Writing Prompts: Writing Prompts: 15

RenzFlintrock "You're insane!"

"I know! Isn't it great?"
"You're insane!"

I stated more than observed, staring at the strange being before us. Its grey face looked like a mask, but the mouth moved as it spoke in a cackling voice.

"I know! Isn't it great?"

I stared at the strange being, muscles tense and ready for action. Why had we ever taken the time to put the key back together? We knew that someone was in this cell, but whatever possessed us to take the time to open the door... and really, it was my fault. It was my curiosity that drove us to this point. Susie and Ralsei helped me, but it was my fault that the door was open and this deranged creature, who had to be here for some reason, was now able to get out. That is, if we didn't keep him there.

"Hey, hey, let's play a game!"

My thoughts were interrupted as the strange creature began to hop back and forth. As it moved, its neck stretched like an accordion, and I noticed Ralsei shiver at the horrid visual. I felt pretty shocked and queasy about it myself. I had seen a lot of weird things since I came to this land, but this was definitely up there. I glanced back and forth between my companions. Susie looked unimpressed, and Ralsei seemed a bit nervous. I knew I had to speak up.

"What kind of game?"

"Ueeh hee hee! Oh, simple, simple! A simple numbers game! When your HP drops to zero, you lose."

Susie snapped out her axe, just in time to counter a blow from a scythe that had appeared from nowhere in the creature's hands. Ralsei stumbled back a step, and I drew my sword and readied my shield. It was going to be a fight.

In the blink of an eye, the creature had spun away, and in the tail of his spin came glowing white projectiles, shaped like spades. One scraped Susie's arm, and both Ralsei and I had to dodge. I whipped my shield up, ready to block the next attack. Ralsei and I both knew to get the measure of our opponent, to wait for an opening. But Susie rushed in recklessly. She led with her axe swinging, and she actually scored a hit. The creature went skipping backwards, and his neck bungeed out again. He seemed unphased by the hit, and skidded to a halt. In the air all around us, small cubes appeared. They began to flash, and I knew something was coming. And then, with a bang, they burst and heartshaped blades, also made of glowing white energy, shot out in all directions. Several thudded into my upraised shield, but then I realized. They weren't flying out like regular shrapnel from a bomb, they were spinning like a whirlwind. One scraped my back, and I fell to the ground, a cry of pain escaping my lips. I heard Ralsei call out my name, and a growl from Susie. And then everything went black.
