Misc. Writings: Quest of the Heart

by Mechanist Gamma

Mechanist Gamma Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! You're probs not gonna see it until the end, but this story is about Valentine's Day! It's also my present to my best friend, Emily.
Oh look, another world idea for a one-off story that I kinda want to turn into a fully-fledged series.
“Graaaaaargh! Go down already!”
The bounty hunter in the green-and-brown outfit growled, a large rope being used to herd the crazed beast forwards. One would think that tying a steel cord around the horns of a Crested Skullcrasher - basically a giant buffalo with large crystal horns and an exposed ribcage - would be enough to steer it where you wanted it. Apparently not, as CN was having quite the trouble with it. CN was using all his strength just to lead the beast where he wanted it to. Most of the Skullcrasher was bones and meat - the vital organs were all guarded by the ribcage, which was able to take punches from a Mountcrusher Cyclops. CN has gotten grazed by one of those hits and shattered his elbow. Needless to say, the Skullcrasher was tough. Which is why CN was glad he had been able to contact Trenton.
Kicking the beast in the back of the head, CN sent the Skullcrasher forwards and off a small hill. As the beast landed hard, CN leaped off the back to get to safety. As he landed, he threw his rope-kunai and wrapped it around the gate’s handle before slamming it closed.
“Now, Trenton!” he shouted.
“Right!” the researcher replied from the distance. Slamming his hand down on a small rune, the bigger identical rune lit up and crackled with electricity. They had set up the pen so that the beast would be locked inside the rune’s range by the cage. Pumping it with magical energy, Trenton caused the large rune to blast out electricity. The Crested Skullcrasher was heavily electrocuted, killing it within seconds.
As the beast tumbled to the ground, Trenton hopped down from the tree he had been in to go meet with CN. The two fist-bumped in celebration of their success.
“Thanks for this, Trenton.” CN said with a smile, walking into the pen. He took out his knife he used for harvesting materials, and began hacking away at the flesh of the Skullcrasher.
“No problem.” Trenton replied with a smile. “Why did you take out this monster specifically, anyways?”
“Wanted its horns.” CN answered, holding up the horn he had just cut off. “Plus, the contract for this was 3,000G. We’ll split the pay, of course.”
“What, only 3,000G? You downgrading your expectations?” Trenton asked with a chuckle.
“I care more about the loot than the cash right now.” CN replied. “You do know what tomorrow is, right?”
“Tomorrow… oh right, Valentine’s Day.” Trenton replied. “But it’s almost night. You gonna rest up?”
“No time!” CN replied, practically dancing with the horns in hand. “You can take the rest of the materials, Trenton! I’ve got some prey to chase down!”
“Uh, okay…?” Trenton asked, confused as CN ran off.

CN slowed his run to a walk as he arrived back at Midgard, one of the nine major monster-hunting facilities. He was lucky that the Crested Skullcrasher was that close to the base - the central command was likely to have what he needed next.
“Alright, so let’s check the list.” CN said to himself, pulling out a sheet of paper. “I’ve got the Crystal Horns of the Crested Skullcrasher, so I’ve still got to get the Singed Sapphire Leaves from the Oak Monolith Golem and a Shining Ruby from the Ruby-Masked Cyclops.” CN smiled as he put his list back in the sidequest section of his bag. As soon as he put it away, though, he saw a masked man wearing a black and red cloak looking around.
“Hey, is that Sismic?” CN wondered, recognising the mask of his longtime friend. “Hey! Sismic!”
The mage turned to look at CN in wonder. “Oh, hey CN. What’s up?”
“I’m currently on the hunt for a few different monsters. Need their materials.”
“Something for Sicily?”
“Eheh…” CN ruffled his hair before noticing that Sismic had something in his hand. A flower? “Hm… you got someone yourself?”
“Wha- NO!” Sismic replied. “Just… something I bought. What monsters are you looking for?”
“Well, I’m currently on the search for a Ruby-Masked Cyclops and a-” CN was about to mention the Oak Monolith Golem when he saw a poster of the monster on the wall with a 5,000G reward. He grabbed Sismic and the poster and ran over to the front desk. “We’ll take on this bounty.”
“And what’s your hunter registrations?” the secretary asked.
“CreeperNinja and SismicMasterBlade.” CN replied.
“Wait what?! What are we doing?!”
“And how are you going to get there?” the secretary continued.
“Through skyfall, of course!”
“WAIT WHAT?!”

