Writing Prompts: Writing Prompts: 12

by RenzFlintrock

RenzFlintrock Today's prompt is:

"How dare you! I... I trusted you!"

"Sweet, naive little girl. Trust is for children. You, my dear, are a soldier."
"How dare you! I... I trusted you!"

Reesa's voice cracked with stress and pain as she backed away. The pain of the crossbow bolt in her leg made every step so painful, but she had to scramble backwards so she wouldn't be hit by more projectiles. The proof of the concealed crossbowmen's prowess showed in the two young men she had brought in, lying in pools of their own blood on the ground. Her gaze drifted down to them and then back to Eppok, standing behind the crate just as before. He gave a dry chuckle, and his cold eyes burrowed into her.

"Sweet, naive little Reesa... Trust is for children. You, my dear, are a soldier, a pawn. Unimportant, in a word. You did the job, and I have no further need of you. If these two," He gestured down to the dead men on the floor, "told you anything, your life is also forfeit. And if they told you anything, you would deny that they did. So you have to go. To be fair, you can keep the promised gold. Here."

He placed a bag on the crate, directly in front of him.

"Much good may it do you."

With that he raised his hand in a dismissive gesture, and with that signal one of the concealed crossbowmen stepped from the shadows. He brought his weapon to bear on Reesa, and she closed her eyes. Even without her injured leg, it would be near impossible to avoid the hit.
