Itigus looked over to the origin of the voice, only to see that Merlot had followed him. "Interesting choice of makeup..." He shot back, turning his attention to his Pokemon once more. As he had decided before, he was going to simply ignore those who had decided they would continue to gloat, and kick him while he was down. Her entitled attitude certainly rubbed Itigus the wrong way, but he had chosen this spot to train, and would not be moving from it due to a minor annoyance.

"Alright, to start things off, Sicarius, we're going to need to go over the basics of everything, so you'll spar with Ajax for a bit to get some safe battle experience." At the moment there didn't seem to be any wild Pokemon around. However, it was common knowledge that one did not need wild Pokemon to train Pokemon. If anything, going around beating, and fainting random Pokemon who did not attack you was rather mean spirited. Pokemon were capable of gaining experience through sparring, and practice as well as real battles just like humans were. Though, Pokemon did learn much more when they were able to fight against one that was much stronger than them. It was only natural that fighting with someone better than you would make you see what you needed to improve.

For Itigus as a trainer, losing to Mero had given him important experience. He knew now to trust his instincts more than he had. If he had the feeling someone was wearing a mask, he would need to treat the situation more cautiously. He realized that another one of his shortcomings as a trainer was that he resorted to the most predictable move first. The Rockruff had, no doubt, seen an Iron Tail telegraphed from a mile away, and had properly dodged the inaccurate move.

Itigus had only trained Ajax to use the moves. He hadn't taught Ajax how to hit the moves. This was not some simple game with guaranteed accuracy, or mathematical equations that would lead to an outcome that was able to be calculated before hand. The games he'd seen that mimicked Pokemon battles had rightfully left out a lot of other variables to a Pokemon battle. Dodging, environment, feints, multiple attacks at once, and many other parts of a Pokemon battle were left out to make the game fun, and simple for everyone.

Pokemon were able to avoid Earthquake by hiding in trees, or jumping high into the air. Battles were not turn based, and Pokemon could bind certain parts of their opponents bodies to stop a move. A real world Pokemon battle was much more complex than that of a game, but it was also a lot more free.

Itigus needed to learn that straightforward, predictable fighting, was not going to help him in any capacity. He needed his Pokemon to memorize techniques for avoiding, reversing, and countering attacks without using an attack themselves. Itigus needed to be able to form a strategy in a matter of milliseconds, and his Pokemon needed to be able to react without him having to command it. As a trainer, he was there to offer his perspective as an outside viewer. Itigus needed able to communicate with his Pokemon while also being able to make sure that his opponents didn't figure out his plan until it was too late.

Itigus simply watched his two Pokemon fight without his intervention, looking for weaknesses in their technique. It was quite obvious that Ajax was a much more capable, and experienced fighter. Sicarius, however, tended to run, and dodge in a lot of their confrontations. It was in the Gastly's nature to be anti-confrontational. Sicarius could not take very many hits, and therefore it needed to avoid many of the Poochyena's attacks.

Itigus's red eyes darted from side to side as he closely analyzed them, narrowing his focus onto their battle, and their battle only. At the moment, it was clear that Sicarius lacked battle experience. It had not managed to return an attack, and simply kept dodging to a mixed success. Before long Ajax wore the Gastly down, and landed a decisive blow.

Their sparring hadn't harmed them for long, but it had given both of them exercise, and it had given Sicarius some experience. When a Pokemon was able to more effectively bring out more power behind their attacks, or move faster, or take attacks easier that was due to experience. They had the muscle memory within them to hit the right areas, and deal the most damage. To lessen the damage of blows by protecting critical areas from being hit. They learned better ways of moving about at quicker paces, and bringing out their innate energy to use in the most efficient way possible. For most Pokemon, their body would want to adapt to this new found power. When certain Pokemon gained enough battle experience, their bodies experienced evolution, so that they could survive easier. To a Pokemon's body, it was led to believe that the Pokemon was constantly fighting, and therefore needed to adapt suddenly, and quickly in order to survive.

At least, this is what Itigus theorized from his own observations. Pokemon could resist evolution, and tell their bodies not to adapt, but at the same time, they tended to want that extra boost in power. Evolutionary stones simply awoke this sense, this need, for a Pokemon to evolve into a newer, stronger, form. The same was true with many other methods of evolution.

It had not been observed that any Pokemon that evolved through trade had been naturally found in the wild. Golem, Machamp, Trevenant, Magmorter, and others had only been observed in history after the invention, and trading of Pokeballs. There was something about the relationship between humans and Pokemon that caused Pokemon to adopt stronger forms. The most recent development had been Mega evolution in this case. While temporary, Pokemon would be able to break past their limits, and achieve a new form through the resonance of it, and its trainer's feelings.

Itigus had wished that there had been more books on Pokemon in the public libraries at Dolus. Perhaps he would have been a better trainer if he had managed to get his hands on the latest research. All Itigus could do, however, is simply use his own mind to make educated guesses to fill the missing gaps.

He told Sicarius what he had observed about its fighting style. "While you're very fast, you're using too much of that energy to run away. You're too cautious, and that's why Ajax is able to keep you from attacking. If you use your speed to your advantage more, and dodge towards an attack, rather than away from it, you'll be close enough to return a hit." The Gastly nodded, floating back up into the air.

Itigus walked over to Ajax, "Most of your attacks aren't hitting Sicarius. I can see a lot of wasted energy from that. Try to predict where Sicarius is going to be before you attack, and make the adjustments. Remember, everything falls into a pattern, so if you can get that rhythm you'll be able to predict where he's going to be." Ajax nodded, barking, and taking a fighting stance.

With this, the two started up again. Itigus simply watched in silence, and continued to analyze what they needed to improve.

Terrance walked onto the forest. He had to get some training done before he headed to bed. but first he needed some cash. He smiled at the idea. He walked slowly around the gym entrance. He entered quietly. He looked and saw a lady giving out trainer cards. he read a nearby sign. "All trainer partciapting must have a Fortis Trainer card. 1000P each." Terrrance frowned. That was a lot of his money. It would leave him with only 200P. he silently bought his trainer card, and kept moving through the crowd. They were mainly watching the Gym battles, trying to figure out a strategy. A few were battling each other to gain some money. He chuckled at the thought. It would be way easier to just steal it. Especially, with all of these people just crowded up on each other. He walked throught he crowd. Most people didn't notice his hand sneaking in and out of their pockets. But then again, on average the people who had money had about only 50P on them. To be honest it made stealing that much harder. After about a few hours of this process, he had only raised 300P. It wasn't much, but it wasnt' the prize item. He was lucky enough to have found an empty pokeball in a man's pocket. He left the gym smiling. "If i ever need money, i could spend a day here, and get a bit." He thought to himself as he left.

When he entered th forest, his first priority was finding food. He quietly walked through the forests. He was alert for any pokemon, that might try to attack him. His limp as getting better. It was hardly noticble when he walked. He still couldn't run. That was going to be major problem. He snaked trough the forest, looking for berries. After a while he found four berries, a Sitrius berry, two Pecha berries and a Cheri berry. It wasn't much, but it was food. He stuck the berries in his bag and continued his trek back towards Muram City.

Her mouth opened in response, but nothing came. What did Itigus know of make-up anyways? Merlot defaulted to a small huff, sitting down on a nearby stump and watching the boy train his Pokemon.

