The Joy of Fate
I bought a Pokémon game from this awesome website with heaps of Pokémon stuff on it. The website seemed kinda dodgy, but I was really into Pokémon, and I wasn't paying much attention. The game I got was "Pokémon Ruby". I was surprised that it came the same day as I ordered it, but I knew how fast things were those days.
When I booted my 3DS up, the game was not "Pokémon Ruby". A very pink title screen popped up, with Nurse Joy on it, and a big logo saying "Pokémon Joy". I was confused, but curious, so I started it. I had also read and heard about people getting second hand games or hacks, and it having a save file already there, so I was surprised that there weren't any.
The game started on a screen with text on it.
"Joys never become anything else than a nurse. Not a Pokémon Trainer, or a gym leader. Each Joy follows in their mother's footsteps, as they did with their mother, and so on. No Joy, in the history of Kanto, has become anything else than a nurse - But - You, playing as a young nurse Joy, are determined to make a difference."
The screen faded to black.
Then, a bright, colourful room popped up. There were two figures in the room. A mother and a little girl, who I assumed I was playing as.
They started to have a conversation.
(Player) "Mommy, when I grow up, I wanna be a Pokémon trainer!"
(Nurse Joy's Mother) "Oh, sweetie, you know that's not possible! All Joys have to be nurses, you know that!".
The screen faded to black again.
A text box popped up saying:
"A couple of years later"
The screen lit up with the same room, but the player had grown a little.
(Player) "Mother, please respect my decision."
(Nurse Joy's Mother) "Oh Joy! You're not talking about being a Pokémon trainer again? What did I say?!"
**The player lowered her head**
(Player) "All Joys become nurses, mother.."
(Nurse Joy's Mother) "Good. I will not hear another word about this nonsense. Am I clear, Joy?"
(Player) "Yes, mother."
Instead of the screen fading to black, it showed the player sneaking out of the house.
Another box with text showed up.
That night, young Joy snuck out of the house, and, determined to become a Pokémon Trainer, she made her way to Professor Oak's lab, where he kept the starter Pokémon.
There was a couple of seconds where the screen went blank, then, the screen showed the player opening the doors of the lab. The lights were on.
Professor Oak was sitting at his desk, probably analysing samples of Pokémon DNA, or something like that.
He turned around, and I swear I saw the game glitch out for a second. He said "Joy, what are you doing here? You know you're not allowed to come here."
The player replied with "Mother says I cannot become a trainer, although I have dreamed about it for so long. For TOO long."
Professor Oak's face changed. He has an angry look on his face now. "Joy! Never have I heard such nonsense! Come with me. I shall take you back to your mother, right now!"
The player replied "No."
Then, I heard a weird, distorted, glitchy sound, and my game crashed.
I looked up just in time to see a pink figure, reaching it's hands out towards me.
It barely touches me, but then, I get a weird, dreamy feeling. I woke up, assuming it was just a dream. But, I woke up.. standing at a counter..
I looked down at myself. I was wearing a Nurse Joy outfit.. And... I had pink hair - I had been sucked into the game, to replace the Joy that had somehow managed to change her fate!
