Part 1: The Journey Begins!

by ThAtGuY101

ThAtGuY101 What's this? It's another written works series I thought I'd make. A Hunter X Hunter one. The written works series begins a good while before the anime begins, so I'm not sure if this is going to be a one off written work or a full on series. Not sure yet... Haven't decided yet. Though I'm leaning to the idea of making this several written works or more.

This episode begins with a young boy named Dolphus Engel. Dolphus is just about to embark on the journey of becoming... Wait for it... A HUNTER! *Roll the HunterXHunter theme song*
If you deciced to click on the story, Heres Dolphus.

Hunter type: Beast hunter
Family/pets: Derek(father), Dearg(older brother), Delmira(younger sister), Cocoa(pet eight-legged dog), Silver(pet speckled squirrel)
Backstory: Dolphus grew in in on a mountainside village next to a large mountainside by the ocean ,and next to a lush plains where all sorts of animals would roam. Dolphus seen many animals where he lived ,and would often enjoy writing about them in his journal. He would write any sort of description that would pop up in his head from the brightness of its skin/fur/feathers to the size ,and whether or not it was friendly/shy/aggressive. He wrote many descriptions in his journal. His father however was often times concerned with his son's going around all by himself. He was so concerned that he made Dolphus take self defense lessons from an old tai chi instructor so he wouldn't be completely helpless. Dolphus was a bit of a slow learner in tai chi ,but eventually progressed so far into the class he eventually that the instructor was proud of him enough to teach him jian(a chinese sword). He eventually became good enough with the jian enough so that he could use a metal sword ,but lacked the funds to buy a nice metal one. He was also happy enough to simply have the wooden one he had. Dolphus eventually became inspired to become a hunter when he met a hunter who was so amazing in his abilities inspired Dolphus to become a hunter. Dolphus's father was merely a merchant and didn't want his son going out on dangerous escapades. When Dolphus turned 18 he had finally worn down his father enough to let him finally go out and take on the hunter exam.

Weng's Jian: A brightly polished steel jian with a brass hilt. Carved in chinese on the hilt of the blade are two words, "Loyalty" and "dedication". On the pommel of the sword was a demon lion with a green ball in its mouth. The sword sits in a black scabbard with a plum blossom design that is mostly covered up as the scabbard was wrapped in a faded green saya cloth.

-Abilities-
Nen Type: manipulation
Nen condition: surgically replaces fingernails with metal one's as nen condition to strengthen abilities healing/destructiveness of his "happy hands" ability.
Nen Abilities: "happy hands"(cellular manipulation), If the user makes contact with someone he can rapidly control and accelerate the body's healing process (great if someone is wounded) or even attach limb if it has not been detached too long ,and the cells have died. He also cannot heal the dead or bring them back to life.
In addition to being able to accelerate the healing process he can also perform the opposite, and cause rapid deterioration.

"sticky hands(nen tether)", the user can create a tether between the user and an opponent. The user can use the tether to pull the opponent close to them pull themselves towards the opponent. However the problem with this ability is that the opponent can also pull the tether thus making it a double edged sword. the tether can be broken ,but the more nen used to strengthen the tether means the harder it is to break it.

"Happy line" Dolphus can manipulate cells to transfer from one body into another through the use of his sticky hands tether. Dolphus can transfer healthy or damaged cells from one person onto another and thus switch cells back and forth. Happy line can be accomplished without the use of sticky hands. So long as whatever two bodies transferring cells from one another are connected via nen.

Time to start the story! Which begins like any other!

*Cock-a-doodle-doo!* a small blue rooster let out. "Just a few more minutes" Dolphus muttered to himself. Once more the rooster let out a caw. A few more seconds later a small spotted squirrel climbed atop the boy's head, and began tapping his forehead. "Fine. Fine. I'm up. I'm up" Dolphus muttered once more before going back to sleep. after another attempt to wake him up, "Okay, okay!" Dolphus said. Eventually he did finally get up. As he did his squirrel made himself comfortable on Dolphus's shoulder.