A poochyena in his party, she could understand. Though in certain areas, they seemed almost as common as rats, poochyena became capable and tenacious once evolved. Though in the wild, they lived in packs, mightyena were independent in the sense that they still knew to only obey strong trainers. Formidable trainers. They chose who they would take commands from, and not the other way around. Merlot knew to give the bite pokemon at least that credit. It was Itigus' other, obviously newer, pokemon that concerned her.

Why would anyone want anything that was already dead? Merlot always wondered that whenever she saw a ghost-type trainer. Living spirits… they were unnatural. They shouldn’t exist. Why did they even have to exist? Sure, the little princess developed an interest in danger and most threatening things over the years (as long as they weren’t directed towards her), but she was not one to frolic with the dead. Or at least, not anymore.

A small reminder of the empty laughs and glowing red eyes was all it took to send a chill down her spine. Whether it was simply a ghost Pokemon or not, she couldn’t tell. And she didn’t want to. That moment had reminded her of something else from her youth, a doll possessed by pure hatred…

Merlot closed her eyes tight, forcing the memory away. That was long ago, and that pokemon was gone now.

She heard a stirring in the grass near her, and came back to reality. Her head turned only to catch the twitch of a small feather as a teal weasel-like body snuck beneath the shadows of trees. Her sneasel was already heading back into the forest on its own, and Merlot didn’t even notice. Standing up once more, she fixed her gaze on Itigus. He didn’t seem like he was heading anywhere anytime soon.

It didn’t take her long to catch up to Snee.

The pokemon never looked back at her as she followed it, instead resolving to creeping silently, hoping her trainer would do the same. Merlot watched its resolve for a few minutes, and then broke. “And… where do you think you are you going?” The sneasel gave its trainer a piercing glare before bounding up a tree, towards an unguarded nest.

Merlot had nearly forgotten about her hunger, and witnessing Snee pursue food brought back her hunger pains. Luckily, it didn’t take her long to spot a couple of special trees and gather and handful of oran, pecha, and aspear berries. She was about to grab some nanab berries, but some ominous buzzing and a flash of yellow made her rethink her selfishness. She wasn't sure if she could deal with another round of poison. Instead, she focused on her mini-harvest, eating berries until only one of each type was left. She pocketed the leftovers and began her walk back to the clearing, a content sneasel falling in behind her.

A small bought of relief washed through her she noticed Itigus still there, absorbed in special training. She had to admit, it was impressive how serious he was about the sparring. She didn't have the ability for that type of dedication yet. Maybe in a few days, after she adapted to the playing field, but not now. Besides, if her strategy concerning Itigus worked, and he accepted the mutually-benefitial deal she had to offer, Merlot's adaptation to trainer life would go over much smoother. She had to be thankful again. If he had left before she could talk to him, it would take a great deal of time to relocate him. And, time was costly.

She stepped closer to him this time, trying to ignore the ghastly She had to get his attention somehow, and silently waiting in the background wasn’t going to do it. Perhaps a little bribe, or- er- gift, could distract him for a little while. She took the last aspear berry out of her bag, holding it up into the air.

“Oi,” she called out, just a little more than five meters away from him. “Want a berry?"

Itigus had proceeded to train for the next three hours, up until 10:00. He still had the Pomeg berry in his pocket, and had planned to eat it for brunch, or even split it with his Pokemon. Considering they had been doing most of the work, and Itigus had merely been standing, and watching, he would probably give them the greater half. His body was rather used to not eating very much. He couldn't often eat very much either way.

He heard Merlot from behind himself, offering him a berry. "No." He said coldly. He knew what she was trying to do. She was trying to get his favor, and make him indebted to her in some way. Itigus didn't trust anyone, especially those who were wealthy. He already had his own food, and he was able to hunt down more if he needed to.

It was at this moment that Itigus saw something from the corner of his eye. An orange figure moved slowly from behind a thin bush. "Ajax! Sicarius!" He called them to attention. The two Pokemon looked over to their trainer, and Itigus gestured to the bush. Was something looking to attack them, or observe them? Whatever the case, he needed to force them out into the open.

"Sicarius! Mean Look! Ajax! Cut the bushes down with Iron Tail!" The two Pokemon sprung into action, the Gastly quickly preventing escape while Ajax removed the figure's hiding place. An orange blur jumped out into the open before tripping over itself, and sliding into the dirt. Itigus's eyes widened in horror at the sight before him.

A bloodied, and limping Growlithe stood in front of him, with a jagged cut down its eye, and an open wound running from its ribcage to its front leg. Its fur was matted down, and dirty as if it had been like this for a long time. It still looked as though it was ready for a fight, cornered in fear as it growled lowly in order to intimidate its attackers.

Itigus stepped closer carefully, only for the Growlithe to bare its teeth. "What happened to you?" He muttered in disbelief. He could see the look in the Growlithe's eye. It was afraid, and alone. It did not trust anyone, and was ready to defend itself at any moment. Itigus felt sorry for the Pokemon, and angry at whoever had done this.

He looked over to Ajax, and Sicarius, "We're going to need to capture it, but make sure you don't hurt it further than it already is. Sicarius, use Hypno-" Itigus was cut off suddenly as Ajax sprung into action, jumping in front of its trainer, and using its body as a shield from the Growlithe's attack. A powerful Close Combat was dished out onto the Dark type, causing Ajax to be sent flying into a nearby tree. "Shit!"

His Gastly used Hypnosis, but the Growlithe quickly evaded, only to yelp as it put pressure on its injured leg. Itigus looked over to Ajax, "Are you alright?" He called over, only to hear a bark in response. It seemed as though the Growlithe did not have a lot of strength behind its attacks. Itigus knew that the Pokemon was only standing due to adrenaline, and sheer willpower at this point. Blood dripped onto the leaves below.

Right now, Itigus needed to figure out how to keep it still, so that Sicarius could incapacitate it. At this moment, Itigus couldn't afford to waste time. Every second counted, and so Itigus approached the Pokemon carefully. "Hey, it's alright. We're not going to hurt you..." The Growlithe barked, and bared its teeth again. Ajax, and Sicarius began to move, only to stop when Itigus held his hand up. "Don't come any closer, let me deal with this."

He pulled the Pomeg berry from his pocket, and showed it to the Growlithe. "We're friendly..." The Growlithe continued to snarl at him, obviously having difficulty standing. Itigus placed it down on the ground, and kept his hands visible. The place was quiet now. Itigus moved forward once more. "I'm going to get you some help alright? You have to trust me..."

The Growlithe snapped, lunging forward, and chomping down onto the trainer's forearm, piercing straight through. Itigus grit his teeth, and stopped himself from yelling, holding his hands up to stop his Pokemon. The Growlithe kept its teeth embedded in his arm, and looked at Itigus with sad eyes.

The trainer touched the Pokemon gently, and midned its wounds, stroking its fur. "See? You don't need to be afraid..." He said calmly, watching as his Gastly had managed to sneak behind the Growlithe. "We're going to help you, so just rest for now..." He told the Pokemon as Sicarius landed the Hypnosis on the Growlithe.

The Fire type fell limp, and let go of his arm. Itigus reached down to his pantleg, and untied a cloth from it. He then proceeded to dress the Growlithe's wound to the best of his ability. When he finished, the trainer gently picked it up, and began to carry it.

