Pokemon Chronicles: Book I (Kanto), Chapter I

by Gamefreak1996

Gamefreak1996 While 11-year-old Tyson Auburn was fond of his home in Vermillion City, he always wanted to be like the sailors he saw come and go. He wanted to explore new lands and have new adventures, despite his overprotective mother's refusal to let him even leave the city. Imagine, then, his surprise when Professor Oak invites him to an opportunity he cannot miss. Now he and two other new trainers, Seth Cobalt and Lanie Pine, set off on their very own Pokemon journey!
The ocean waves were always the first thing to reach Tyson's ears whenever he woke up in the morning, then came the scent of the ocean, a salty, but also refreshing aroma. Groaning as he tossed about in bed, he tried hiding his head under his blanket to keep the sun out of his eyes. Before he could drift back off to sleep, however, there was a loud knock on his door. "Tyson! Time to get up!" his mother, Mrs. Auburn, called from the other side. When he didn't respond, he heard her let out a sigh. "Don't make me get Persian. You know I will."

"Alright, alright!" He shouted groggily. "I'm up." From the other side of the door, he heard his mom giggle, annoying him even more.

"That's more like it. Now get dressed, honey. We got some shopping to do before we start today's lessons." His mother said. Then, he heard her head back downstairs.

Once Tyson was all dressed, he made his way downstairs where his mother was waiting with his breakfast. Taking a seat, he began to dig in when he felt a head nuzzle his leg, accompanied by a familiar purr. "What, trying to steal my breakfast? As if you waking me up by pouncing on me every other day wasn't bad enough." he joked as he placed a hand on Persian's head. the big cat seemed to enjoy the attention, but still kept his eyes on the plate. "Not a chance, Persian." Tyson said, quickly scoffing down his eggs. Mrs. Auburn laughed a bit as she watched the two of them, recalling how Tyson had brought him in as an injured meowth. It had been a member of the family ever since. Speaking of...

"Oh! That reminds me. Your father called earlier, and says he'll be back home tonight." She told Tyson, who reacted with wide-eyed delight. "So if you behave I'll make your favorite for dinner: Oran pasta.

"Yeah, sure! I promise I'll be on my best behavior!" Tyson swore.

Once breakfast was concluded, Tyson followed his mother around the marketplace while she picked up some supplies they needed, all the while thinking of his dad. He couldn't wait to hear about the people he's met and and the places he's seen on his latest expedition in the Johto region. He had always admired his archaeologist father, and aspired to be like him some day; exploring uncharted territories and discovering new secrets. But instead, here he was, the same city with the same faces every single day. As he looked up, he noticed he wasn't at the marketplace anymore, but rather, the harbor. Wow, I must've really been lost in my own head... He thought to himself.

"Are you lost, young man?" A voice suddenly asked him from behind, startling Tyson as he spun around and lost his balance. "Whoa! Easy there!" the speaker called out, grabbing Tyson's arm and pulling him in before he fell into the water. "My apologies. I didn't want to frighten you." It was an old-looking man, seeming in around his late sixties or early seventies, with light green hair and a gently wrinkled face. He wore a simple blue collared shirt and khakies

"It's alright, no harm done..." Tyson replied, collecting his nerves. He then looked at the old man a bit closer. "Wait, you look familiar... I could've sworn I've seen you before." he muttered.

"That's not unlikely. I'm quite famous, if I do say so myself!" The old man laughed. "My name is Samuel Oak. It's nice to meet you."

"Wait wait wait...Samuel Oak? As in Professor Oak?!" Tyson asked, eyes widening. "The same from Pallet Town, known to give Pokemon to upcoming trainers?!"

"The same, yes." Professor Oak chuckled. Tyson opened his mouth again to speak, but the Professor already knew from the look on his face, and his reaction to his identity, what he was about to ask. "No, I'm afraid I can't give you one. I don't even have a Pokemon on me right now." he interrupted. Tyson looked a bit down-hearted at this. "Now now, you didn't let me finish, lad. Perhaps if you visit my laboratory in Pallet Town this coming Friday... yes, you do seem like a pr-"

"Tyson Auburn!" Came a shrill scream. Mrs. Auburn stomped up to the two of them, looking quite angry. "You weren't supposed to leave my side! Do you have even the slightest idea how worried I was when I turned around and realized you disappeared?!"

"S-sorry, Mom. I, uh, kinda lost focus and wound up wandering to the dock..." Tyson replied nervously. "But on the brighter side, I got to meet Professor Oak!" He gestured to the Pokemon Professor beside him. "Speaking of which, were you about to say something?" He asked, turning back to the professor.

"Yes, I was about to say you just might be a splendid candidate for recieving a Pokemon." Professor Oak answered. "Like I said, I don't have any on my person now, but come to my lab on Friday. I've already chosen two other candidates from Pallet Town, and I think it'd be nice to have a third for once. Just a little something to think about."

