Short Stories: Sometimes the Birds Don't Fly

by Shikowara

Shikowara Another random short story~
"This is balogana! I can't believe we haven't won a game all week!" Exclaimed Charlie, sipping his chocolate frappe.

"You mean month," Corrected Jack as he plopped onto the couch, next to Charlie.

"Yikes," Replied Charlie.
Charlie, Jack, and their friends were on the Dustin Middle School baseball team. Like Charlie said, they hadn't won a game all week, I mean month.
Then, Wesley entered the room, holding a clipboard.

"Hey, guys, I have an idea. What if we--"

"Oh, don't even start," Said Blake. "Every time you say 'what if', it usually ends up being a horrible idea."

"They're not that horrible," Welsey mumbled, adjusting his glasses.

"Shut up, Blake. No one wants your opinion. Now, what was your idea, Wes?" Asked Becky. She rested her head on her hands, looking intrigued.

"What if we fire the coach?"

"FIRE THE COACH?!" The rest of the team exclaimed.

"That's brilliant!" Said Hank. "The coach is awful. If we get rid of him, get another, we'll be sure to win next week's game."

"But, but, we can't just fire him..." Added Callie. "Its not like we hired him. The principal has to."

"Exactly. We just need to convince her to fire him."

"It's a good plan, Wesley, but how are we gonna do it?" Tessa asked, who was sitting on the table.

"I haven't thought that far yet..." The others groaned at this.
Then, someone cleared their throat. Everyone fell silent and turned their attention to the teammate that hadn't talked the whole time, Fred.

"We could make it seem like Coach Jason is the 'bad guy'. Like he's being payed to make us do awful," He said, hood over his eyes. "Sometimes the Dustin Middle School Birds don't fly. But when we do, we fly high and out of reach from failure."
Fred never really talked much. But when he did, he said some of the smartest and inspiring things they had ever heard.

"Let's go, boys!" Exclaimed Jack, now standing on the sofa.

"And girls!" Corrected Becky.

"And girls..." He repeated.

"And don't stand on the sofa!" Jack's mom called from the other room.

By the next game, they had gotten Coach Jason fired and got a new coach, Nikki Henderson, the principal's sister. She was great. They won the game and everyone thanked Nikki, and Fred! And this was the first time they had ever seen him blush.
Sometimes the birds don't fly, but when they do, they fly high and out of reach from failure.
