Prologue: Two New Friends

“C’mon, Rhyhorn, we can do it! Just one more Rock Blast!” I encouraged my Pokemon. Soon after Papa and I moved into our new research center built right into the Diamond Caverns of Mount Moon, the same Rhyhorn I had freed from Team Rocket’s warehouse back in Saffron City had found its way to Pewter City.

Apparently, Rhyhorn took a shine to me when we first met, and was grateful for my rescuing it. It walked all the way to Pewter City to find me and ask me, in its own way, to be its trainer. Not that I speak Pokemon; that was Brock’s interpretation of what happened when Rhyhorn walked right into the Pokemon Center one day. It walked right up to Brock, too, and acted like it owned the place and had a good reason for being there.

Brock had called me on the phone to tell me about the not-so-little visitor. “Hey, Annie, you’ll never guess who’s at the center right now!” he chuckled.

“Who?” I asked, confused.

“Just come over, and I’ll show you!”

I rode Onix into town and ran straight into the Pokemon Center. I was shocked to see Rhyhorn lumbering around the lobby, big as you please, greeting all the trainers and their Pokemon that were there that day. “Is-is this the same Rhyhorn from Team Rocket Headquarters?” I asked Brock, incredulous.

“It would seem so,” Brock smirked.

Just then, Rhyhorn noticed my presence. It turned and thundered across the lobby toward me, then leaped up on me, knocking me to the floor.

“Hey!” I protested as Rhyhorn slurped at my face with its long, warm, pink tongue. Brock only laughed at us. I shot him a glare that was meant to say, “Not helping!”

After a minute or two, Rhyhorn slid off of me and allowed me to stand. “Yeah,” I half-sighed, half-giggled, wiping Rhyhorn slobber from my face. “It’s the same Rhyhorn.”

Rhyhorn allowed me to put it in a Pokeball, so now it’s officially part of my squad. That brings my total to two Pokemon, including Diamond Onix, of course. This day in the caverns, we were doing some training. At my command, Rhyhorn summoned four or five good-sized boulders and hurled them through the air. They hit the ground and shattered.

“Great job!” I cheered. Rhyhorn came bounding up to me and slurped its tongue all over my face. “Okay, okay, that’s enough!” I giggled, pushing Rhyhorn away from my face.

Suddenly, I spotted a wild Pokemon across the cavern. It was pink, chubby, and had large, pointy ears. “A Clefairy!” I gasped. Clefairy is a rare-ish Pokemon in most places, but if you lived in Mount Moon like I do, than you’d have a better chance to catch one.

Clefairy looked up, its eyes wide with curiosity. “Clef?” it asked.

Rhyhorn looked up at me and pawed at the ground. “Are you saying we should try to catch it?” I tried to guess at Rhyhorn’s thoughts. Rhyhorn nodded. “All right,” I began. “Let’s go!”

Brock told me that most people catch Pokemon by winning a battle with it first. However, I think we’ve established the fact that I am not most people. Therefore, Rhyhorn and I approached Clefairy, not to battle it, but to ask it if it wants to join us.

Clefairy eyed us warily as we neared it. “Hey, there, Clefairy,” I smiled. “We’re just doing some training. Want to join us?” I knelt down to get eye-to-eye with the Fairy Pokemon. Clefairy still looked like it didn’t trust us.”You don’t have to be afraid,” I assured it. “We just want to be your friends. I’m not gonna make you battle us if you don’t want to.”

“Clef. Clefairy!” Clefairy smiled and hopped up and down. It waved its hands back and forth, back in forth, in a rhythm.

“Hey!” I grinned. “You’re moving your hands in perfect timing, almost like a…. Oh, no! It’s Metronome! Rhyhorn, watch out!” I jumped back and away from Clefairy. With Metronome, you won’t know exactly what’ll happen until it happens.

“Clefaiiiiiiry!” Clefairy blasted fire from its hands towards Rhyhorn.

“It’s Flamethrower!” I gasped. “Rhyhorn, dodge it!” Rhyhorn leaped to the side to avoid the attack. I grinned. So Clefairy wanted to battle after all. This should be interesting. And fun. “Okay, Rhyhorn.” My turn to call an attack. “Use Rock Blast!” Rhyhorn shot a volley of boulders towards Clefairy.

After the dust from the shattering boulders cleared, I gasped. Clefairy looked like it hadn’t taken any damage at all! Then I noticed it. “Aw, no!” I groaned. “This time was Light Screen! That’s why Clefairy was unharmed. Hmmph.” I racked my brain for what to try next. “I know! Try Drill Run!”

This was a risky shot. Rhyhorn hadn’t had much practice using this move yet. I had no idea if it would work this time, but if it did, then perhaps Rhyhorn and I had a chance at winning. One thing I did know was that this Clefairy was strong, and I hoped with all my heart that I could impress it enough during our battle that it would want to join my team.

Rhyhorn stood up on its hind legs, and its body began to spin like a drill, hence the name Drill Run. It spun faster and faster until it became a blur. Then, like it whirlwind it spun right towards Clefairy. “Come on, Rhyhorn! You can do it!” I cheered it on like the good trainer I aspired to be.

“Clef?” Clefairy watched, shocked, as Rhyhorn spun faster than I had ever seen it spin! By the time Clefairy tried another attack, it was too late. Rhyhorn crashed into it at top speed, sending it flying across the cavern. “Clefairy!” It cried as it bounced off the cave floor.

“All right!” I cheered. “You did it, Rhyhorn!” Rhyhorn jumped up as if to lick me again. “Not time to celebrate quite yet, buddy,” I reminded my eager Spike Pokemon. “The battle’s not over quite yet.”

Clefairy leaped back up as if to try another attack. However, as it did, it began to wobble on its feet. “I think we may have weakened it,” I told Rhyhorn. I approached the now-tired Clefairy. “You’re pretty strong,” I smiled at it, patting its head. “Do you wanna keep going, or do you think you’re too tired to battle any more?”

“Clefairy!” Clefairy looked up at me, its eyes shining. Then, to my surprise, it reached for an empty Pokeball from my belt and handed it to me.

“Huh?” I looked at the Pokeball in my hand, confused. “Are-are you trying to tell me that you want me to catch you so you can be my Pokemon and train with me and my squad from now on?” Clefairy nodded happily. “All right, then,” I stood up, smiling. “Here goes.” I took a deep breath and stuck the tip of my tongue out one side of my mouth. This was my first time catching a Pokemon without Brock’s being there to talk me through every step of the way. And this was also the first time I had ever battled a Pokemon before catching it. Diamond Onix and Rhyhorn had just come to me.

I took a few steps back and raised my right hand, which held the Pokeball. I gave it a good toss towards Clefairy. “Go, Pokeball!” I cheered as the ball spun through the air. Then, it struck the curl on Clefairy’s forehead and bounced back into the air. Clefairy was enveloped in a flash of red light, which was then sucked into the ball. The Pokeball clattered to the ground and wobbled back and forth. I watched the ball move, not daring to breathe for suspense and anticipation. Then, the ball suddenly became still. The button flashed white and pinged. I gave a cheer as I plucked the ball from off the ground and proudly held it high. “All right!” I grinned at Rhyhorn. “I just caught Clefairy!”
