A woman walked through the peaceful town of Asperita, holding a paper sack with groceries inside. It was a beautiful autumn day, and she was planning to test out a new recipe and see how her son liked it. It couldn’t be worse than her attempt at making spinach casserole. That was a disaster.

But still, it was a beautiful day. The sun was shining down giving everything in it's a touch a warm feeling, which was counter balanced by the chilly fall air and a slight breeze could be found almost anywhere in the small town. As the woman walked along the paved path, she had walked along, countless times, a small ring got her attention, ripping her away from her daydreams out dinner and into the present. She placed the sack down at her feet, being dry gentle with it, and looked through her purse to locate the sound of the ringing. Within seconds she found her phone and accepted the call, pressing the device against her ear.

“Yes, hello. Who is this? Aurea Juniper! Wow, I haven't heard from you for a while. And you’re a professor now too huh? Like father like daughter. Uhuh. Yes he’s 16 years old. His birthday was last month. Wow! That sounds like a amazing opportunity! Okay, Bianca, in a big green hat. Got it!”

She moved the phone away from her ear, closed it, and put it back in her purse. After pushing the purse back onto her shoulder, she bent down and picked up the bag. Then she continued on her walk home, now humming an upbeat pleasant tone.

A boy with brown hair and a red visor who was her son she had mentioned, watched with a raised eyebrow through the front window. As soon as she came home, she told him he could head over to Hugh’s house to hang out, and play with his Snivy. The fact that his best friend had a Pokemon, and he didn’t, bugged him a bit. However, the boy, Blake knew he would get one of these days.

The front door swung open, and was loudly shut. Blake turned to see his mother holding the groceries. “Let me help,” Blake said, walking over and stretching his arms out to snatch the paper sack and take it to the kitchen.

“Actually, I have a question. Do you want a Pokemon?”

His mother’s words made Blake stop cold in his tracks. His own Pokemon? That was so cool. Was she actually considering getting him one? “Yes.” Blake’s reply was quick and straight to the point.

“Okay, do you know what a Pokedex is?”

Another odd question, but this intrigued Blake. The boy rattled his brain for what he could remember about Pokedexes. “Well, they are like electronic encyclopedia for Pokemon. And when you catch a Pokemon, to records data on it.”

“Now one more question? Do you want a Pokedex?”

This question caused the boy to get extremely excited. A Pokemon and a Pokedex. This seemed too good to be true. He stood there frozen for a moment, while he mother looked at him, waiting for an answer. “Yes.”

“Okay, well there is a girl with a big green hat named Bianca who will give you a Pokemon and a Pokedex. My old friend, Professor Juniper was looking for upcoming trainers to help her with her research.”

“Got it mom! Thanks!” Blake shouted as he bolted out the door. The boy was so full of energy he didn’t really think to slow down or look at his surroundings. So as he made a sharp turn, Blake collided with a dark haired boy with a Snivy on his shoulders.

Both boys flew backwards landing on their butts, and a little girl who was with the darker haired boy tried to help him up. “Hugh? Are you okay?” Hugh gave a grin to her as he stood up. His Snivy was quick to climb up his arm and take his position on his shoulder.

“Sorry Hugh.” Blake said standing up, brushing off some dust from his shorts. “Now guess what! I’m getting a Pokemon!” His voice jumped from casual speech to a shout. Blake gave a massive grin, and Hugh returned it with a smirk.

“That’s pretty sweet. That means I can finally have someone to battle with. There aren’t any serious trainers around here. It’ll be nice to have a trainer around with my kind of battle spirit.” Hugh’s eyes sparkled at the thought of tough battles. While Hugh was a year older than Blake, he was the closest boy in town to his age. So naturally they became best friends, and hung out a lot. “So where are you getting a Pokemon from? You gonna catch one up North?”

“No, there’s a lady with a big green hat who was going to give me one. The only problem is, is that I don’t know where she is.” Blake gave a shrug. “Aspertia isn’t that big. I bet I could find her after a bit of looking.”

