The Lonely Duskull

by Pen-and-Parchment

Pen-and-Parchment Vera Boone's pokemon are like family to her, but how did she meet them all?
Deep within Eterna Forest laid the Old Chateau. Deep within the Old Chateau, two dusknoirs had met and mated. They laid an egg and left promptly. These two ghost types in particular weren't very good parents. After some time, the egg hatched into a duskull. The little ghost type was left to fend for itself, though the Old Chateau was a fairly easy place to survive, if you knew where to go for food and all.

Unfortunately, the infant duskull didn't know anything. He was unaware of the other pokemon in the manor and their specific haunting grounds. He didn't know where to find food, nor where to sleep. Oftentimes, he was attacked by haunters or ghastly or even gengars because he wandered into their territories by accident.

The baby ghost type was close to perishing by the time a little girl stumbled upon the manor. Her purple hair put back in pigtails, she wore a blue and green dress. Her shining silver eyes were impossible to look away from... At least, the duskull thought so. A strange ghost type was with her, safe in her arms. It looked content and as curious as the girl did. The purple-haired girl giggled as she skipped around the Old Chateau with the strange ghost pokemon that looked somewhat similar to the pikachus that occasionally wandered into the manor.

"This place is neat!~ So old and creepy and spooky!~" The girl giggled as she looked around curiously. He had seen plenty of humans and their pokemon come into the Old Chateau, but the baby duskull felt that this girl was different than the others. Sensing that difference - and strangely drawn to the girl’s curiosity and energy - the baby duskull weakly and slowly floated after her.

The girl turned after wandering around for a while and she saw the baby duskull floating behind her. Instead of running away scared or hurting the little guy, she knelt down and smiled at him. “Hiya, little guy…” The duskull shook a bit and backed up. He had never been this close to a human before… Even though he could tell that this girl was different - and much younger - than the other humans he had seen before, he was still worried that she might do something terrible to him. The girl just slowly held out her arms, the strange pokemon that was with her now perched on her shoulder. “You poor thing...you’re shaking! C’mere...I’ll help you…”

The duskull was surprised at her soft and gentle voice. He decided to trust the girl, and he slowly floated forwards into her arms. She scooped the baby up and slowly stood up. “We’ll go see Mommy and Daddy. They can help, too!” The girl turned to the entrance of the Old Chateau and started walking towards it. “My name is Vera, by the way.” The girl named Vera smiled at the duskull. The baby nuzzled her and smiled a bit as well. She was warm, and her arms were comfortable. No wonder why the other pokemon was in her arms before…!

They walked outside into the Eterna Forest and found two humans that looked similar to Vera, though they were lacking her purple hair and striking silver eyes. They gave Vera a blanket that she wrapped around the small ghost type, as well as plenty of food and medicine for him. Vera herself tended to the pokemon, always speaking softly to him and smiling at him. The baby pokemon began to see Vera as a mother figure, and quickly became attached to her. By the end of the day, Vera’s parents were calling for her to go with them back home. Not wanting to be left alone, the baby duskull refused to stay behind, so he accompanied the family back to Jubilife City.

Years passed, and Vera grew into a young woman. The duskull evolved into a dusklops, then a dusknoir. Named Grimsby, a “proper” name for a pokemon found in a manor, the dusknoir had become very protective of Vera over the years. He had become serious and no-nonsense, whereas Vera still seemed to have the same happy-go-lucky attitude that she had when she was a child.

The roles, it seemed, had shifted. Grimsby took care of Vera whenever she was away from home, which seemed to be nearly every day with her travels and all. Vera’s team grew to include more ghost types, but Grimsby always prided himself in knowing that he had been Vera’s second pokemon ever. Besides Hex the mimikyu, he had been with Vera the longest.

Grimsby cared for his trainer like the rest of Vera’s team did. But he also deeply respected her beyond that. She had cared for him for so long when he had no caregiver prior to her coming to the Old Chateau all those years ago… He wanted not only to keep her safe, but to repay her for her kindness. After all, it was the least he could do for his mother.