Tyson couldn't believe what he was hearing. It was almost like he was dreaming. Finally, he would recieve his very own Pokemon! Once he had it, he could go on the adventure he always dreamed about!

"I'm sorry, Professor, but no." Mrs. Auburn said, "You're just gonna have to stick with two."

"But Mom-!" Tyson began.

"But nothing, Tyson. I know what you're thinking. You think that just by having a Pokemon on your side, you can wander the world as you please?" Mrs. Auburn argued. "I know you're ambitious, and I know you want to see the world, but you're just not ready for this kind of thing yet!"

"I am too! I've taken care of Persian, haven't I?" Tyson pointed out, "And besides, you can't just keep me locked away in a glass box all my life!" Letting out a sigh to calm down, he looked back up to his mother. "I understand you're worried about me, but I'll be fine. Please... trust me." Mrs. Auburn didn't say a word in response, though the thoughts whirling around in her head were visible behind her eyes. Finally, she turned to the professor.

"We'll give it some thought." She stated.

"Good. Call me with your answer when you've sorted things out." Professor Oak replied, handing the mother a slip of paper. "I must be going now. Farewell for now." With that, he adjusted his suitcase in his grip and made his way off to the northern gate of the city, where a car was waiting to pick him up. Tyson watched after the vehicle as it drove off, hope filling his chest.

That evening, Tyson and Mrs. Auburn were quiet as they ate their dinner, leaving Mr. Auburn a bit confused. He was a handsome young man, with a bit of stubble on his chin, eyes shining with kindness, and messy brown hair. "So, what exactly did I miss that's making you two so quiet?" He asked, wanting the awkward silence to break.

"Well, you see, I met Professor Oak at the harbor today, and he offered to lend me a Pokemon if I come to his lab Friday." Tyson explained, "Mom's a bit reluctant about letting me go, though."

"Oh? And why's that?" Mr. Auburn questioned.

"Andrew, you already know the first thing he's gonna do when he gets his first Pokemon is leave on some wild adventure!" Mrs. Auburn pointed out, "I just don't want to see my son get himself hurt, or worse."

Another long silence filled the room as the family ate, broken only by the purrs of Persian as he nuzzled Tyson. "To be fair, getting into trouble is something that's inevitable in life, Ellen." Mr. Auburn pointed out, "Besides, Tyson's pretty good with Pokemon. I'm sure Persian's enough proof for that." Mrs. Auburn stood up, her chair clattering to the floor.

"Tyson, please go to your room." She said, "I need to talk with your father." Sensing what was about to happen, and not wanting to be around for it, Tyson quickly made his way out of the room.

The crescent moon shone down on Vermillion City as he got into his bed and looked out the window. Persian laid down beside him, seeming to understand the boy's stress. Even with the door closed, they could hear their arguing faintly. Eventually, things went quiet, and Mr. Auburn walked into the room. "So, I had a talk with your mother."

"Let me guess. You lost again." Tyson said with a grimace.

"Actually, I managed to convince her." his father replied.

"How?!" Tyson asked.

"I told her I have plenty of time to drop you off before my next voyage, and that if she won't support your dream, I will." Mr. Auburn chuckled, "Your mother might be a stubborn one, but then, so am I. How do you think we've kept this marriage together?"

"Point taken." Tyson sighed, letting a bit of silence fall between them. "Hey dad? Thanks." Mr. Auburn smiled, then got up, patted both Tyson and Persian on the head, then left.

Friday just couldn't arrive soon enough for Tyson, and it was a painful wait. Fortunately, his father made things a little more bearable by teaching him some tips and tricks for traveling, as well as the basics of Pokemon training and care. When the day finally came, Tyson filled his backpack with various snacks, tools and clothing and headed downstairs. His mother was sitting at the kitchen table petting Persian, looking quite upset while his father was making him breakfast. "Uh...you okay, Mom?" Tyson asked, getting her attention.

"Y-yes, dear." Mrs. Auburn sighed, "It's just...well, as your mother, I'm always going to worry about you. Now more than ever."

"Aw, Mom, I'll come back and visit. There's a gym here, so who knows? We might see each other again sooner than you'd think." Tyson said, hugging Mrs. Auburn. "And besides, you've got Persian to keep ya company." Saying that, he looked down to the first Pokemon he ever befriended. "Take care of her, okay?" he requested, getting a nod from the feline.

"Come on, Tyson. It's time to go." Mr. Auburn said, tossing him a breakfast sandwich to go. Tyson caught it, gave his mother one more hug, and took off after his father. In no time at all, they were cruising from the Vermillion City Harbor in his father's small boat. After a while, they turned out of the bay and onto Route 21.

"By the way, Dad, how come you always take cruise ships and ocean liners when you have your own boat?" Tyson asked, curious.

"Well, this isn't much of a long-distance boat, Tyson. It's better for shorter trips or fishing around the region than across-the-world voyages." His dad replied, steering the boat to avoid a collection of rocks. After a while, they began to reach their destination.