I wont be able to carry it like this without doing more damage... It'll be faster if I had a Pokeball, but... wait I know...

Itigus took Ajax's Pokeball from his belt, and held the button down for an extended period of time. The ball clicked, and sparked, signifying that Ajax was no longer assigned to the ball, and now a wild Pokemon. "I'll put it in your ball temporarily Ajax." He told the Poochyena, tapping the ball onto the Growlithe, and sucking it inside. The ball clicked immidiately, and Itigus strapped it to his belt again.

The trainer then took off in a full sprint, his Poochyena, and Gastly following him close behind. The wound in his forearm hurt, but he knew he could deal with it later. Blood ran down his knuckle as he ran for Murum city. Right now, his priority was to save this Growlithe.

"Ok, Lileep. If we want to complete this gym, we need to train our defenses and maximize our survivability. I know both you and Shuckle are very good at that, but you need to practice a few moves first. Now, Ingrain!" The small purple Pokemon flashed green for a moment, reminding Xavier of his Cradily, before it faded. He couldn't see it, but he could tell she had planted herself into the ground. "Ready, my girl?" Slow, brave clicks filled the area as the Lileep nodded. Xavier pounded the tree he was standing next to, causing it to shake and a large yellow swarm to fly out, before revealing themselves as a hive of Combee and a Vespiquin. The Beehive Pokemon prepared to command an attack on a very large Pokemon, but stopped when it saw it was just a trainer and his Lileep.

"Hey there, your majesty. I need your assistance. I can point you towards the nearest Berry bush if you could help Lileep to train." Xavier asked the hive before bowing as a sign of respect. The chit-chatter of the hive filled the clearing before the queen nodded with a regal tone. Xavier pointed towards where he had first found Shuckle; the berries there would've grown by now. A swirl of yellow fell out of the hurricane behind the queen, quickly flashing towards the location where he had pointed out. Another section, this one smaller, made up of about a dozen Combee, fell out and into a honeycomb formation in front of the trainer and his Pokemon. A red cloud came out of the abdomen of the Vesipeqin before despersing, causing the eyes of the group to turn red.

"Lileep, put all of your energy into defending! Let's go!" The honeycomb split apart into four pieces before wind began to flow along them. "Gust.... Reminds me of the Archen back home." Xavier said to himself, reminiscing the time before he left home. The Archen messed with and the other fossils, the Tirtouga and Carracosta relaxing in their habitats, the Tyrunt competing with each other. It was perfect back in Unova.

The wind knocked him back to reality. Lileep was hanging on against the groups, but its health was draining. "Hang on, buddy! Keep taking it!" Xavier yelled, attempting to encourage his Pokemon. This was intense training, but it was clearly working. It would help her train on how to recover, which would make the difference on this gym. He would have to try his best to win or he couldn't do this. The one thing he learnt about prehistoric times is that only the strong can survive.

Her arm retreated at the sharp response. That didn’t take him long at all. Whether Itigus was smart or stupid, she couldn’t decide. Was there such a thing as being too cautious? Merlot couldn’t even get a word in with this guy. Maybe she would be better without him.

“Your loss.” Pocketing the berry, she eyed him suspiciously. She didn’t know much about berry-lore, except a couple common antidotes she had read before she left off. Even then, she couldn’t exactly remember what status oran berries healed. Was it sleep? And pecha berries were either poison or paralysis- they all started with ‘p’s. Aspear was one of the few that stood out to her, just because the name was so catchy. It was an odd mix of ‘aspire’ and ‘despair’, and it healed any person that was frozen in between those two trains of thought.

“You know,” She continued, regarding him a bit of pity in her voice, "if we ever battled, and I froze your pooch, you’d probably be wanting this.” It was big talk for someone who had never battled before in her life. Not to mention that, as of the moment, none of Snee’s moves could cause any sort of status condition. Merlot had been taught to bluff at an early age.

However, rather than replying or giving any indication that he had heard her words, Itigus was focusing on a bush. Yes, an ordinary bush. “Um, hello? Earth to gutter-boy? I’m speaking, here.”

Merlot followed his line of sight after no response to given, only to pick up a hint of something orange behind the bush. Her face scrunched up as she tried to see through the distance, but her expression went up in surprise when the boy called for an attack.

After the bushes were cut, the trail of blood was clear. The growlithe was surrounded by it. Did it get into a bad fight or something? Whatever happened, it hadn’t been pretty.

“Who could hurt something that cute?” Though she spoke, Merlot remained sidelined throughout the ordeal as Itigus reached out to the puppy pokemon, who regarded him with a strange animosity. It kind of felt wrong to witness the battle that ensued next- something threatened with a messy death made it seem more personal- but, nevertheless, Merlot grabbed a seat on the stump from before, watching the discourse with interest.

Despite its condition, the growlithe managed to fight off Itigus’ poochyena (his nickname was something like Axel, yeah?), forcing it to be, yet again, a weak ball of gray fluff on the ground. The ghastly (Sicily?) failed to land its attack on the speedy target. Merlot watched as the forest floor lapped up growlithe’s blood.

Eventually, she caught sight of an awkwardly-shaped red orb in Itigus’ hand. “Oh, he had a berry already…” Still, she didn’t see what the harm was in having two berries in one’s bag.

Appearently, the growlithe was just as stubborn as Itigus was, if not worse. Rather than accepting food held out in friendly gesture, it retaliated, striking the hand that had tried to feed it. She suddenly felt thankful that the boy didn’t have that sharp of teeth. Gastly managed to land a hypnosis- a scary attack, but Merlot had to admit its usefulness in this case- and the growlithe went limp. Then, Poochyena was freed, and the growlithe was his. Though, she would have lent him a pokeball if he had asked. It held more of a contract than a single berry ever could.

After that, he ran past her, not giving a single glance. She caught a bit of red rolling down his wrist. “You’re bleeding!” She called out to him, unsure whether he heard. Even if he did, a warning wouldn’t kill him. “Just thought I’d let you know!” Suddenly, the trees closed up around him, and Itigus was out of sight.

She had to sigh. So much for that plan. What a thick skull though! If this whole trainer thing didn’t work out for him, she thought he'd do well in construction. He could save money on a hardhat!

Blowing a rogue stand of hair from her eyes, she looked down at the sneasel beside her, who was still staring in the direction the boy had exited. It seemed Snee was expecting a command to follow him. She looked at Merlot for further instructions, and received only a shrug in return. “I was going off a hunch,” she explained, letting the moment die as she focused on a single tree.

“Hey, Snee.” She said, pointing to the wood in question. “Use fury swipes… on there.”

The sneasel gave Merlot a confused look, but followed orders, forming an x-shape with her claws on the middle of the bark. She nodded.

"Then, use, uh, agility.” Biting her lip as she spoke, Merlot was uncertain as to how this ‘training’ thing was supposed to work. After a second of trying to remember the books she scanned before she left on her journey, she decided to go with her gut. “Bounce off the limps of trees, and focus the, um, speed. Try to land accurately where you marked before. And- keep doing it.”

Merlot stood up, studying her pokemon. “Keep doing it until you get it right.”

Perhaps training could be easy after all.

Jeddy and his two companions continued their trek towards Murum. The Kricketot perched on his shoulder served as an eager guide, buzzing and chirping excitedly along the way. Jeddy couldn't help but compare himself to the little bug. Both were inexperienced but kept the music alive. He needed to acquire this insect counterpart a Pokeball soon. However, the funds were simply not there for everything the trio would need to succeed. "Little buddies, we need to rehearse!"

