before word stuff
hey a story called sun beam by the stream, or… sbbts for short. collab book with chocochipbrownie, with permission of course. enjoy!

Near a beach, a group of Pokémon were trying to convince their friend to return to the town.

On the forest past the shore were a Hoppip, Buizel, Inkay, and Mienfoo, still fussing over an Eevee.

“You sure you don’t want to come?” Grinning at the Eevee, the Hoppip was still trying to persuade her.

“I’m sure of it,” the normal type Pokémon replied, the Hoppip’s leaves drooping.

“Awe, plea-“ The grass type continued before a Buizel patted his back. “C’mon, leave Lichen alone. They do seem to like the beach, after all!”

Frowning, the Hoppip grumbled. “Well, we’re gonna come visit? Right? Right?”

“Of course we will!” The Buizel answered.

“You better,” said a Mienfoo, trying to sound as threatening as possible. The attempt received a giggle from the Eevee.

“Why, you-“ the stoat-like pokemon glared at her, flailing as the Buizel grabbed him.

“Now, now, it’s not the time to have arguments! Especially during goodbyes!” An Inkay muttered passive-aggressively, off to the side. Clearly she found this amusing.

“Fine,” the fighting-type Pokémon grunted. He rolled his eyes when the Inkay wasn’t looking.

The Buizel sighed. “Oh! Lichen, before we go, why not we have one final adventure?” He quietly said, trying to change the topic.

Lichen grinned. “Bevy, why did you think I was going to say no?”

“I didn’t think that at all,” Bevy chuckled nervously.

“Hm, what should we do before we say bye-bye?” asked the Mienfoo, whom Bevy still had in his grip.

The water type looked at the Mienfoo. “Well, let's see here… what is the one thing we all enjoy?”

“Food!” Hoppip squealed.

“Well- I mean… you’re not wrong…” Bevy said inwardly. “Kalan?”

The fighting type looked up. “Food, yeah, sure, I was thinking of a casual battle to the death, but picnicking works too?”

“Well, a picnic it is!” announced Bevy. He was clearly ignoring the first part of Kalan’s statement.

The Hoppip cheered. “Sounds good to me!”

Lichen chuckled. “Well, what are we waiting for? To the market!”

.......

By the time the group had left the store, the Pokémon were carrying bags of berries and other foods.

“Don’t you think that’s a little too much?” The Inkay said, eyeing the baskets.

“Kappa, what are you saying? I think too little,” said the Hoppip.

Kappa rolled her eyes. “Miki, we spent a lot. We have a lot to go until we reach the town…”

That just made the Hoppip beam even more. “Hey! More food to bring along!”

“It’s perishab- oh, screw it,” sighed the psychic type.

“I have no problem eating food that’s just a tad bit rotten,” Miki said boldly.

“That’s... pretty gross,” winced Kappa in disgust.

Off to the side, Kalan sulked around after throwing a tantrum about how he was gonna have a fistfight with if Lichen wasn’t here.

“Listen, if Lichen didn’t want to go- look, we can just visit her next year, right?” Bevy tried to reason with the problematic Mienfoo, which Kalan seemed to ignore.

“I kinda like the sound of that idea, actually,” Miki said out of the blue. “It would our time spent with Lichen more valuable. Once a year, right?”

Kalan shot a death glare at the Hoppip and growled under his breath.

After the still quarreling Pokémon returned back to the beach, Kappa neatly placed down a piece of fabric and set around the pre-made food and paper plates.

On the shore were Kalan, Bevy, and Lichen, figuring out how to toast the berries and prepare some food for the others on the go.

“I don’t think this place has enough sticks for us to start a fire,” Lichen said as she held a handful of Oran Berries in her paw.

“I could punch that tree over there and get us some wood,” Kalan suggested. He gestured his arm towards a tall tree just outside of the beach area.

“Yeah... I don’t think that’s how it works,” Bevy said, stifling a laugh.

“What about the kelp?” Lichen suggested, before thinking. “Nah, it’ll take forever for the kelp to dry up, Sunny Day or not.”