The bunch of paws could be heard scuffling across hard wood floor. Pretty soon Dolphus was being attacked from a barrage of licks courtesy of his eight legged dog Cocoa. "Come on boy! I need to get up! I'm not about to let the others eat all the breakfast!" Dolan said trying to move the dog back. He got up and threw his shirt off, quickly changing into a new one for the day. He changed into his pants and socks, stumbling down the stairs in the process. He eventually ran to the kitchen, sliding across the kitchen floor. Nearly slamming into his older brother, but his father managed to catch him. Dolphus sat down, and immediately began pouring tons of food onto his plate. "Dolphus! Save some bacon for me!" Delmira shouted. "uh-huh! uh-huh!" Dolphus said as he scooped scrambled eggs onto his plate.

"Dolphus" His father commented. "Dolphus looked at his father briefly, then back at the biscuits to put another on his plate. He looked back at his father. Then at the gravy to pour some over his food. "Eh-hem!" His father went. "Your right dad! Don't worry! I won't be greedy!" Dolphus said.

"You said that last time, you idiot" Dearg said.
"And the time before that" Derek(their father) said.
"And the time before that!" Delmira said.
*Roof!* Cocoa barked in agreement.
*Squeeeaak!* Silver even agreed.
"And the time before that" Dearg said once more.
"Okay! This is all I'm gonna have. Promise! Sorry for being hungry, ya know..." Dolphus said.

True to his word this time, he didn't go overboard. Though he did take the last piece of bacon when nobody was looking. Though he didn't get to eat the bacon because Cocoa leaped up to the counter, snatching it from his hand. Everyone in the room at this point had caught onto Dolphus's deception and laughed at him for it. Even Dolphus laughed for a brief moment. Before he could leave the house, he put his shoes on, and grabbed his wooden jian from his bedroom. Before leaving for the boat, he wanted to say bye to his tai chi instructor. It would likely be a long time before he could possibly visit him. As he continued down his path, he could swore he smelled some more breakfast, but it was all gone. Almost all gone. Silver, his squirrel stored some food in Dolphus's pocket, and was munching away.

"Don't forget to write us!" Derek said.
"I'll remember!" Dolphus said.
"NO YOU WON'T!" all three of his family members yelled.
*ruff!* Cocoa barked in response to the sudden outburst.
"Yeah yeah!" Dolphus said.
"try not to get eaten by a foxbear or a noggin lugging tortoise" Dearg said.
"Try not to be a bum all week!" Dolphus said snickering as he walked off.

With a minor feeling of victory, Dolphus hurried on his journey before his brother could make a witty comeback. At this point the only thing left to do now was to visit his tai chi instructor Weng. Around this time, Weng would usually be as his home drinking herbal tea. However when Dolphus arrived at Weng's house, his wife was there to greet him. Her husband Weng wasn't. "You want to see Weng? he's out back training or something I think. I told me earlier but it must have slipped my mind again. He mentioned you, but I can't quite remember what" His wife said. "Dolphus listened, "Kay thanks!" Dolphus said waking around the house so he wouldn't have to take his shoes off.

Only problem was going to Weng's backyard was much easier since Weng's house was built on the side of a cliff. To reach the back yard. One must climb over the large hill that separated Weng's front and back yard. It was a pretty steep hillside too. Though Dolphus managed to limb over it several times before. It helped that trees grown along the side of the hill thus Dolphus could simply scale the trees and slide down the other side of the hill.

After reaching the top and sliding down the other side. Carefully using trees to avoid catching too much momentum on his way down. He eventually arrived at the bottom. Weng's training grounds was deep in a large tree filled area. Dolphus headed into the forest, "Of all times to be training, now?! I better hurry and say bye before I miss the boat!" Dolphus said. "He rushed into the forest, and began running to Weng's training grounds. Weng's training grounds was a decent sized area surrounded by trees on all sides. There were so many trees surrounding Weng's training area that the strangely never seemed to burn out. Weng used his nen to allow the fire to burn for far longer than it should normally last.

Weng was sitting in a meditative position. Dolphus's banter with his squirrel made it abundantly obvious he was there.

"It was I! Dolphus!" Dolphus said.
"No wait, IIIII am here!" Dolphus continued.
"No that one wasn't good either, Never fear! Dolphus is here!" Dolphus cheered.
*Squeak!* Silver went
"Nah... Lowkey, that's not a bad idea" Dolphus went once more
*Squeak?* Silver responded.
"Probably not" Dolphus replied.
"If you two are done yet, It would appear I won't be meditating this morning. About time you showed up. becoming a hunter is a serious commitment. No place for a childish chatterbox, I'm sure you understand that" Weng said.
"Of course!" Dolphus replied.
"very well. A sparing match before you go. You brought your sword with you didn't you?"
"chk! chk!" Dolphus went gesturing to his wooden sword.

