The Story of Duncan and Marowak

by Krisseon

Krisseon A short story of two best friends who share a life of pain, loneliness, and finally victory; together.
Duncan grew up in an orphanage, surrounded by ruthless kids and adults that didn't give him the proper care a growing boy needed. He became very distant from those around him and preferred being alone instead of playing with the other kids, who would just bully him anyway. He was in and out of a few foster homes, but in the end he didn't want anything to do with any makeshift parents, and they obviously felt the same way. So he'd end up in the same old orphanage. When he turned 10 he decided he'd had enough of the place and ran away. He lived from city to city, begging on the streets and stealing what food he could to survive.

One day, walking along the woods, he came across a young Cubone, mourning for the loss of it's only friend in this world, his mother. This site brought up a heart-wrenching pain inside him he'd pushed down in his younger years. Pain of the abandonment of his own mother and the loneliness he had to endure all on his own. Letting his own lonely situation hit him full force, he sat down and cried out his frustrations with the young pokemon. They cried together for quite some time, until the tears slowly subsided, and they finally looked at one another.

The pain they saw in each other's eyes spoke of a stronger connection any words could manage. And from that day forward, they traveled on together in companionship, growing stronger and stronger every day.

On their journey, they encountered many wild and dangerous pokemon threatening their lives. They protected each other as best they could, battling for one another until they had a chance to escape or until the opponent gave up and ran off. But on one significant day, they decided to challenge themselves and race to the top of a mountain. On that mountain was a very aggressive and territorial Aggron. It blasted Duncan first, knocking him unconscious and leaving him defenseless. Cubone became more angry than he'd ever felt, using every attack he knew with all the power he could muster to chase the Aggron away. He rushed to his fallen friend. Duncan was severely hurt.

The panicked pokemon drug him to a small cave he thought they'd be safe in, sat there with him and protected him for days while he lay unconscious. In those days of not knowing if his best friend would survive or not, Cubone cried relentlessly, feeling just as helpless as he did when his mother had died.
On the third day, Duncan awoke, and the two friends embraced in happiness. Then, in that moment of intense gratitude, Cubone began to glow.

The timid Cubone let go of the pain of his loss, and evolved into a stronger, wiser Marowak. Though his appearance and temperament changed a little that day, the love of his best friend Duncan did not, and this transformation inspired Duncan to become a true pokemon trainer, ready to conquer whatever challenge he may face, so long as his best friend was at his side.

After he'd met with the well known Professor Oak, he gathered all his things to become a trainer, and went off to find the very pokemon that tormented him and Marowak on their travels, to take back their pride and prove how strong they'd both become.

Alongside Marowak, he caught his pokemon: Sanslash, Onix, Machamp, Rhyhorn, and finally the very Aggron that almost ended his life.

With his foes now turned faithful friends and his hero Marowak, these days he's collecting victories in the forms of badges in every Region of the pokemon world.
