The life and suffering of sir Sven

by Grand Master Koop

Grand Master Koop The backstory of one of my D&D characters that I thought was worth sharing, enjoy.
Sven grew up in a small and poor village named Inia, a village run by the elders who valued tradition and keeping the peace in the community. The young boy spent most of his days helping out inside his community with their day to day lives. Although living a very tranquil life, Sven had a rather fierce temper and a tendency for violence that got him in a lot of trouble during his youth.

However, everything changed when the village was visited by envoys of the rapidly expanding kingdom of Illuma, a kingdom that had established itself a ways away from the village not long ago. They announced their intent to colonize the land Inia was on to further the expansion of their kingdom. Perplexed by this sudden demand, the elders rightfully objected but were met with quick dismissal as the kingdom began their colonization plans anyways, thinking little of the people already living on the land.

After a long and harsh negotiation, the village managed to keep their independence from their colonizers and retain their old ways of life, but there was a catch. The terms they managed to agree on were that Inia can remain separate from the kingdom, but in exchange, the village must give Iluma 80% of their village’s earnings as well as a brutal tax at the end of each month. While this contract is clearly unfair and one sided, the village had no choice but to abide, hoping to at least hold their freedom a little bit longer before the inevitable end of their old lifestyle. This was made even more brutal by the fact that their trading connections became heavily restricted after Illumi’s takeover.

Outraged by the gall these strangers had to come to their lands and claim it as if it was theirs but knowing he is powerless to do anything about it, Sven decided to take his anger out in the fighting pit that was built not long after the forced take over. Due to his young age, the fight organizers didn't pay him any mind and assigned him a random opponent, thinking that he'll receive a beating, be taught a lesson and run off. Despite still being young, Sven discovered he had a real talent for beating the crap out of people. He won his first match easily, surprising everyone watching, especially the organizers who thought he was just a dumb kid.

Not long after his first victory, Sven continued to fight in the pit and began collecting victory after victory to the point he became a crowd favorite and undisputed king of the ring. He used the fortune he received by winning his fights to help out his poor village cope with the situation, the elders initially refused to take the money as it was from those who forced them into their present situation in the first place but they eventually agreed, begrudgingly, to take it as they didn't have much other choice to stay free from the kingdom’s influence.

After a few months and many more victories, Sven began thinking bigger. While the money he’s been earning through his fights are more than enough to sustain the economical side of his village from the brutal tax imposed by Ilumi, Sven started thinking what if he could make even more. It was then that an idea came to him, since the fighting pit is located on his homeland, why shouldn’t the owners of the ring be someone native to the land?

With this idea in mind, Sven walked into the office of the current owner of the pit one day and presented his demand. As expected, the man refused, even laughing at the idea that he would ever give away ownership of his business. So, Sven locked the door behind him and approached the man once again, this time with a more physical method to convince him. After many minutes and loud screams of anguish behind the closed doors, the owner emerged, brutally beaten and with only one thing to say: Sven is the new owner of the fighting pit.

With his new position at the head of the ring, Sven earned more money than he could have ever imagined. He used his newfound fortune to both preserve as well as even expand his village, making it a much more comfortable place to live in. The village has even received migrations from people who liked a more simple life.

A few years passed after Sven’s own forceful takeover, while his life is looking better than ever, a conspiracy began brewing amongst his subordinates. They were disgusted with the fact that the ring was being run by some nobody from the countryside instead of a more qualified nobleman. With this mentality, they planned to murder Sven to take back ownership of the fighting pit.

The conspirators called Sven out to the ring one morning under the pretense that there was someone who claims they will defeat him and claim his title. Not one to back down from such a bold claim, Sven made his way to the ring. Once out on the stage, Sven was a bit confused to find no one was there despite being told of a challenger waiting for him, that was when a dagger was driven into his side by the one who escorted him out. Quick to retaliate, Sven shoved his elbow into the man’s face, breaking his jaw and throwing him aside with the impact. As Sven recoiled in pain while holding his wound, he noticed many men walk out to the stage wielding weapons, all with the intent to kill.

Seeing that his ungrateful subordinates had set a trap for him, Sven readied himself for the fight ahead, not willing to simply let the bastards get their way. The battle was long, harsh and bloody but in the end, Sven brutally beat up every single one of his attackers and those he didn’t brutalise ran away in fear.

While emerging the victor, Sven has received multiple deadly wounds during the fight and knew his time was running out. Sven hurried to his office to write a letter detailing what had happened as well as his will indicating that all his fortune and the deed to the fighting pit is to be given to the inhabitants of Inia village after his death. With his remaining strength, Sven managed to make it to the outskirts of his hometown where he felt his legs finally give out. Unable to continue, Sven leaned back against a tree facing Inia. With the hope someone from his village would find his body and the will in his hand before anyone else did, Sven took one last look at the place he grew up before drawing his last breath, satisfied with what he was able to accomplish in life.