Sterling turned his attention towards his master as if snapping out of a daydream. The Noibat had been eyeing the team's new addition with a hungry curiosity. They were friends now, but the Pokemon's carnivorous instinct was still strong. The scrawny breakfast he had eaten was wearing thin in his belly. If Sterling hadn't respected Jeddy as much as he did, that bug may not be intact at this point in time.

Maestro the Kricketot was obliviously naive to any of Sterling's ill intentions . This was his first adventure from the safety of the meadow's protection. His smaller antennae had caused the elder Kricketune to shelter him from extended freedoms. The new trainer he had bonded with made him feel safe and stronger than the runt he had always been branded. He was determined to prove to this trainer that he could be a dependable partner.

"I know you guys have the pipes... But can you keep the rhythm?" Jeddy's challenge roused his comrades. Sterling answered by orbiting its trainer overhead with astonishing speed. The Noibat's small, leathery wings fluttered effortlessly while propelling him onwards. Maestro continued to optimistically buzz atop Jeddy's shoulder, seemingly cheering for his flying friend.

Jeddy knew they'd have to start preparing for upcoming conflict. He had overheard many horror stories while riding the Nimbasa Battle Subway back in his home region of Unova. This rookie squad would need to start off with something not too difficult. Screeching supersonic waves at a Machamp may have been a nifty escape trick, but only actual combat experience could help Jeddy win his first gym badge in the Fortis League. He could have easily been killed during that first encounter. It wasn't just about winning now. All of Jeddy's aspirations would be meaningless if he didn't survive.

A sound from up ahead caused Sterling's ears to twitch. The Noibat silently glided to a nearby treetop to observe. Jeddy raised one finger to signal for little Maestro to be quiet. Jeddy recognized his Noibat's cues. When Sterling's ears stopped rotating and faced a certain direction, the creature was observing every detail with precise sonar. Something of interest was definitely in the vicinity. The musician kept his head low and stealthily approached the area where Sterling was obviously concerned.

A peak from behind the tree revealed two Combee that were busy pollinating an Oran berry bush.
The lower portion of their honeycomb bodies glistened with sweet, golden nectar. The thought of fresh honey expertly crafted by Pokemon was tantalizing to the hungry trainer. The thought of sticky, delicious insect parts had the same effect on his Noibat. Both of their grumbling bellies would surely give them away. However, it was the jolly temperament of an excited Kricketot that blew their cover.

Having recognized other bug Pokemon, Maestro chimed his xylophone-like antennae in a happy flourish. The two wild bees zipped frantically about in alarm. It was difficult enough competing with other Pokemon for food in the wild. The presence of other bugs was a threat to the well-being of a Combee's hive. Combee would defend their hive to the death. Only its security or a direct order from their queen could provoke aggressive behavior. Once the two winged insects isolated the source of the interference, their seemingly cute and innocent eyes blazed red with hostile intentions. Each of the Pokemon's three faces were united in their offense. They buzzed straight towards Jeddy and Maestro.

Sterling was quick to meet the aggressors' advance. His concealed vantage point gave him the perfect opportunity to swoop down and tackle one of the Combee with a ferocious maneuver. The other foe was caught off guard, but stayed vigilant on its course for the human and rival bug. All three mouths were open with adorable fangs. They clamped down on Jeddy's shoulder, causing Maestro to fall to the ground. Jeddy's shoulder burned instantly from his bugbite trifecta. His jacket was tough, but the bee Pokemon was persistent in its martyrdom.

Maestro let out a high-pitched growl. The affected Combee reclused from the shriek for a brief moment before continuing the assault. However, it's attacks were noticeably less vigorous. Jeddy was able to use his lutecase to swat back the creature's advance. He continued his own attack in attempt to move forward and assist Sterling.

The bat and the bee were brawling intensely. Sterling's surprise attack had definitely injured his opponent, but these Combee would die for their hive in an instant. The two combatants exchanged biting attacks. Combee's three mouths gave it a significant advantage. The bug bites weren't very effective, but they were taking a toll on such an inexperienced Noibat. Sterling's attempts to absorb vitality from his foe were not as successful as his stomach had led him to believe.

Jeddy had to regroup fast. The Combee that had bitten him began to flap its wings in an angry gust. Before being blown away, Maestro hid behind the trainer and his lutecase. At first, the larger surface area made the wind resistance increase. Jeddy almost lost his footing before rotating the case to split the force of the attack. Maestro continued to growl from behind, growing in confidence with each of Jeddy's steps towards the enemy.

Meanwhile, Sterling had grown tired of being bitten by things he was supposed to eat. The Noibat quickly learned how to properly use his mandible for a true bite attack. Using his carnivorous instinct, he chomped down on his opponent with extreme prejudice. The Noibat's fangs pierced through the enemy's honeycomb exterior. The insect flinched in pain while the bat licked the sweet taste of blood and nectar from its heart-shaped nose.

Jeddy yelled for Sterling's help. He couldn't get close enough to swat the other bee to stop consecutive gusts. The steadfast Combee continued to pound its wings in defiance. "USE SUPERSONIC!" Jeddy exclaimed over the roar of the wind. Sterling dutifully responded and radiated the distorted sound waves towards the assailant. The red eyes of the insect's faces began to panic. Its three minds started quarreling over the coordination of its body. With a disruption in mobility, the offbeat flapping caused the triad Pokemon to spiral into the ground. With a brief pause in the fray, Jeddy seized the opportunity for another escape. The musician slung his case on his back, withdrew Sterling into his ball, stuffed Maestro into his jacket, and plummeted through the Oran bushes in full retreat. However, he didn't expect the scene on the other side.

A surprised man of at least 30 stood opposite of a similar encounter. Several Combee were blasting gust attacks towards a rooted plant Pokemon that Jeddy had never seen. Before introductions could be made, the pair of insect pursuers burst through the bushes where Jeddy had entered. An angry Vespiquen locked eyes with the new arrival.

"Um....your Majesty?" was all Jeddy could muster.

The sound of blowing and rushing leaves grew louder. Xavier could feel the small Pokemon's struggle to keep itself healed, but the Ingrain was doing its job. Finally, the small Combee slowed the wind, and stopped attacking. The queen seemed to be interested in something else. Looking over to the side, a trainer, along with a barely visible Pokemon in her jacket, had appeared on the scene. "Your Majesty, please call off your subjects. You got your berries, and I think that would be enough training for now." Xavier said, bowing just for added effect.

The red eyes of the Combee dulled back to black as they separated and returned to the hive. Just in time, the group of Combee, along with a few red-eyed ones, returned from over the trees. They seemed to be full on Honey, as most of them had puffed-up abdomens. The queen's gem flashed blue and they all got onto a formation and slowly lowered back into the hive.

Finally focusing on the roughed-up trainer, Xavier returned Lileep to its ball to let it rest. "You ok?" He asked, even though he clearly was not. It was just common courtesy. "Don't worry, these guys were just helping me train. Vespiquin are pretty smart." He said, smiling before sliding his hands into the pockets of his labcoat. Like he said before, it made him feel professional. "So. I'm Xavier, Pokemon Professor. I run a Fossil Rehabilition center in Unova." He said, being sure to stand up straight. "That Pokemon you just saw me with was a Lileep, one of my favorite ancient Pokemon. Did you know it can't move without a Pokeball or somebody carrying it?" Xavier said, happy to list off facts.

