Short Stories: Winter Is Coming, Watch Out

by Shikowara

Shikowara "College is like looking both ways when crossing the street...and then getting hit by a plane!" - Anonymous.

My story is about a couple of college students. One falls in love, one almost runs another over, and the other is the one who is always there.
"I'd be careful if I were you." Said Kyle as Seamus put on his coat.

"Why is that?" Seamus asked, now grabbing his scarf.

"It's almost winter, which means slipperiness, snowball fights--" But Seamus didn't hear the rest. He had gone outside, thinking Kyle's reasons were silly. He was just going out to the store because Kyle had stayed up late the previous night, studying for the exams due soon...and had eating most of the food in the process.
Seamus, however, had already studied for the exams. He was well prepared and wasn't nervous...okay, that a lie. He was very nervous.
He took out his headphones, plugged them into his phone, and started looking through his playlist. Kyle had messed with it a few days ago, so he could never find the songs he wanted anymore.
He looked up as he grew closer to the crosswalk, then looked down again, forgetting about how people should look where they were going.
As he crossed started crossing the street, the traffic light turned green, signalling the cars to go. A car started coming straight for Seamus, who was completing unaware because of his music. The person in the car honked loudly, growing nearer and nearer. He heard the honking a second before it the person stopped the car, which was inches from hitting him.
Seamus stood there in shock. He looked up at the driver, she looked very releaved. He quickly walked to the other side of the street, breathing heavily. He shook his head. His nerves were getting to him.

Later, Seamus came back to the apartment to find Kyle sitting on the couch, clicking through the channels on the TV beacuse they could not afford cable.

"Did you get pizza?" Asked Kyle, looking away from the TV.

"From the store?" Seamus set the groceries down on the kitchen counter.

"I asked you to get a pizza for tonight."

"I-I don't remember that." Kyle rolled his eyes and turned back to the TV.

"You seem a little out of it these days, Seamus," He told his friend. "Yesterday you slept in, the day before that you didn't eat breakfast, the day before that you forgot your homework. You okay?"
The truth was, he didn't know. He was so nervous about the exams that he had studied several times that week.

"Yeah, totally, I'm fine." He leaned on the counter, forcing a smile to appear on his face.

"Liar. Come on, tell me what happened." Kyle patted the spot next to him. Seamus came over and sat down, now frowning.

"I'm just really nervous--"

"About the exam? Ha, I'm the one who should be nervous..." But, seeing the sadness on his roommate's face, he stopped.

"I almost got run over by a car! That's how nervous and distracted I am. I'm such an idiot." Kyle patted his back.

"How about you just go to bed? How does that sound?" Seamus sighed.

"Alright, I'll go to bed." At this, he got up and headed to his bedroom.

The next morning, Seamus was well rested and got up on time.
He and Kyle walked to school and into class. As they sat down, Seamus saw someone that made him quickly look away.

"Ooh, is that your crush?" Whispered Kyle.

"No, you idiot! That's the girl that almost ran me over! I didn't know she came to this university," He peered over his shoulder to get a glimpse at the girl again, but she was sitting right next to him. This made him jump slightly.
The girl looked over. Her eyes widened and gasped.

"Are you the guy I almost ran over yesterday? I am so sorry!" She bowed. She was obviously Asian. She certainly looked Asian.

"Uh, no, it-its my fault. I was looking where I was going." But before they could say anything else, the professor came in.

Later, after the school day was over, Seamus and Kyle walked out of the building.

"Kyle, I think you were right." Seamus said, suddenly.

"That's the first." He joked.

"I mean about the crush thing..."

"Told ya...wait, what?"

On the first day of December, Seamus plucked up the courage and asked the girl, Hannah, if she wanted to go out. She blushed a lot and stuttered a yes. The date was okay, they went ice skating. Turns out, Seamus can't skate, but Hannah was a natural. They had fun though. Afterwards, they went out for dinner and Seamus forgot his wallet. Luckily, Hannah was nice enough to pay. He found out just how awkward he really was around girls.
On New Year's Eve, they had their first kiss at a party hosted by Hannah's friend.

"Told you to watch out for winter. It's more intense then you think." Kyle told him as they drove home from the party.

"Remember when we weren't friends?" Seamus asked, looking out the car window.

"Uh, no, not really." Kyle chuckled.

"Excatly."