“Blake. If you’re gonna be a Pokemon Trainer, you gotta promise me to take good care of your Pokemon.” Hugh’s little sister had been quiet while the boys talked, but now she had something to say.

Hugh gave a nod in agreement. Blake remembered what he had been told about that day, but shook it off. “I promise I will.” He flashed Hugh’s sister a grin and thumbs up.

This brightened her mood tremendously. “Then I guess I should tell you. I saw a woman wearing an orange hat, and a big poofy green hat wandering around like she was lost. But then she saw that sign for the lookout, and she went that way.”

Hugh gave a snap. “That actually makes a lot of sense. That’s the biggest attraction we have here in Aspertia until that Pokemon School get’s finished. You, head on home.” He said pointing to his little sister. “And let’s hurry up and get that Pokemon!”

The two boys ran towards the Aspertia City Lookout. The entire time, Blake’s heart was pounding. A Pokemon. He was actually getting a Pokemon! The boys made a sharp left and began to climb the stairs. “Okay, go on ahead. Get your pokemon.” Hugh said with a nod as they reached the bottom of the final set of stairs. Blake gave a nod, and made his way to the top.

“Wow, it’s so pretty. I can’t believe I’ve never been here before. It’s amazing.” A woman in an orange coat, said as she was overlooking the forest. Her palms were pressed against the railing and she was leaning forward.

Blake’s steps echoed as he got closer to her. She turned to face him and smiled. Blake noticed the big green hat and glasses. This had to be Bianca. “Don’t you agree? Hi, I’m Bianca and I’m an assistant Pokemon Professor for Professor Juniper. I’m actually looking for a boy who lives here in Apertia. Maybe you know him. Blake.”

Blake smiled sheepishly. Actually, that’s me. I’m Blake. Nice to meetcha.” The boy gave a wave, and Bianca gasped.

“Wow. You look exactly like I’ve heard. Nice to meet you Blake. Now I have a very important request for you. Professor Juniper has asked me, to ask you, to help us with our research. We want you help to help complete to Pokedex. Will you help us?”

Blake didn’t need any time to consider it. He knew what his answer was. The one that would allow him to meet new Pokemon. “Yes.” He said giving a nod, barely containing his excitement.

“Okay then. TaDa! Here are the Pokemon. One of them will be your partner.” She revealed a silver cylinder that she had kept under her arm. She pressed a button on the side, and it lifted up to reveal three Pokeballs with clear red tops. Inside, Blake saw his choices. A blue otter like Pokemon. A orange pig like Pokemon. And a green snake like one. It was a Snivy! Blake recognized it on account of Hugh’s Snivy. But of course he didn’t want to have the same Pokemon partner as Hugh. Then he would feel like a copy cat. He recognized the other two Pokemon as Tepig, the pig, and Oshawott, the otter. The Tepig looked pretty strong. Plus he would have a type advantage over Hugh’s Snivy, being a Fire Type. As he reached out to snatch the Pokemon, something caught his eye. The Oshawott was sticking his tongue out at the Tepig making him laugh. That was was pretty cool, a Pokemon with a sense of humor. And then, Blake made his decision.

“I choose you!” Blake shouted snatching the Pokeball of the Pokemon he chose, and releasing it. In a flash of light the Oshawott appeared at Blake’s feet.

“Ah, so you chose Oshawott. The Water Type. Here’s your Pokedex. Give it a go, and scan Oshawott.” Bianca handed Blake a rectangular red and black machine with a screen. He raised it to the Water Type and it activated, scanning the Pokemon.

“The scalchop on its stomach isn't just used for battle--it can be used to break open hard berries as well.” The Machine announced, in a somewhat oddly peppy robotic voice. “This Oshawott’s Nature is Adamant, and he is alert to sounds.”

As the machine shut off, Blake smiled. “Well I’ve heard of People nicknaming their Pokemon, so I’ll give it a try. And I decided this a long time ago. I knew I would name my first Pokemon Caesar. So, it’s nice to meet you Caesar!”