"Anyway, I'm missing the point. Do you need help? You look a little... Not very good." Xavier said, before chuckling a little at his messed-up word. Indeed, it looked like he encountered some Combee of his own. Xavier didn't know much about the little buggers, pun intended, but what he did know is that they were ferocious in groups. The fact that Lileep couldn't live long against the, without an Ingrain really put it into perspective. Petting the ball a bit, he turned back to the trainer, awaiting an answer.

Jeddy breathed a sigh of relief as the bee Pokemon followed their leader's command and returned to their hive. The Supersonic-and-run trick was becoming increasingly exhausting. The young man would have been seriously in trouble if not for his savior. Jeddy ignored his shoulder pain and introduced himself.

"Wow, man. I can't believe how angry those Combee got. You really saved by bee-hind." Jeddy chuckled at slight bit at his pitiful pun. He wasn't scared to embarrass himself in front of new people. "The name is Jeddy Reed. I'm a traveling entertainer, but I'm attempting the Fortis League to hone my skills and gain some inspiration. Did you say that was an ancient Pokemon you revived?! That's friggin awesome, dude..uh...sir...uh.,, Professor!"

Jeddy admired the fortitude of Lileep. The perseverance of a fossil to adapt and survive in modern times was nothing to scoff at. Daydreams of dinosaur Pokemon began devouring the musician's thoughts. The idea was more than a muse. Jeddy could write an entire concept album with that type of material. He managed to stop his mental drooling long enough to continue his conversation.

"This is little Maestro. He's a cool little bro." The tiny cricket revealed himself from Jeddy's jacket and chirped a happy greeting. The trainer placed his friend on the ground so he could take a bow. "And this is my buddy, Sterling", Jeddy added, summoning the tired bat from his ball. "We just had our first real fight with those Combee. I would have been in some serious trouble without you. My partners help me perform my songs, but we are having a little trouble getting the knack for fighting. We'd love to play for you sometime for helping us. I really need to get to the next town for supplies, though. I think Sterling is injured. Could you point us in the right direction, broski..uh...Professor?"

Itigus Kaedus
Itigus burst through the Pokemon Center doors, and quickly put the Growlithe's ball on the table, along with 1000P, "I need this one to be healed immediately! It's got multiple lacerations across it's body, and a broken leg."

The nurse at the counter seemed rather surprised, but quickly understood, and took the ball from the counter. She went to the back, and the room was silent. Itigus felt others looking at him, and, before long, whispers started to be exchanged.

Ajax sat atop his shoulder with a worried expression on its face. Meanwhile it's trainer took a seat.

"Multiple cuts?" "A broken leg?" "That trainer really is bad news." "He's that guy who went up against a Genus right? He probably trained is Pokemon too hard, and it got hurt."

Ajax began to growl, but Itigus raised his hand up for it to stop. "Ignore them. What matters is that the Growlithe is safe..." Itigus didn't really plan to keep the Growlithe. He knew exactly how Pokemon like that tended to act. They no longer trusted humans, and so it would be a waste of his time to force the Pokemon to stay with him. As it was, Itigus could barely feed the Pokemon he currently had.

Itigus could only ponder how the Growlithe had gotten into the poor shape it did. It was definitely bred for battle, having Close Combat as one of its moves. Itigus could think that this was a Pokemon that had been abandoned by its trainer after they lost a hard battle. The rules of Fortis dictated that all Pokemon be released immediately after losing their challenge, and the Growlithe seemed as though it was a freshly released Pokemon.

Considering Itigus was taking the challenge himself, he found it rather cruel to force the Pokemon to go through the same trauma again. As it was, Itigus was running low on funds, and he had not gotten to where he'd wanted to be at the end of today's training. This was surely a setback for Itigus, but he knew he couldn't have simply left the Growlithe to die.

Winning the league didn't matter if he lost his way while doing so.

He heard the chime of the Pokemon Center bell, and looked up to see the nurse present the Pokeball to him. "Here you are sir. Unfortunately, the wounds were too deep to heal fully, so it will remain with those scars. However, whatever cut across its eye didn't damage it, so it should be able to see with both eyes."

Itigus took the ball, "Thank you very much." He said graciously.

"If I may ask, how did your Growlithe come to be in that state?"

Itigus looked at the Growlithe through the transparent dome of the ball, "I don't know, I was training in the forest, and I happened to find it like that. It took a bit to put it to sleep, so I could catch it."

The nurse nodded, "Oh, I see, well would you like treatment for your arm?"

Itigus looked down at his arm, and then to the floor underneath him. It was coated in blood, and rather gruesome looking, "Oh... no I'm fine." The trainer had already spent enough money. He knew he could simply dress the wound later.

The nurse smiled a bit, and beckoned for him to follow. "It's free of charge. Besides, I can't have you bleeding all over my floor."

Itigus nodded, and followed, his Poochyena wagging its tail. He sat down on one of the beds, and cradled his arm, trying not to bleed onto the floor.

The nurse had grabbed some cloth, and alcohol to clean the wound. "You're lucky the Growlithe didn't have any signs of rabies, or diseases. Hold out your arm."
Itigus did as he was asked, pulling up his sleeve, and holding out his forearm. The nurse poured alcohol onto the cloth, and began to clean the wound. Itigus grit his teeth, and tensed up as the cloth burned his wound.

"You're pretty quiet. Most people scream outright when I clean their wound." The nurse complimented, cleaning the dried blood from his skin. "Hmmmm you'll need some stitches... " She mumbled, looking at the deep wounds on both sides of his arms. "That Growlithe really bit down hard huh? Bet that hurt a lot."

"Yeah..." Itigus replied quietly, not entirely sure what else to say. He watched as the nurse threaded a needle, and sat back down in front of him. "Now, it's gonna hurt a bit..." She warned, poking then needle through his skin, and starting to sew the wound back together. Itigus simply tensed up, but did not scream.

It was a habit he had formed during his childhood. When his parents had beaten him, they would tell him to stop screaming. If he didn't, they would simply beat him harder. The male had learned to keep himself quiet when enduring pain, too afraid that it would only continue to cause him more pain if he did cry out.

He watched as the nurse dabbed up blood, and sewed the line of the Growlithe's bite up. When she finally finished, the last stitch, she cleaned it again, and proceeded to dress his wound. "It'll take one to two weeks to heal up enough. If the stitches don't fall out by then, just come here again, and get them removed. You should change bandages every day, so you can come in, and I'll do it for free."

Itigus was rather confused by this nurse. "Why are you doing this for me?"

The nurse chuckled, and pointed to Ajax. "You're really nice to Pokemon right? Even when that Poochyena's not in its Pokeball it still follows you around. I suppose that's rare to see in this region. Everyone's always out for themselves, and saving that Growlithe probably put you in a bad spot for your challenge right?"

Itigus nodded, not saying a word. The perception of the nurse was spot on.

"Any friend of a Pokemon's is a friend of mine. You were in here earlier today too right? Standing up to the Genus fellow?"

Itigus nodded once more.

