Green Arrow: Eternal: S1E11: Crimson Midnight

by Mechanist Gamma

Mechanist Gamma Black Canary has been critically injured, but the superhero doctor Dr. Mid-Night should be able to help! Once Canary is alright, Green Arrow's investigation on home turf leads him to a strange conflict - an archer girl within Q-Core!
Pieter Cross was closing up shop for the night. His last patient had left half an hour ago, and he was finally finished with his duties. Everything had been cleaned and replaced, so he prepared to head home. Before he did, however, he checked his watch. Nothing new.
That was when he heard knocking on the front door.
Strange. Dr. Cross thought to himself. Someone at this time of night? Not a thief, surely?
The doctor decided there was no reason not to check it out. Walking towards the door, he opened it slightly to check who was there. When he saw the situation, he opened it wide.
“Thank god, Doctor… you’re still here.” Green Arrow said, kneeling in front of the door with Black Canary held in his arms.
“Come inside, quickly.” Dr. Cross replied, running inside the small house. Green Arrow stood up, following. “What’s the patient’s situation?”
“Unconscious, but convulsing. Some scumbag shoved a needle with a drug inside of it into her arm.” Green Arrow explained. “It’s called Vertigo. It causes intense pain in high dosages. Lethal if the dosage is high enough.”
“Any similarities to Venom?” Pieter asked.
“Not that I can tell. She’s not getting more muscular.” the archer replied.
“Then it’s likely some sort of derivative of Batch-5 or the Maru Virus.” the doctor reasoned. “Batch-5… ah, hell, if it really is that drug being used as a base for this “Vertigo”, then I didn’t finish what I thought I did.”
“I’m sorry… what do you mean by that?” the Arrow asked, stopping to take in what his doctor had just said. “You sound like you’re a superhero.”
Pieter laughed. “Well, actually…” Dr. Cross pressed a hidden switch on the side of a bookcase in his operation room, activated only by his fingerprint, which caused the bookcase to slide to the side - revealing a secret elevator. “No time to waste. Get inside.”
The bowman walked in, holding Black Canary tight, as Pieter pressed a button. The elevator closed, the bookcase returned to where it was and the three people descended. When they reached the bottom and the doors opened again, the archer was shocked to see a hidden room beneath the medical facility. One wall contained an assortment of gadgets, the other a bunch of medical tools, and on the far side a computer. In the middle was an operating table. But right next to the elevator door…
...was a glass container containing the suit of Doctor Mid-Nite.
“I am a superhero. Rather, a superhero doctor. You chose to come to the right person, Green Arrow.” Pieter said with a smile. “Put her on the table.”
Green Arrow put Black Canary down on the operating table, just as the doctor asked. Pieter quickly put on his costume, a process which took all of thirty seconds.
“Was putting on your costume really necessary?” Green Arrow asked.
“Yes. It helps me see better.” Dr. Mid-Nite explained, grabbing some tools. “Where was the entry point, again?”
“Right shoulder.” Green Arrow replied, pointing out the spot.
Mid-Nite took out a needle, filling it with some sort of liquid. “I’ll have to remember to thank Tyler next time I’m at his grave.” The doctor then put it into her other shoulder. The unconscious heroine groaned and convulsed a bit.
“What was that?” the archer asked.
“Basically a liquid megavitamin. Based off of the compound for Miraclo.” Mid-Nite explained. “The previous Doctor Mid-Nite was good friends with Hourman, and I even got a few visits with him early in my career.”
“Ah right, Hourman.” Green Arrow said, getting a bit sentimental. Hourman had been one of his heroes back when he was a kid. Hearing he had died had been quite a shock. Apparently the Miraclo formula had vanished completely. Apparently that was wrong, as Mid-Nite had something based off of it.
“The megavitamin should counter the drug, pushing it back out towards the entry point. Black Canary may have some trouble with her right arm for the next few days, but it’s the best solution I can get. I’ll also be taking a blood sample from Black Canary, just so I can try and get a pure sample of this Vertigo.” the doctor replied. “But she should be fine for now. I’ll keep an eye on her until I’m sure the Miraclo’s done its job.”
“Then that leaves me to take care of other matters.” Green Arrow said with a nod. “I’ll just take the elevator up.”
“Sure. But where are you headed?”
“Home base. I’ve got something to check out.” the archer stated. The answers I need… I’m sure they’re at Q-Core. If Arthur still has his laptop there, then that’s what I need!

