to raise. Squirtle’s not bad either, I hear it’s a solid and reliable Pokemon. Then there’s Charmander, no one can say Charmander’s not the most popular!”

Krista’s mom cringed a little hearing her daughter’s daydreams, “Well, I’m sure whichever Pokemon you get, it will be your dearest partner for life!”

Having finished her breakfast, Krista got up and left with her mom and Vulpix into Pallet Town. As they walked, Krista couldn’t help but take in the surroundings. The sun seemed exceptionally bright today, probably all for Krista’s future as a trainer. The loud yet soft river that ran through Pallet Town, watering their crops that always produced the ripest and most delicious fruits and vegetables imaginable.

“You know,” Krista’s mom spoke up as they walked, “I remember when you were 6, you learned that Dave caught a Pokemon to help his farm work. You were so excited that you asked me if you could help him with his farming just to get close to the Pokemon, you were so excited that there was a real-life Pokemon just a few doors down from ours.”

“I remember I worked that whole summer just to be close to it,” Krista smiled.

“You’d come home covered in dirt and mud, quel cauchemard.”

“It was worth it!”

“Oui,” Krista’s mom smiled, “After that day, I knew there was no stopping you when you wanted something. So when you said you wanted to be a Pokemon Trainer, originally I didn’t know what to think.”

Krista’s mom smiled fondly as she recalled that day, it was only a year ago. Krista came running into the house saying she wanted to become a Pokemon Trainer. Back then, a female trainer wasn’t the most common thing to hear about in Pallet Town, there already weren’t a lot of Pokemon Trainers in the town, but it was typically a male dominated profession in the town, seen more as a coming of age ritual for young boys. Krista’s mom had no idea that someday her own daughter would become the very first female trainer to leave Pallet Town. The recent years had been filled with a lot of change for Krista, but this was certainly the best one yet she felt.

Krista’s feet stopped as she looked ahead to the crowd gathered in front of a large brick building. On top an antenna with wires running into the building and attached to a large windmill. The crowd was cheering, Krista’s mom pushed Krista forward. The crowd, noticing Krista, immediately began parting to let her through. Krista’s face was red with pride as she took her place with the other three trainers leaving today.

Slowly the old door to the brick building opened, an older man with graying blonde hair stepped out. He had a long dirty white lab coat and a purple golf shirt underneath. He stepped towards the group, Krista noticed the fine ironing in his beige khakis who’s cuffs were rolled up over the brown laced shoes.

“Good morning everyone,” the man spoke, raising his hand. The commanding presence of this man silenced the crowd, “As you all know, I am Professor Samuel Oak. I am the one responsible for sending trainers on their journeys to become Pokemon Trainers. Today we say goodbye to four young citizens of our beautiful little town, and of course the first female trainer to leave our city.” Another man in a white lab coat came out of the building, he had a silver suitcase with him which he opened to Professor Oak.

Krista’s eyes widened as she saw three metal balls in the case, each one was red on the top and white on the bottom, a cool black trim traced the division, and finally in the it met at one point, the black circling a white button. Krista recognized this as a Pokeball.

Professor Oak grabbed one of the Pokeballs and held it up, “Now then, I will present each of the four trainers here with the Pokemon that I believe best matches them!” With that, Professor Oak walked over to them as his assistant followed with the case.

“For you Benjamin Cypress, I feel Bulbasaur will be the best suited for yourself.”

“For you Travell Ironmiss, for you Charmander is the best partner.”

“And for you Thomas Alpin, Squirtle is sure to be a great Pokemon.”

Krista’s shoulders sagged a little. Looking to the case, now empty of Pokeballs. Professor Oak had handed out all the Pokemon in the case, now there was nothing left. Her throat felt tight for a moment as Professor Oak stepped in front of her.

“And for you Krista,” he spoke up. Krista clenched her fist, getting ready. Professor Oak reached into his lab coat and took out a fourth Pokeball, presenting it to Krista, “I believe that this Pokemon is most fitting to be your partner.”

Krista took the Pokeball and held it close. Professor Oak’s assistant came by, handing over a small red metal box to each of them alongside five empty Pokeballs.

“Now then bright and shining new trainers of Pallet Town, please bring out the Pokemon I gave you,” Professor Oak stated.

Krista watched as the other three trainers held out their Pokeballs, each one opened, the inside shot out this flash of white energy that collected in front as a form took shape. Krista saw Bulbasaur who was a small, quadrupedal Pokemon with blue-green skin with darker patched. It had red eyes with white pupils, pointed ears on the top of its head, and a short, blunt snout with a wide mouth. On Bulbasaur’s back was a green plant bulb. Charmander was an orange lizard Pokemon with a rounded head, blue eyes and short stubby arms and small legs. Charmander had a long orange tail with a flickering flame on the end. Squirtle was a small bipedal turtle, small stubby hands and legs, a large blue head and a curled blue tail coming out the back of its brown shell.

Krista clenched her Pokeball as she looked at everyone else greeting their Pokemon. She closed her eyes and held out the Pokeball, it opened with the same white light flying out. The energy gathered as it formed into a small plump mouse-like Pokemon. Its fur was yellow with pointed yellow ears and a bolt shaped tail on its back. This Pokemon had large black eyes and a small mouth with big red circles on its cheeks.

Krista took out the red box, small text engraved on the back reading Pokedex HANDY505. She saw a line on the front and pulled as part of the device flipped open to reveal a few small buttons and a big screen. Krista then pointed it at the small Pokemon as the screen flashed for a second, then showing a picture of the Pokemon. ‘Pikachu, the Mouse Pokemon. An Electric Type. It keep its tail raised to monitor its surroundings. If you yank its tail it will try to bite you.’

Professor Oak smiled as he stepped towards Krista.

Krista looked to the professor confused, “Professor Oak, why did I get Pikachu and everyone else got a traditional starter Pokemon?”

“I told you I thought you would be best suited to be partners with Pikachu,” Professor Oak explained, “You see, Pallet Town is known for having a close relationship with the Wild Pokemon that live in the area, Pikachu especially.”

Krista looked down to the small yellow Pokemon that stared back at her.

Professor Oak continued, “I truly believe that Pikachu, a recently Wild Pokemon, will be the one who best accompanies you on your journey. It represents what Pallet Town is, and I believe that with it you’ll carry the legacy of what Pallet Town means to the world.”

Krista then knelt down to her new Pokemon. Pikachu looked up at her with wide eyes giving a cute, “Pika!” to her.

“Hey Pikachu,” she smiled, “My name’s Krista, my dream is to become the Champion of the Pokemon League.”

Pikachu smiled at Krista who picked up her new Pokemon, “Together, I know we’re going to reach that point!” she smiled.