"Well, if you're able to stand up to someone who hurts your Pokemon like that, then you've got my support. You wouldn't believe how many people like him try to walk all over us. If you need anything, don't be afraid to ask okay?"

Itigus wasn't really sure what to say. He didn't feel like the nurse had any ill intent, but at the same time he didn't know if he wanted to place his trust in her.

"My name's Laeta, I'm new here, so I can't really heal your Pokemon free of charge without a gym badge, but I do have medicine at my house, so if you need to heal your Poochyena I can do that."

Itigus looked at Ajax. It was true that the Pokemon had suffered a blow from the Growlithe. Even though the Poochyena tried to hold itself as if it were completely fine, it was obvious that it was feeling some pain.

"My shift ends in an hour, so if you meet me then, I'll take you to my apartment, and give your Pokemon some treatment."

Itigus was still put off by Laeta's kindness. He hadn't really experienced someone offering their help simply because he loved Pokemon, and treated them well. Even so, Itigus needed to say something, and the fact that Ajax was in pain made him incline to take the chance. "A-Alright, I'll go with you to heal Ajax, and Sicarius."

Laeta's face brightened, "Okay! Well, I'll see you in an hour then, for now..." The nurse walked over to a cabinet, and took a purple spray bottle from it, "Use this on your Poochyena. It's a Potion, so it'll numb the pain, and allow it to heal faster while you wait." She handed it to Itigus, and leaned in, "I'll just tell them it was used on the Growlithe you brought in, so you don't need to worry about payment."

The trainer blinked, and nodded, still caught off guard by her kindness. Ajax hopped onto the table, and barked, wagging its tail. Itigus sprayed the potion onto the affected areas of the Poochyena's body until it ran out. With this, the Poochyena jumped onto his shoulder once more, and sat down. As he had applied the potion, Laeta had left, leading Itigus to believe he was allowed to exit now.

The potion had healed Ajax up to fighting capacity, and it looked like the dark type was no longer in pain. As he exited the Pokemon Center, he headed towards the woods once more. At the very edge of the woods, he plucked the Growlithe's ball from his belt, and released it. He held down the button, and saw it flash blue for a moment to signify that it had unassigned the Growlithe from the ball. Itigus then tapped the ball against Ajax's head, and sucked the Poochyena in, only for it to click immediately.

As he looked back to where he released the Growlithe, he was surprised to see the Pokemon was still there. "Oh... Sorry for scaring you, and everything. I'm glad you're okay, but I don't think you want to be with me anymore, so..."

The Growlithe tilted its head, and looked behind itself, and then back to Itigus. It stayed in place, and did not make any attempt to run off, or attack Itigus.
Itigus turned, and began to walk away, "I'll be doing the gym challenge, so I don't want you to be put in the same situation as before." He then felt something tug his pantleg, only to look down and see the Growlithe had his maw tightly clamped down onto it.

It was obvious to Itigus what this meant. "Are you sure?" The Growlithe nodded, and barked happily with a wag of its tail. "Alright, I'm not going to stop you if that's what you wanna do. Cmon, let's get you a Pokeball of your own."

With this, Itigus walked towards the Pokemon Center once more. This time, with a Growlithe following him.

Mero Genus
Mero watched as a blue blur bounded between the rocks with grace, and speed, before smashing a large boulder to bits. His Trevenant, Vullaby, and Lairon all attempted to hit the blur with their own attacks, only to be masterfully dodged by their target.

With a firm commanding tone, Mero commanded his Pokemon, "Alright! That's enough, the training is complete!"

The Pokemon immediately stopped attacking, and panted heavily. The blur stopped in front of him, revealing Fenrir to have been their target. A red aura still blazed around the Rockruff as it panted in exhaustion.

Mero had spent most of the day conducting dual training for his Pokemon. For one, Fenrir had been taught to maneuver, and attack with twice its usual power, and speed. On the other hand, his Pokemon had been training to deal with a fast opponent like Fenrir. Throughout the day, Fenrir had been hit multiple times by the attacks of his fellow Pokemon, and had learned the hard way on how to properly adapt, and dodge attacks.

Mero had no doubt seen all his Pokemon improve, but he could only see that his Vullaby was falling behind, and therefore the weakest link to his team. At the moment, Mero would keep the Pokemon just in case its evolution proved useful later on, but this was only if it proved useful in time. The only thing stopping Mero from releasing the Vullaby, and reusing its Pokeball was the fact that he only needed three Pokemon to challenge the gym, and having one Pokemon at full health was always a good idea.

Naturally, the trainer did not anticipate losing to Dro in the slightest. However, he did expect a good battle, which is why he had been preparing so thoroughly for it. Mero had put a self imposed challenge onto himself. Any trainer could simply defeat a gym leader on their second or third try. However, Mero wanted to beat every last Gym leader on his first try.

He held himself to a higher standard than other trainers, and therefore vowed to start over if he should lose even a single gym battle. Mero wasn't really worried, however, as he knew that he was worth much more than simply eight badges already. If he could not accomplish this challenge, then, in his mind, he would never be able to win against the Fortis Champion.

He returned all of his Pokemon, and proceeded to walk into the local healing center of the gym. His Pokemon were quickly healed up for the fee of the usual 1000P. With this, Mero walked up into the spectator stands, wanting to watch the trainers who had taken his place on the day he'd planned to challenge the gym.

All the training he had done today was merely extra. He had been ready to face off against the gym leader today, but instead was forced to wait due to the fact that his chosen day was completely full. Most of the battles he watched were nothing to brag about. Simple insults to the Fortis league altogether. It was such a drab, and boring show that Mero found it difficult to even stay awake.

It made him rather annoyed that these people were the ones in his place. They were the ones who had forced him to delay his goal for a full day. It was such a pitiful performance that Mero could barely even gain any information from Dro's fighting style.

Because of this boring display, Mero's mind had begun to wander. The one trainer he had found interesting so far happened to be a gutter rat. If that wasn't a disgrace to the Fortis League itself, he did not know what was.

Itigus... and that Poochyena too. He thought to himself. The two were definitely a mirror of one another. Both of them had tenacity, and both seemed to work hard toward their goal. Both of them were fearless, and willing to die. It was said that Pokemon began to look more like their trainers, and vice versa when they were fully synchronized.

Pokemon seemed to be able to gain power from their trainers. There were multiple reports of Pokemon surviving attacks they shouldn't have, or their bodies curing themselves of status without any medicine given to them. At the same time, Mega Evolution could only be performed when the trainer had a unique bond with Pokemon. It was not so much the friendship between them that mattered, but rather the ability for the trainer to understand Pokemon to an extraordinary extent.

Mero remembered reading about the first hand reports of people who had mega evolved their Pokemon. It was said that their were imperfect mega evolutions as well if the trainer was not fully capable of mega evolution. It was because of this that some Pokemon felt intense anger, or pain from mega evolution. However, to those that had done it properly, they always reported being able to occasionally see from the Pokemon's point of view. As if their minds left their own bodies, and entered the Pokemon. The feeling of unity between them, and their trainer was something noted by every single one of them. Mero had never been gifted a keystone, even though he had wanted one.

Such power was reserved to only the most gifted trainers, so it was only natural that Mero was one such person. However, he had never encountered anyone with the rare stones, so he had never experienced it for himself. Mega stones were the perfect symbol of the Genus family ideology. Only those with a natural talent for Pokemon could break limitations.

