Chapter One: An Eventful Morning

I took a glance at my watch. “Aw, no!” I gasped, panicked. “I promised Brock I’d be in town by now to help him at the Pokehouse! We’re late, Rhyhorn! Super late!” Rhyhorn’s eyes widened, as if it too had just remembered. “We’d better get going, buddy. Return!” I pulled out Rhyhorn’s Pokeball and pressed the button, which sucked Rhyhorn inside with a flash of red light. I held one Pokeball in each hand and spoke to them. “I’ll let you out again once we reach the Harrisons,” I promised my Pokemon. Then I clipped the balls to my belt and reached for Onix’s Pokeball. “Onix, let’s go!” I summoned my Rock Snake Pokemon.

Onix gave a mighty roar as it sprang from the ball. Upon seeing me it lowered it's head down to my level and nudged me affectionately. “Hey, Onix,” I smiled as I reached up and rubbed its horn. “Can you give me a ride into town? I'm late meeting the Harrisons.” Onix picked me up by the back of my dress and flung me into the air. I landed in a sitting position on top its head, right behind its horn. I patted the side of its head. “Okay, here we go!”

I may have become comfortable around Onix, but I don't think I'll ever get used to the thrill if riding it! Just being up so high makes me feel like I'm on top of the world, like I'm flying! “Woohoo!” I cheered as Onix raced down the mountain at top speed. I clung to its horn so I wouldn't feel as if I was just about to fall off. I may trust Onix with my life, but that doesn't mean I can't try to be safe than sorry too.

As Onix and I rode into town, leaving a tremendous cloud of dust in our wake, I could only hope Brock didn’t think I had completely forgotten my promise. I turned onto the Harrison’s street, and from my vantage point, I could see over the top of the gym and into the Harrison’s yard. This day was a nice, warm, late summer day, and so all the grooming would take place outdoors. The large front doors of the Pokehouse were open to allow fresh air inside and all the Pokemon outside.

Onix skidded to a stop just in front of the gym. “Thanks a lot Onix,” I smiled as Onix lowered its head so I could climb down. I sprinted into the Harrisons’ back yard. “Sorry I’m late, guys,” I panted.

Brock looked up from polishing a Geodude. “No problem, Annie. Glad you could make it.”

“Annie!” The youngest eight of Brock’s siblings came rushing up and crowded around me. “You’re here!” “What took you so long?” “You want to help me brush Marshtomp?” “No, she’s gonna help me polish Gollem!” “Has Brock asked you yet?”

I ignored that last remark, which was the usual question for the kids to ask me whenever I come to visit. The little ones have it in their mind that I’m gonna marry their oldest brother, with whom I am madly in love, and who is madly in love with me. I may like Brock, hey, I may even like him, but I don’t think we’re anything more than good friends.

“I’ll show you just what kept me from coming sooner!” I pulled out Clefairy’s Pokeball.

“Did you catch a new Pokemon today?” Timmy asked.

“I sure did!” With a grin, I tossed the ball into the air. “Clefairy, come on out!” In a burst of red light, Clefairy appeared.

The children oohed and ahhed. Yolanda harrumphed. “I wanted to catch Clefairy!” Then her expression brightened. “Hey, Clefairy, you want me to brush you?”

“Clefairy!” Clefairy grinned and nodded and followed Yolanda to where she had all the brushes nicely laid out.

“So you caught a Clefairy, hmm?”

I whirled around to see Brock standing behind me, his arms crossed. “Yeah!” I grinned. “I can’t believe I was able to catch a Pokemon on my own, you know, without…” I paused, distracted as my eyes met his. I cleared my throat. “Your help.” I shrugged and clasped my hands behind my back.

“And you did a great job,” Brock smiled. “You’re turning into a strong, capable trainer.”

“You think so?” I beamed.

“I do. You’ve learned so much about interacting with Pokemon since you came to Pewter City three months ago.”

“I did learn from the best.”

“Well, I, uh, wouldn’t say I’m the best…” Brock stuttered, his face flushing. He cleared his throat. “I’m just glad to help you out, Annie.”

“And now I’m here to help you out.” I changed the subject.

“Right. I’ve already got the inside of the Pokehouse all cleaned, and now I’ve got the kids and Forest working on washing and brushing the Pokemon. Why don’t you start with…” He scanned the yard, then his gaze stopped at the Pokemon of choice. “Marill.”

“Lola’s Pokemon? That Marill?” I asked, a bit worried. Last time I saw Marill, it blasted me with Water Gun, and my clothes were soaked from collar to hem. Brock said Marill was just playing, and that it likes me, but I’m not so sure about that...

“That Marill, yes. I’ve already got the shampoo and brushes ready, right over there.” Brock indicated the spot.

I gulped, then forced a smile. “All right, I’ll get to work.” I knelt next to the hose at the side of the Pokehouse and picked up the shampoo and a brush. “Okay, Marill,” I called softly. “It’s time to get your fur washed…”

“Marill!” Marill toddled, much like a small child would, over to me. It smiled and flashed its most adorable, sparkly eyes.