“So you’re coming back here?” Naomi asked from the laptop.
“Yep. Should be there in just a few minutes.” Green Arrow replied.
“I’ll get the cargo elevator ready to bring you right up. Anything I can do here?”
“Make sure we don’t have any unwanted guests.” the archer stated.
“I can do that.” Naomi smirked. Henry had designed a program one time that automatically hacked into the wireless network for Q-Core’s security. Booting it up, Naomi used Henry’s computer - she had seen his password over Henry’s shoulder one time and he hadn’t changed it yet - to lock every entrance except the underground garage. From there, she decided to sweep some security cameras to check everywhere she could.

*click*
She turned around with a shock. The door she had just come through - the roof-side entrance - had just locked itself.
Curious.
Remembering the information she had been given, this seemed most strange to her. She had been led to believe that the wireless network for Q-Core’s security had yet to be used, and there were no automatic locks on the roof. Either that wasn’t true, or the locking wasn’t automatic.
And if it was the second one, then someone was trying to keep others out.
She knew she had to be quick. Slipping the USB drive out of her pocket, she quickly jogged down the stairs to the seventh floor. Before she reached the tenth, however, she noticed the security cameras. Carefully checking for blind spots, she snuck past each of them.

Green Arrow rode into the underground parking, seeing the cargo elevator. The original builders of the Q-Core had been smart enough to make a ramp to it, and the archer rode his bike into it just as the doors opened. Naomi closed them from her end and called the elevator up, bringing the bowman and his bike up to the sixth floor.
“Welcome back, Emerald Archer.” Naomi said officially with a joking laugh.
“Don’t mock the hype.” GA joked. “We got lockdown?”
“If we’re not alone then we’ve got some sort of stealth master.” Naomi replied. “But as far as I can tell, we’re alone.”
“Perfect. I’m headed to Arthur’s office.” Green Arrow said, hopping off the bike. “That computer had better still be there…”

Green Arrow ran up the stairs to the seventh floor, which was really just Arthur’s office. As soon as he made it onto flat ground, he threw the door open and ran in.
That was when he saw the girl at the computer.
Green Arrow quickly drew his bow and notched an arrow. “Who are you?!” he demanded.
“Someone that doesn’t have time to deal with you!” the girl replied, drawing her bow in much the same way. Now that the Arrow had a better chance to look at her, he saw some finer details - a head shorter than him, short black hair that went off to one side, white torso with grey straps, black tights, bright red belly scarf that had a large end going down to her knees… and a grey face mask, of course. Why would she not cover her face?
“You with the Vertigo drug cartel?” Green Arrow asked.
“In a sense. We work for the same people.” the mysterious archer replied. “Right now, I’ve been hired to get all the information on this computer. But what else? I’m afraid you’re not going to know.”
“Really now?” the Emerald Archer taunted.
“Really.” the girl said, turning her aim downwards and shooting the computer right in the middle of the keyboard. Green Arrow saw why - it was an incendiary arrow, already melting the hard drive.
“NO!” Green Arrow exclaimed in shock, shooting an arrow towards the girl. She ducked down in front of the desk, grabbing the USB connected to the computer before it was slagged as well. She then ran towards the window in the back, jumping out and falling below. Recognizing that the computer was toast, the Emerald Archer aimed out the window to try and break the girl’s fall - but it wasn’t necessary, as she had already deployed a wing suit and was gliding into the horizon.
Knowing she was already out of his range, Green Arrow dropped the bow and sighed.
Then he flipped the desk behind him.
“DAMN IT!”

Mad Ollie is spooky Ollie...
Yep, it's the big reveal I've been teasing for a while now - Pieter Cross, a seemingly insignificant character, is actually the modern-day Dr. Mid-Nite! Good to know superheroes have a trained medical professional they can turn to. And yes, the previous Dr. Mid-Nite did train the new one. I might actually explore that story in a one-shot after Season 1 of GA:E if you guys want me to.
And who's this mysterious archer that came in and stole the shit off of Arthur's computer? Well, let's call her the Crimson Archer for now. But those observant ones among you may be able to guess her identity~