"Look! I can see Pallet Town!" Tyson shouted over the engine, pointing at the rooftops rising above the horizon. Mr. Auburn chuckled as he began slowing the boat down, bringing it to a stop at a small dock. Tyson quickly disembarked with his things while his dad tied the boat down, looking around. It was a small, rural town, with a few cobblestone streets here and there, but mostly wide open spaces and houses built on large fieldscapes like a countryside. "Excuse me, ma'am, do you know where Professor Oak's lab is?" he asked a passing woman.

"Ah, yes. it's to the left of the dock." The woman replied, pointing to the building.

"Thank you!" Tyson said, rushing toward the building. "Come on, Dad!"

"Slow down, Tyson! We're early." Mr. Auburn laughed. The two entered the lab and looked around.

"Ah, you're earlier than I expected." Professor Oak said, walking up to them. "It's nice to see you again...Huh, forgive me, but I don't believe I ever got your name."

"Tyson Auburn, reporting for duty, Professor!" Tyson said, "Thanks again for letting me have this chance! You have no idea how much I've always wanted this."

"I can take a guess." Professor Oak quipped, smiling at his enthusiasm. He then turned over to Mr. Auburn. "I presume you're Tyson's father?" Mr. Auburn nodded in response. "Nice to meet you."

"And you as well." Mr. Auburn replied, shaking the old professor's hand. Just then, the doors burst open, and into the lab tumbled a boy with orange spiky hair and a blue hoodie jacket and a girl with long light-green hair and a hat tumbled into the room, falling to the ground.

"Ha! I win!" The girl shouted, getting up.

"You wish, I beat you by a whole two feet!" The boy retorted.

"Competitive as ever, I see..." Professor Oak interjected with a deadpan look on his face. "Either way, glad you made it on time. Allow me to introduce you to Tyson Auburn. He'll be recieving a Pokemon along with the both of you."

"Ah, so this is the third wheel." The boy said, standing up. "Name's Seth Cobalt. Nice to meetcha."

"Hi there, I'm Lanie Pine." The girl said, smiling sweetly as she got to her feet and picked up her hat.

"Yeah, you too." Tyson replied.

The professor soon led the three of them to the back of the room, where three Pokeballs were waiting on a table. "These three are the Pokemon I will give you, one for each of you. In the ball to the left is Bulbasaur, the Grass-type Pokemon; in the center, Charmander, the Fire-type Pokemon; and on the right, Squirtle, the Water-Type Pokemon. What you choose is up to you."

"So, how do we determine who goes first?" Lanie asked. "Flip a coin? Rock-Paper-Sciscors?"

"That last one sounds more interesting." Seth replied, "Ready?" Lanie nodded.

"Rock, Paper, Scissors-"

"Mind if I take Charmander?" Tyson asked Professor Oak.

"Of course." Professor Oak said, handing him the Pokeball.

"HEY! YOU CAN'T JUST TAKE ONE WITHOUT OUR CONSENT!" Seth yelled angrily. "WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?! I wanted Charmander..."

"Er...sorry..." Tyson said, a bead of sweat rolling down the back of his head. "It's just that Auburn's a shade of red, a color most associated with fire, so I chose what I felt would fit me."

"No, no, it's fine, sorry I snapped..." Seth sighed, recovering his temper and smiling. "I'll just take Squirtle so I can kick your hide every time as compensation."

"Fine by me. Guess that means I get Bulbasaur!" Lanie said, picking up the last Pokeball on the table. "Better watch out, Seth." She teased, sticking her tongue out at him with a wink. Seth gave her a hostile look in response.

"Now then, moving along before you two get started again," Professor Oak said, stepping up to them. "Here are your Pokedexes, latest edition. You can use these to record data on Pokemon you've seen or caught. I'll also entrust you all with five other Pokeballs each, so you can start building up your teams." Handing them the supplies, Professor Oak took out a handkerchief to wipe away the sweat on his forehead. "Now then, why don't you meet your partners?"

"Alright, Squirtle, let's go!" Seth called, sending out his Pokemon. The capsule burst open with a ray of light, and a small turtle landed on his shoulder, with large eyes, blue skin, a long tail with a curl at the end, and a red shell. Seth patted his new Pokemon's head, making it smile.

"You too, Bulbasaur!" Lanie shouted, tossing her ball into the air. A small reptilian Pokemon with a plant bulb on his back formed at her feet, looking quite pleased with it's new trainer.

"Come on out, Charmander!" Tyson said, tossing his Pokeball into the air. Moments later, a small orange reptile with a flame on his tail stood before him. The Pokemon gave out a cry as it looked up to his new trainer. "Nice to meet you too, Charmander. From now on, we're partners!"

And thus began the journey of a lifetime for our three young heroes. Along the way, they'll encounter many different adventures, wonders, and Pokemon in the fabulous world they are about to explore.