Without hesitation Weng thrusted another sword that he had hidden in his long sleeve. Dolphus didn't have much time to respond. Quickly sidestepping the action, and barely securing the block. "You need to respond faster" Weng said before throwing a downwards feint which turned into a side kick. Dolphus blocked the strike but couldn't drop his sword fast enough for the kick thus lifted his own leg to avoid getting his in any major targets. Dolphus was pushed back, nearly falling to the ground.

After several minutes of defending himself Dolphus almost landed a blow, but Weng blocked it last second. "That's enough!" Weng said. "Your going to struggle in the hunters exam, but I'm confident if you try your hardest you'll do just fine" Weng said. "You mean it?" Dolphus said. "Don't question me. I know what I said is true" Weng said. Before Dolphus could turn to leave, Weng stopped him. "Before you go. I have something I'd like to give you. A gift that my father carried with him. For many years, I carried it with me as well. I'm getting old, and none of my children practice the arts anymore. I want you to one day train a student and pass this onto them when you feel they are ready" Weng said. "For real?" Dolphus asked. *Smack!* Weng smacked Dolphus with the scabbard of the sword, "I said don't question me, you know I'm right!" Weng snapped. "Yes sir! Thankyou sir!" Dolphus said accepting the sword.

The sword was a brightly polished steel jian. On the pommel of the sword was a demon lion with a green ball in its mouth. The sword sat in a black scabbard with plum blossom design that was mostly covered up as the scabbard was wrapped in a faded green saya cloth.

As Dolphus left, he also said bye to Weng's wife. Then headed home, and said bye to his family once more. Mostly just briefly stopping off to leave his wooden sword.

"You better hurry or you'll miss the boat!" Derek said.
"I know! I know!" Dolphus said.
"I bet you already missed it" Dearg said.
"Don't miss the boat!" Delmira yelled.
"No. Delmira, the boat isn't scheduled to arrive for another 30 minutes. He should still hurry if he wants to be there though" Dearg said.
"He'll be fine!" Derek said.

Once more Dolphus left. This time, hopefully he won't return for a long time. He headed to the docks, and the boat wasn't there.

"Where's the boat?! I missed it! NOOOOO!!!" Dolphus said.
"Calm down kid" a startled man said.
"You calm down!" Dophus responded.
"Now hang on a minute! Your the one yelling, ya snot nosed brat!" The man shouted.
"The boat hasn't got here yet, greenhorn. So sit your arse down, and don't make me say twice" A larger man with a grizzled voice said.
"When's the boat get here?!" Dolphus said.
"The boat gets here when you stop rushing pipsqueak" The large man said.
*Squeak?!* Silver went.
"You sit your fatass down, then I'll sit down" Dolphus said.
"You got a tongue on ya, ya little chicken shit!" The man said.
"Fight me!" Dolphus said.
"Hahahahahahaha!! I like this one! Now just where are you headed punk?" The large man said.
"Im gonna become a hunter!" Dolphus said.
"A hunter huh?" The large man asked.
"You got crap in your ears? I said a hunter" Dolphus remarked.
"You ain't gonna be jack shit with that attitude, but I guess if your gonna try. Knock your self out. Bet you piss yourself. Cry and run home to mama before you even reach the start of the exam piss ant" The large man said.
"Bet!" Dolphus said.
"Bet? Bet with what? That rat of yours or do you actually got money? Somehow I doubt that last part" The large man said.
*Squeak!" Silver angrily chirped.
"You leave Silver outta this! and wait till I become a hunter!" Dolphus said.
"Good for you kid" The man smiled before ending the conversation.
"Don't get on that boat. If your going to the hunter's exam. Take the boat over there. This boat isn't going anywhere near the hunter's exam this year. Those fools getting on this boat won't be taking the hunter's exam where that boat is going"
"For real? Thanks!" Dolphus said as he headed to the boat the large man gestured too. Just like that. Dolphus was now on his way towards the hunter's exam.
