A few hours later, the bell rang for the end of seventh period and I followed Nate out of the class and back to his house.
“Kara and Mikey couldn’t come today,” He said on the way. “Kara has choir practice on Wednesdays and Mikey has a track meet today.” He explained.
“Okay,” I say. “We can show what I found to them tomorrow.”
“Speaking of which, what did you actually find?” He asked once we got there.
“Oh, right,” I say pulling out my phone. “I took this photo earlier of what I found. It’s all hidden behind a bookshelf in the main office.” I said handing it to him.
“K, let’s see what you got here,“ he started before looking at the picture, at which point he seemed stunned. “That’s a picture of you.” He said pointing to a picture of two Noah’s in the same frame on the wall. “Two you’s. And that looks like a mask used to measure neurotransmitter levels in the mind to theoretically read the wearer’s mind and act upon that information to control any connected devices. That’s…. genius, but also pretty illegal and supposedly impossible, but then again, we are talking about interdimensional travel here…” He said before looking back at the photo, leaving my head spinning with his nerd talk. Nate was fluent in nerd talk.
“Wait,” he said suddenly, breaking me out of my thoughts. “That’s my necklace!” He said pointing to a gray-silver sunburst necklace sitting on the counter of the room in the picture. “How does he have that, and why would he want it?” He asked, looking at me.
I looked at him for a moment before answering. “Well, how he got it, I haven’t any idea. It’s not the one from my world, because it’s right here,” I say pulling my Nate’s necklace from my shirt. “Nate gave it to me to hold onto him while he went through ‘training’. Don’t ask.” I added. “But as for why he wants it, that’s simple.” I said. “It’s a flashdrive and an unlimited power source, didn’t you know that?”
“What?” He said blankly. “It’s a flashdrive and a battery?”
“Well, not exactly a battery, but for the most part, yes.” I answer. “That’s how I figured out about the room to begin with.” I said. “When I got here, there was a file on the flashdrive that wasn’t there back at home and I opened it and it was a map with pinging dots showing the locations of the necklaces for some reason. Here, let me show you.” I say, holding my hand out for his necklace.
“Uh… okay,” he said, relinquishing his necklace over to me. “
I held the necklace in my hand for a moment before asking. “Wait, do you have a computer I can plug this into?”
“Oh, yeah.” He replied. “It’s in my room in the house.” He said climbing down the tree house ladder and motioning for me to follow. I follow him into the house where his parents greeted me and I said hello back. We entered his room and I plugged in the flashdrive side into the computer and surprisingly, two different files came up, not just the map, but also a file entitled ‘Colstrom’s Plan’s’.