A few hours later, Sismic and CN were standing in a jet as they soared towards the destination.
“You know I don’t like skyfall.”
“You’ve barely tried it whatsoever. It’s a learning experience!” CN replied with a smile.
“I’VE TRIED IT ENOUGH TO KNOW I DON’T LIKE IT!”
“Dropping in five.” the pilot said. CN smirked, making sure all his gear was secured. Sismic groaned. “Four. Three. Two. One. Happy landings.” The pilot pulled a switch, and the floor dropped out from underneath the two bounty hunters. Sismic let out a short-lived yell as he started falling uncontrollably. CN, meanwhile, rolled through the sky before pulling out his limbs into an X-shape and falling down at a controlled pace. Sismic started letting out bursts of fire to slow his descent Iron Man-style. When CN got down closer to the ground, he threw his legs out so he was falling feet-first. He landed hard, shaking off the impact. Meanwhile, Sismic landed a few meters away from him, finally letting go of his fire blast. All the grass where he had landed was completely gone.
“Nice landing.” CN said with a chuckle. Sismic glared at him.
“Let’s just find this damn walking tree already.”

A half-hour later, CN and Sismic both heard heavy pounding footsteps. They both hid behind large oaks, watching the large monolith walk by. It was mostly brown, but where there would normally be green there was blue with silver.
“That’s a monolith, alright.” CN said. “That coloring says everything.”
“I’ve got an idea!” Sismic said. He then walked out. “HEY, STUPID TREE! YOU’RE PATHETIC! I BET IF YOU HIT ME, IT’D BE LIKE A LOVE TAP!”
CN didn’t have time to tell Sismic how stupid of an idea it was before the tree punched him five feet into the ground.
“D-didn’t hurt!” the mage gasped out through pained breaths.
CN couldn’t hold back any longer. “Better strategy!” he shouted, dashing forwards and slamming into the golem with his shoulder. The golem moved back a few feet, giving CN some elbow room. “I’ll distract it while you build up a powerful blast of fire magic and burn it to cinders!”
“Alright!” Sismic said, giving a thumbs-up from the ground as he began to climb out.
The golem grabbed a nearby tree and hurled it at CN, who dodged before running around to the side. The monster then pounded the ground, sending a fissure through the ground. CN tripped over some of the uprooted rock, but used it to roll into a Whirling Blade move where he swung his sword around in a circle as he curled tightly. Landing on the ground, he glared at the wooden monster. The Oak Monolith Golem then threw two trees at CN, both large. They trapped him in a small area. The monster then created another fissure underneath CN, this one trapping everything below his hips in the ground. The monster walked up to punch him, but CN raised his sword up in defense - not against the punch, though.
No, in defense against the massive blast of fire Sismic was letting loose with a blood-curtling screech. Flames scorched the forest as the monster burnt into a shriveled corpse and fell to the ground. CN smiled as he lowered his sword, the attack over. He quickly pulled himself out of the ground.
Sismic groaned. He hadn’t been planning to use up that much magical energy in one fight. CN came over and patted him on the back. “Well, I guess that works.” he said. Walking over to the charred remains of the Oak Monolith Golem, he saw what he was looking for - the glinting formerly-blue-but-now-red Singed Sapphire Leaves. Grabbing them all, he shoved them into his sack. He waved to Sismic. “Well, I’m done here. I’m heading to Austri to see if I can’t get that final monster hunt done before morning.”
“Um…” Sismic pointed up to the sky. The sun was rising.
“...SHIT! I’ll see ya later, bud!” CN shouted, dashing off as fast as he could.
“Uh, bye.” Sismic said. He then turned towards the large area of forest he had just burned away.
“...the hell should I do with this?”

As CN ran into the city, he saw someone waving it over. It was Trenton, with his girlfriend Prudence.
“Hey, Trenton!” CN shouted, waving to his friend. “Haven’t seen you since yesterday night!”
“Oh hey, CN!” Trenton waved back. “Still running around?”
“Yep.” CN replied. “Next on my list is the Ruby-Masked Cyclops, but I haven’t seen one around…”
“I actually just found a mission for one!” Prudence piped up, and the two looked at her. “It’s over in the mission booth over there. I saw some kid looking at the mission as well.”
“Thanks!” CN replied with a smile, dashing off to the mission booth.

Entering the room that was practically identical to the one in Midgard, CN saw a kid - two or three years younger than him, he estimated - looking at the poster of a Ruby-Masked Cyclops. He was a Boomeranger, CN could tell, from the bladed check-shaped weapons on his back. Then he saw the symbol on the back of the kid’s jacket.
“Jason?” CN asked. The kid turned around, and CN could tell it really was Jason. “Hey! Haven’t seen you since the Cerberus attack!”
“CN! Man, it’s been forever!” Jason said with a smile. “I was actually just thinking of taking on this mission, but they’re saying it’s too hard for a “Rookie” like me.”
“You made it through the Dread Beholder mission. You’re hardly a rookie.” CN replied. “I’m A-class now, so they’ll let you go on the mission if I take you with me. Just watch your back. Normal Cyclops beams can burn through solid steel, and the Shining Ruby focuses and magnifies their destructive power.”
“But if we get the Ruby Mask off, it’s just a normal Cyclops!”
“Now you’re thinking like a Midgard Hunter!”