However, it was for this very reason that Itigus bothered Mero. For some reason, the Poochyena he owned had managed a feat it shouldn't have possibly been able to. Even after it had fainted, it had somehow managed to wake up, and muster enough power behind an attack to beat his Vullaby. It was clear to Mero that, while the Vullaby was his weakest Pokemon, it was still vastly superior to the Poochyena.

He couldn't figure out how that Poochyena had been able to do what it did. It hadn't changed form, so it must have meant that Itigus had been with the Pokemon for an incredibly long time. Perhaps he had even bonded with it to such an extent that the Poochyena had began to display the affection phenomena. Although, he doubted such a poor gutter rat would ever be able to afford such luxuries as a Pokepuff, or a Pokebean.

Itigus intrigued Mero to no end. However, despite being intriguing, Mero doubted such an unreliable power would really take the trainer very far. The Poochyena was symbolic of Itigus in the fact that they both had a much lower limitation than everyone else. No matter how hard they worked, they would reach a limit they could not break through, that was the simple fact.

No one had ever been able to use a Mightyena past the third gym, and be successful. Mightyena was simply too weak of a Pokemon overall to get anywhere, and Mero found that Itigus's potential was relatively the same. Perhaps Mero could have one interesting battle with Itigus before he failed the challenge. However, he did doubt even that much.

Terrance's entire body was tired. he was tired. He had constantly trained Hawlucha and Riolu. They were stronger, but only by a small amount. Then a blast over energy caught his attention. There was a large explosion that came from the nearby trees. Terrance rushed ahead to see a Pawniard firing a Dark Pulse at a group of Primeape. The Steel Type fought well. Then the Primeape started to screech, and then they all fired a Hyper Beam. The Pawniard took the attacks, and didn't move an inch. He looked like he might collapse any minute. Then the Pawiard charged the nearest one with an Aerial Ace attack.

The Primeape took the attack, but the Pawniard was knocked away. Terrance looked at the Pokeball he had stolen. It was scratched up, but it would still function. Without the Pawiard seeing him, he tossed the Pokeball at Pawiard. It was too weak to resist and was caught. The Primeape's saw Terrance and went nuts. They all fired another Hyper Beam at Terrance, knocking away the pokeball. Terrance dove for the ball and grabbed it. he tossed out Hawlucha's Pokeball, while laying on the ground.

"Hawlucha, use Flying Press!" He comanded. Hawlucha jumped into the air and attacked the nearest Primeape, knocking it away. "Now Wing Attack!" Terrance shouted. Hawlucha dove and slashed through a crowd of Primeapes, knocking them out. The remaining Primeapes saw this and began to scatter. Terrance returned Hawlucha to his Pokeball and struggled to his feet. His leg was beginning to act up again, due to him sliding to grab Pawiniard's Pokeball. Terrrance smiled. he now had a team of three, and he could cover, a small chunk of Riolu and Hawlucha's weakness now. It wasn't the ideal team but it would work. he checked his pocket. he only had 500P left. he couldn't buy heal the injured Pawniard. He shrugged and wandered towards the PokeMart, where he bought a Potion to heal the Pawniard. It took a lot of cash out of his wallet.

Terrance scowled to himself. He was practically broke. he needed to win a gym badge, and get the free pokemon treatment. He left the Pokemon center and just wandered around for a little but, before he realized it was late. he needed to get somewhere to sleep. He found a large Oak tree and climbed up on it's branches and tried ot let sleep take him. His body ached, but he was used to it. The real problem, was his team. They were tired and he was low on cash. He would need to do some battling tomorrow to make some cash. He closed his eyes and let sleep overtake him.

A musician? That was interesting. Xavier had heard other good musicians in the nearby restaurant in his hometown. There was this one accordion player that was quite good. Music was a calming thing. He couldn't describe it. The sound of it was an exciting yet deep thing. From what he could see, Jeddy played some kind of stringed instrument from the shape of the case. It reminded him of an old friend back from Unova who could play a ukulele. The soft strums were soothing, yet amazing.

"So you're a musician, but you're trying to conquer the league to increase your skills and get inspiration? Funny. I'm taking a break from, well, science to do some leagues and collect more data." Xavier said, chuckling a little. His eyes soon darted to the small bat on the side from Jeddy. "Your Pokemon do look a little bat-tered. Heh." He had picked that one up from one of his friends who lived near Wellspring Cave. Man, he would have to go back to Unova after this to check up on all of them, especially his fossils. Maybe he could even grab a few badges while he's there.

Xavier's eyebrows rose as he remembered something. Rummaging through his bag, he tossed a small, purple object in Jeddy's direction. The spray-bottle form showed itself as a potion, the basic healing remedy and what everybody wishes they had. Xavier thought that making allies would be the best way to get past the league, so kindness was the greatest asset in his toolkit. "Say, take that potion and heal your 'mons. I'll take you to Murum, as I was about to go back anyway to sleep. In return, why don't you play some songs for me on the way back? It's been a while since I heard anything original." Xavier asked, nodding his head.

(Sorry for the short post. I'm burnt out from writing the newest chapter of Parasitic, so I'll be able to do better next post.)

Jeddy almost fumbled as he caught the professor's unexpected gift. If the musician had not conducted his mini-social experiment in Dolus, he might not have realized the significance of the basic potion in the Fortis region. They were twice as expensive than in his home of Unova. It was very likely that one might get attacked for flashing them around in the wrong alley here. This gesture that Xavier had demonstrated was more than Jeddy felt like his novice skills deserved, but he acknowledged the professor's request for original music.

"I couldn't possibly take this whole potion from you over some bug bites, man...uh...Professor. People steal from you in Dolus for medicine like this. I'm not sure if we really need it as much as you could need it later. But really, man...uh...sir, we appreciate you offering to help us out. It was really our own fault. Please keep it."

Jeddy handed the purple spray bottle back towards his friendly new acquaintance and withdrew his Noibat. "I'm gonna let Sterling sleep it off in his Pokeball. He'll feel better with some good rest and a good meal in his belly. We actually wrote our first song in this region about how quick folks will pickpocket you in Dolus over money and medicine. We let somebody steal from us when we first got off the boat, and we watched him run and buy an antidote for his sick Pokemon. Some really depressin' business. Even though Sterling was there when I wrote the first part, Maestro has been helping us to finish it this morning. I'll let him accompany me with his part on our journey to Murum. Also, I don't have a Pokeball for him at this time, so it would be rude not to let the fella chime in.'' The musician chuckled as the tiny Kricketot chirped happily in agreement.

It didn't take long for Jeddy to unsheath his lute, check his tune, and begin performing the song for Xavier. He wasn't shy to showcase his original creations to esteemed Pokemon professors, especially those that worked with prehistoric dinopokemon. The notes flowed more expertly and definitively because of the recent practice. The musician had tweaked his lyrics more to his liking. He'd probably change and add more until he was satisfied, but Maestro was eager to help Jeddy demo the song's current version. The Kricketot began his xylophone-like arpeggio of the song's intro, and the lute quickly joined the sound with a rhythmic bounce.

