The 57th Hunger Games: The Tributes

by Mockingchu

Mockingchu All throughout the Districts of Panem, children from 12-18 years old gather for the Reaping.
NEPTUNE
Neptune Coson smiled as he sauntered into the Central Square. His blond hair was combed back neatly, coming to a point at the middle of his neck. His defined cheek bones seemed to shimmer in the afternoon sun. He was eighteen, and had entered his name into the Reaping countless times throughout the years. This year, he would surely be chosen. This year, he would win and be crowned gloriously. Then, when he returned to District 1, everyone would honor him as they did all the other victors.
Plaxum Copperflake, the Escort for District 1, took to the massive stage. His gold and silver hair stuck up like thorns, and his dark purple lips were curled into a smile. His face was a bright red, and his eyes boasted a shining yellow color.
"Hello Citizens of District 1," Plaxum said in a pointed tone, "I know you are all well enough educated on the history behind the Hunger Games, so why don't we go on ahead to reading the names?"
The crowd of children cheered. In District 1, it was an honor to represent your home in the Games. Everyone wanted to be picked. Many people had trained their whole life.
"Ahem. Ladies first, of course. Bria Alleven."
Neptune saw a sixteen year old smile, and stride up to the stage.
"And now for the gents. Rhuba Tinem."
Neptune immediately yelled, "I volunteer as tribute!"
He could see the other boys looking disappointed they had wanted to volunteer.
"Alrighty then. Rhuba, go on back. And you there- come here."
Neptune walked up on the stage, and bowed towards the crowd. They cheered.
"What's your name?" Plaxum asked.
"Neptune. Neptune Coson."

AMBER
Amber Silvercreek was standing on the the District 4 stage, next to Escort Juniper Tellewan and the male tribute Thatcher Tumblesay. Amber grinned, excited to have been chosen. She was 16, and ready to get into the arena. She was in District 4, so surely she'd ally with other careers. She'd trained her whole life for this moment. She gave Thatcher a long stare.
Thatcher was tall and lean. He had pale skin, probably from being so deep underwater all of the time. But his body was all muscle. He was the fastest swimmer in District 4, but wasn't too handy with any of the fishing equipment that was provided. So even being a fast swimmer, he was nowhere near the best fisher.
Amber was a good fisher. She wove fishing nets while she wasn't training with her father behind their average sized house. There, her father would help her throw knives with deadly accuracy, and help her put her net making skills to good use. Knowing all about knots, Amber was able to rig a trap that would hold victims upside down as the rope wrapped around their ankle.
After a few quick goodbyes, Amber stepped on the train that was headed towards the Capitol, along with Thatcher, Juniper, and her mentors Graham and Wren.

SPECK
Speck Leospald sat at a large dining table on the train headed for the Capitol. His mentors and escort had gone into another room. He twiddled his thumbs, nervously. He figured he was ready enough for the games. After all, he could scrap together a Shock Grenade with almost nothing. He was from District 5. But were the other Tributes even more ready? He glanced across the table at Halle. She had dark, glossy skin with olive green eyes. He figured she was nervous as well.
"Halle?" Speck asked in a shaky voice.
"Yeah Speck?"
"When we get there... What do we do?"
"What do you mean?" Halle asked.
"I'm nervous about meeting the other Tributes," Speck admitted, "What if they're more prepared than us?"
"Then we stick together, and show them we're not a pair to mess with."

GRIFFIN
Griffin Apolik pressed his face against the window of the train. The world outside the train shot by. He had always felt a need to go quickly. To pass by others with such quick speed. His father had built this train. And it was that that inspired Griffin to move quickly. And for the Hunger Games, it was no different. He would have to move quickly. Shut out the competition. And win for District 6. He knew he could. He was faster than most adults when he ran. He could bolt into the Cornucopia and get enough supplies to beat all the other Tributes. He turned around to see Hannah, the female tribute from District 6, shivering.
"You good H?" Griffin asked.
"Y-Yeah," Hannah nodded.
"Nervous?"
Hannah nodded again. Griffin understood. Hannah was a bit overweight, and not the best at anything that required physical activity. She was always buried in construction manuals. At least Griffin wouldn't be the one who had to kill her.

JACINTH
Jacinth Spade nervously ate a slice of ham. She was off to the Capitol, and would compete in the 57th Annual Hunger Games. She had no shot of winning. She was sure of it. She knew about trees, and that was all. Back in District 7, all she could do was identify which tree was which. She knew what animals tended to inhabit them as well. But what good would identifying an oak tree from a maple do in the Hunger Games. The male tribute sitting across the table from her, Rantipo, had a shot at winning. His arms were burly from taking down massive trees. He could also throw axes with unparalleled accuracy. Rantipo had dark skin, like the bark of an elm tree. He had large, gray, marble like eyes. He was beautiful. Jacinth sat at the table, thinking of how hideous she must look compared to him. She was a petite figure, with messy hair the color of redwood bark. Her eyes were a weird shade of green, which Jacinth thought looked like vomit.
"Jac," Rantipo said in a smooth, deep voice. His call brought her focus back.
"What?"
"What'cha thinking about?" Rantipo asked.
"Everything that's ahead of us."

MEG
Meg Underpath took a large bite out of the pile of steak chunks on her plate. She loved beef. It came from her home District, District 10. Isaac Bronnich also dug into the steak on his plate, happy to have a large meal. They were both a bit stressed. The Hunger Games were dangerous. But Meg had been working as an apprentice butcher before the Reaping. How different could chopping up humans be from chopping up cows?
"So Meg," Isaac began, still chewing his steak, "Why'd you vonteer?"
Meg figured Isaac had meant to say "volunteer", but the steak crowding his mouth distorted the word.
"Shaya was my best friend," Meg admitted, "I couldn't let her go to the arena. Only one person comes out."
"Right," Isaac nodded, giving Meg a cautious look.
After a few hours, Meg and Isaac saw the massive, gleaming Capitol. They were almost there. And they might never come back.

AUTHOR'S NOTE: This is the first chapter in what I hope to be a great story! This look at the 57th Hunger Games (one that isn't mentioned in the canonical books) offers the perspective of six different tributes. Those who believe they can win, and those who fear they will die in that arena. This chapter was short because I just wanted a starting point to introduce the tributes that this series will be focusing on. I hope you enjoy what's to come!