An hour later, CN was jumping off the side of an abandoned building onto the roof of another. As he grinded his shoes across the deteriorating shingles, he saw Jason’s boomerang fly across the street and strike the cyclops in the back. Jason had already engaged. He attacked from the back, which was a good idea, but he didn’t capitalize on the sneak attack. As the cyclops turned to face Jason, CN jumped off of the roof and held his sword downwards. He thrust his blade through the shoulder of the Ruby-Masked Cyclops, causing it pain. He pulled away as the eye started to charge up, running around to where Jason was.
“What’s the plan?” Jason asked, steadying his boomerangs.
The monster fired at the two, and CN pushed the two away from the blast.
“Keep him occupied, I’ll attack when I have the chance!” CN shouted, donning his trusty blade.
“Got it, boss!” Jason said, running around in circles around the Cyclops’ feet. The beast kept his eye focused on Jason as it charged up. CN scaled the building next to him like a spider spinning his web and landed on the roof. He jumped off the gutter and struck the Cyclops in the head before landing on the opposite roof. The Cyclops shook it off and looked at CN. A boomerang struck it in the head as Jason leaped to join CN.
“It has a huge blind-spot! We double team it and we’re golden!” Jason bounced.
CN nodded, and got in his fighting stance with his sword. Jason did a little cartwheel for style before sliding down the gutter and throwing the boomerang, loosening the Cyclops mask. It got angry, and CN jumped down slicing the gargantuan beast right across the chest. It barely made a dent. Jason and CN stood side by side. The beast was starting to get angry now. While it charged up, CN made a gesture to Jason. They nodded and Jason ran behind the Cyclops, throwing boomerangs into its back. It fired at Jason, but he jumped out of the way.
CN maneuvered out of the way and up the building, leaping towards the Cyclops’ face. They struck the monster’s neck, and the head swayed. The ruby mask fell off, and CN grabbed it on his way down. The cyclops came down too, collapsing in the street. Jason walked up to it and stabbed it in the eye with a boomerang. The cyclops let out one last scream of pain before it fell silent.
CN walked over to the defeated monster, the Ruby Mask in his hand. He removed the glowing gem from the center and tossed the rest of the ensemble to Jason.
“You don’t want this?” Jason asked.
“Nope.” CN replied. “Just the crystal is what I’m going after. Oh, and you can keep the bounty to yourself as well.”
“Really?! Thanks, CN!” Jason said with a smile and a wave.
CN waved back. He then looked up in the sky. “Say, I’ve never been good at sun-readings. What time is it?”
Jason looked up in the sky. “Oh, from the position of the sun, I’d say about… maybe 4 PM?”
“OH CRAP!” CN shouted. “I gotta go! I’ll chat with you later, Jason! Happy Valentine’s Day!” CN then made a mad dash towards Austri for the second time, but seemingly at twice the speed. He needed to grab a transport and be back home by five no matter what.

Sicily Armani Grazziani was having a rough day. She hadn’t seen CN since yesterday, and no one was able to find him. Not even Sismic knew where he was, and it was trouble enough finding him! At this point, Sicily was ready to crash for the night. So much for Valentine’s Day.
As she opened the door, she was shocked to see the lights were off. When she went over to one of the torches and lit it up, she saw a small red glow at the end of the main hall. Walking over, she went to see what it was.
That was when CN jumped out from the hallway and gave her a great big hug. She stifled a shout because she realized who it was.
“CN! Don’t scare me like that!” she said.
“I’m sorry, it’s just… I’ve missed you for the past day.” CN replied. Sicily instantly quieted, a large blush on her cheeks. “But I think it’ll be worth it.” CN let go of Sicily to turn on the two lights at the end of the hall, revealing what he had worked to create. It was a large red heart. The two reddish-purple horns formed the sides as a glowing ruby rested in the center, the space between filled with beautiful red crystal leaves.
“It’s… it’s beautiful.” Sicily stated, wide-eyed.
“I tried my best to make something that matches your beauty.” CN said with a smile, holding Sicily’s head towards him. “I didn’t even come close.”
CN and Sicily then pulled each other together for a kiss.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY, Y'ALL!
Special thanks to @Mewtwofan259 for helping me write this (specifically, he handled writing the Ruby-Masked Cyclops battle) and to @SismicFlareCharmander and @DopeLeafeon470 for guest-starring in this without knowing they were doing so!

What is this for!? It seems to have so much plot and depth to it already, but I don't have a freakin' clue on who these characters are and their setting (well, I got the setting just a bit. But you know, not the whole picture).

Great work! I want to read more! (Also #NotificationSquad)

@DopeLeafeon470 Well in this universe your character is a rookie when compared to the other more experienced hunters like CN and Sicily and Trenton and Sismic.
And BTW this is why I asked you about that "what class would you be" thing.