"On the streets is where they play.
Hungry mouths, they have a game.
On the streets is where they prey.
Hungry Meowths, they earn Payday!
Those cats will burgle all yo bling
As silent as the Noctowl's wing.
And you won't even miss a thing
Until yo stomach starts a-rumbling,
Scratch it, Snatch it, Put it in a basket!
Paw up all the loot or you'll end up in a casket!
Quickly, Swiftly, Leave their pockets empty!
Gettin' caught's the only way they can call ya guilty!
On the streets is where they play.
Hungry mouths, they have a game.
On the streets is where they prey.
Hungry Meowths, they love Payday!
Those cats-o-klepto have their fill
From cups of plenty that did spill.
Victims are now hungry and ill.
New kittens learn the thieving skill.
Scratch it! Snatch it! Put it in a basket!
Paw up all the loot, or you'll end up in a casket!
Quickly, Swiftly, Leave their pockets empty!
Gettin' caught's the only way they can call ya guilty!"

Jeddy and Maestro took turns improvising some leading melodies. The little insect was adapting to his trainer's musical style quickly, and the pair complemented each others' sound well. Jeddy exaggerated the singing of the last chorus to a comical level, and the duo erupted with laughter as they let their last notes ring out and fade away. The Kricketot mounted on Jeddy's shoulder bowed with balance support from its trainer. The pair smiled at Professor Cross's approval. It seems as though they had at least one human fan in Fortis.

The group spent the remainder of the journey out of the forest in a similar manner. Jeddy played a few of his originals, including his Machamp escape. Professor Cross listened in awe at the story and smiled while listening to the musical rendition of the event. Jeddy also shared some adaptations of a few older Pokeshanties that were popular on the Battle Subway rails. He asked Xavier his opinions on a few riffs so that he could begin work on a new song about prehistoric Pokemon. However, the riffs quickly subsided to more questions about ancient beasts and how they used to survive in the past. The topic fascinated Jeddy, and he was eager to learn as much as he could about the subject before attempting to butcher it with ignorant lyrics. Usually, the young musician had trouble focusing on listening to lecturing academics, but Professor Cross was easy to understand and made his already interesting subject of study even more exciting to learn about.

The party's conversations were interrupted after a short while by a break in the treeline. Murum City became visible in the distance. Jeddy thought to himself that he may have made it "out of the woods" this time, but he had definitely learned his lesson about preparation. He thanked the professor again for his guidance. The young Pokebard could easily have met the end of his journey without having made such an unexpected ally.

"I'm gonna go nab Maestro a Pokeball from the mart before looking for a place to stay. I imagine you must be a very busy man. Please don't let me distract you, dude...uh.. Professor. Hopefully there's an inn I can afford. It might only cost one or two limbs." Jeddy laughed as he tried not to be disheartened by the region's exorbitant prices and his personal funding situation. "I'll just have to sprout some extra ones like that crazy Machamp that chased me." The professor acknowledged his errand and agreed to meet again later that evening over a meal. Both would need a place to lodge, so they were going to be on the lookout for the most affordable option. Jeddy put away his instrument and headed towards Murum's Pokemart.

As soon as the musician entered town, he could feel the stares on the back of his neck from the other trainers. They were sizing him up and scoffing at his potential. A young, skinny, long-haired dude with glasses and a bug Pokemon certainly wasn't the most threatening appearance. A few local battles that were raging along the city's edge indicated that this is where the strong preyed upon the weak. Jeddy witnessed the brutal sight of a Tauros gouging one of its massive horns into the side of a devastated Charmeleon. The fire Pokemon recoiled in bloodied agony from its wound before becoming trampled by a follow-up stomp. The Charmeleon's trainer intervened to save the Pokemon from further harm while the opponent laughed maniacally. The victor laid claim over a large amount of prize money as the victor laid over his fallen companion in tears. Jeddy gritted his teeth. It was an injustice he'd have to write about another day. Those type of people would hurt anyone or anything for money.

Jeddy found the mart and paid the excessive 400p price for Maestro's Pokeball. The little bug chirped happily as his body was converted into a reddish light and absorbed into the orb. An instant clicking noise signaled that the Kricketot now had a home of his own with Jeddy. He'd need more Pokeballs for his journey, but he'd have to earn some more cash first. He asked one of the clerks for the location of the cheapest lodging, and she pointed him towards the direction of an inn not too far away. Although she did so in an annoyed manner, Jeddy realized that she probably received that question quite often. He thanked her, anyway, and hurried to see if he could make an arrangement with the inn's proprietor.

The building that the mart clerk had indicated wasn't as grand as the delusions of architecture that Dolus tried to emulate to its new arrivals, but Murum wasn't a town of hovels either. The two-story cabin-like structure was warm and inviting. A sign with a massive bear Pokemon adorned the wall above the entrance. Jeddy walked up to a counter where an elderly receptionist stood to greet him.

"Welcome to Murum City's Ursaring Cave Lodge! My name is Telda. Can I help you, son?" The older woman was much nicer than the mart clerk Jeddy had previously encountered. Jeddy explained his situation, and she was thrilled to have a musician visit her establishment. They negotiated a deal where Jeddy could stay for free as long as he played for the other guests' entertainment. Apparently, business had been on the decline with an increase in trainer hunters preying on weaker new arrivals. "Many of the Fortis league challengers have been setting up shop in Murum to profit from exploiting novices", Telda explained. "Now most newcomers can't afford to invest in real shelter. I find people sleeping on park benches and in the woods all of the time. If you can draw a crowd with your music, I'll even feed you tonight. My husband and I started this lodge after we retired, but I've been struggling to bring in customers since he passed away. Edegar loved music, and I feel like he would want me to help you so that you can help me."

"Please, m'am. You had me at free meal." Jeddy whipped his lute out, placed its case open at the edge of the front porch, and began fulfilling his end of the bargain on his new stage. Music began spilling forth from the entrance of the Ursaring Cave Lodge, attracting the interest of common passersby. Before long, a cluster of roughly 40 people had gathered to witness the free live entertainment. Jeddy performed alongside Maestro for the better part of two hours. The duet persisted its excellence throughout the entire duration. The crowd applauded after each song. Each individual was equalized with one another while enjoying the music. Status and rank were alien themes that couldn't exist while one was possessed by Jeddy's melodies. The human-Pokemon collaboration of artistic expression was pure enough to silence even the most mouthy of hecklers. Among the captivated spectators was none other than Professor Cross. Jeddy beamed a righteous smile when he noticed his friend.

Sterling could no longer contain himself, and Jeddy called the Noibat for one final song before the show's end. The unexpected addition to the "band" was a smashing success with the audience. Sterling played the lowest harmonic frequencies to match his master's song selection. They closed with a rendition of "Payday" that Professor Cross had almost witnessed in its entirety earlier that day. The instrumental solos at the end of the song resolved with Sterling's own explosive contribution. A few pleased listeners put small monetary donations in Jeddy's lutecase. The trio took a bow at their exhibition's conclusion, and Jeddy urged the listeners to enjoy a meal and night at the Ursaring Cave Lodge. It wouldn't be long before the sun would begin setting.

The musician promised new songs and performances for the Lodge's patrons. His offered yielded several takers, and the group made their way inside the lodge. There wasn't much money from tips, but Jeddy graciously pocketed his donations. 250p was nothing to take lightly. That was almost another Pokeball. The true value of playing was the free meal and board he would receive from his elderly benefactor. He was happy to help someone else in need. Jeddy joined the lodge's new patrons. He could smell savory vapors escaping from the kitchens.

"Mama Bear! Got some visitors for the cave!"