”The only plausible reason I can think of are using grass or driftwood.” Bevy reasoned.

Kalan just rolled his eyes. “Blah, blah, blah, there are stones right there. Mine them and let’s hope we find coal.”

“That’s… still not how it works, but maybe we could rub stones together?” Bevy scoffed.

“That idea doesn’t sound bad, Bevy,” Lichen said to the Buizel. “Unlike Kalan’s plans.” She added in, loud enough for the Mienfoo to hear.

“Hey! I’m not that dumb!” Kalan groaned as Bevy giggled and walked over to the nearby stones lying in the sand.

“Sure does seem like it,” scoffed Lichen.

Flicking the stones between his paws, Bevy managed to get the smallest spark. With the Sunny Day from Lichen, and with a shard of sea glass that Kalan (grumpily) held, they managed to get a small fire going.

“It’s working!” Lichen whispered loudly. The fire glowed brightly, despite its size.

“I call dibs on the roasted berries,” Kalan proclaimed.

The two yet again ignored the Mienfoo as they started to spear some berries on a stick.

Looking at their bags of groceries, all three knew it was gonna take a pretty long while…

Meanwhile, Kappa, had a slow, if anything, peaceful go at setting up everything.

Well, as peaceful as it can be with Miki around.

“Hey, you done yet?” Miki exclaimed impatiently.

“Hold on, I’m still figuring out how to arrange the plates,” said the Inkay, who was currently holding paper plates in her two tentacles.

“This is gonna take forever! And I’m starving!” Kalan groaned, crossing his arms as he watched the Inkay slowly putting down plates.

“Hold on- we’re drying berries now. Just nearly done!” Lichen said, pushing the fruit down in a bag.

With time (and an impatient Mienfoo) they happened to get all the berries to be either roasted, dried, or cut.

“The food’s done,” Bevy told Miki and Kappa.

“Thank Arceus! I’m starving over here!” rejoiced the Hoppip. Miki floated over to the assortment of prepared berries.

Before long, all five had skewered berries, and seemingly resolved their quarreling.

Seemingly.

“So, what’s your plans for staying in this rustic, rural place, Lichen?” Kappa started, trying to bring up a conversation.

“Oh, uh, I’m still thinking about that.” Lichen looked down at their half-finished plate. “Well, I guess, you know, greeting the other Pokémon living here, learning about what’s food and whatnot, the usual.”

“What?!” Kalan barked, slamming his paws onto the ground. “You’re gonna leave our group going to a town just for living in this lonely place?”

“Hey, hey, Kalan.” Bevy rose his paws up, trying to calm down the Mienfoo. “Look, if Lichen wants to stay here, that’s perfectly fi-“

Kalan shot a death glare at him.

“…oookkk.”

“I don’t mind loneliness all that much,” Lichen said as they took a bite of a roasted Pecha berry. “It doesn’t mean that I don’t like you guys or anything, I just prefer the beach over the town.”

Kalan sighed. “You’re gonna regret not coming with us,” he sneered.

Bevy, not wanting to provoke Kalan further, stayed silent.

With that, the only thing left was the group leaving and saying their goodbyes.

Miki ran over to join with Kappa nearby packing up. “Are you really pretty very sure you don’t wanna coommeeee?” He whined.

Lichen pretended not to listen.

“Come on, guys!” Kappa shouted, making her way to the train station. Kalan bounded closely behind.

Bevy spoke up. “Well, we’ll be going now… I guess.” The Hoppip nearby frowned, but didn’t protest as he followed the Inkay.

“But… I do gotta say this. We’ll return next year, Lichen!” The Buizel chirped.

“Bevy! We’re gonna leave you behind if you don’t get your a-“ Kappa quickly silenced Kalan.

The Buizel quickly started to run over, before turning back to Lichen. “I’ll be going now. See you next year?”

“Yeah.” The Eevee sighed before her frown turned to a smile.

“See you next year!”

.......

A Vaporeon swam up to the surface of the water, the moon shining on it. They were going to return this year. The water type was sure of it.

Lichen let go of the kelp holding them back, sighing.

Had it been a year already?