“Aw, you’re so cute!” I giggled, then became serious again. “No, this is just a trick to get me to let my guard down so you can soak me!” I frowned, mentally preparing myself to be doused, and turned on the water hose. A small stream trickled from the hose. “Here comes the water, Marill.”

“Marill! Mar!” Marill danced under the water, loving it. After pouring some shampoo onto the brush, I began to lather and wash Marill’s fur. Marill giggled and wiggled, as though it were being tickled.

Then it was time to rinse. I turned the water pressure up to speed up the rinsing process and directed the flow of water at Marill. All was going well, until…

“Marill!” Suddenly, I was almost knocked backwards by a great spray of water! I shrieked and ducked as Marill proceeded to drench me with Water Gun. Cold water shot from its mouth, and soon my clothes were completely saturated!

I shrieked again as Marill continued to blast me. “Marill! No! Stop that! I’m not the one who’s supposed to be having a bath right now! Stop that right now! Aaaaaaaaaaah!”

Hearing my screams, Brock appeared around the side of the Pokehouse. “Annie!” He cried. “Are you all-- Oh!” He stopped as he surveyed the scene.

Marill stopped using Water Gun and turned to look up at him innocently. I glared at the mischievous Aqua Mouse Pokemon.

Brock began to scold Marill. “Now, Marill, that was very naughty of you! You know Annie doesn’t like to get wet!” He sighed, then turned to me. “Are you alright, Annie?” He grasped my hand and pulled me to my feet.

“I--” I began, then stopped, too angry at a certain Pokemon to speak.

Brock brushed my dripping hair out of my eyes. “You are going to be all right, aren’t you? Not going to catch cold now or anything?”

I shook my head. “I-i think I’m fine… I’m just not fond of being on the receiving end of Water Gun, that’s all.”

“Why don’t I get you some towels, so you can dry off a bit?”

I eyed Marill suspiciously. “Sure, and while you’re at it maybe you can make Marill promise to behave?”

Brock only smiled as he turned and disappeared inside the house.

I turned to Marill. “Why must you always cause trouble?”

“Marill…” Marill’s eyes watered, as if to express sorrow.

I sighed. “And why must I always forgive you? Come here.”

“Mar!” Marill brightened and hopped up into my arms, nuzzling me.

“Okay, okay!” I giggled, then sighed.

Moments later, Brock returned with his arms full of soft, dry towels. “Here, Annie. These should help. A bit.”

“Thanks.” I took one and used it to squeeze some of the water out of my hair. “What a day, hmm?” I joked. “First I’m underground, dodging boulders, now I’m dodging torrents of Water Gun!”

“Brock!” all the little ones came hurrying up to us at once. “We’re finished with the grooming! What now?” Beyond the kids, I could see all the Harrison’s Pokemon, and mine too, looking clean and shiny.

“Great job, kids,” Brock smiled. “Everyone ready for lunch?”

“Oh, yes!” The kids hopped up and down.

“I’m STARVING!” Tommy cried dramatically. “I’m about to DIE of hunger!”

“Oh, please!” Cindy scoffed. “I saw you sneak inside and have a snack 20 minutes ago.”

“We can all go in and have lunch,” Brock held up his hand before Tommy could respond to Cindy’s accusation. “I’m sure the Pokemon are hungry, too. Annie, are you joining us?”

I started towards the house, then stopped. “I’d love to, but I really should be getting home. I told Papa I wouldn’t stay long today. I need to check for my acceptance letter, anyway.”

“Acceptance letter?” Brock asked, confused.

I nodded. “I’ve applied to Celadon University. Didn’t you know? I’m going to become a researcher, just like Papa.”

“You’re leaving?” Brock choked.

“Well, not if I don’t get accepted,” I shrugged. “Anyway, I’d better go.”

Brock stood, gazing at me with those deep, dark eyes of his. Then he cleared his throat. “Hmm. Well, thanks for your help this morning. Will I see you tomorrow?”

“Maybe,” I smiled. “If I get accepted, I’ll start getting ready to leave for the semester. But I will see you soon, I hope.”

“I hope so, too,” Brock murmured. Then he turned to follow his younger siblings inside the house. “See you, Annie!”

“Alright! Good bye!” I smiled and gave a small wave as I turned to leave.

I decided to walk home today, instead of ride Onix. As I made my way up the mountain path, I decided to do some training along the way. “All right, Rhydon! Let’s go, buddy!”

Rhydon burst forth in a flash of brilliant red and let out an enthusiastic rumble. “Let’s start it off with a good old Rock Blast!”

I shivered with excitement as Rhyhorn practiced its attack. I was so pumped up for some reason. It was almost as if I were training right along with Rhyhorn, and we just fueled each other’s energy. “Rock Blast again!” I cheered, leaping into the air.

Suddenly, as I spoke, boulders seemingly shot from my own hands in into the cliffside across the pathway. Time seemed to pass in slow motion, and I felt almost suspended in midair as I watched. I dropped to the ground with a thud, too shocked to speak for a moment. I studied my hands in horror. “Did I just… No, I couldn’t have… Did I?”
