Midnight Series 1: Midnight Chapter 2

Mack sat on a rooftop of a tall building in San Francisco eating a sandwich he made for himself. He reveled in the balance of meat, cheese, sauce, vegetables, and pieces of bread that he had created. It was almost perfect if not for the absence of chips. He had forgotten to get chips at his local Walmart. Now he sat in pride of his almost perfect sandwich but in shame of not getting chips.

Mack, along with being quite the excellent sandwich maker, was the demiguardian of earth. The ability bestowed upon him was to be able to change almost any of his own body parts to any metal he liked as well as to enhance his strength. He had an above-average understanding of chemistry, therefore he somewhat understood what happened when he used his powers.

The afternoon sun was gleaming on the city skyline. The streets and sidewalks teemed with people in cars, buses, bikes, or just walking on the crosswalks or sidewalks near the tall buildings.

Mack took the last bite of his delicious sandwich and cleaned off his face with a napkin. He threw away the small sandwich bag he used to hold his lunch and went on his way.

A tall man-like rock creature appeared before him, towering over Mack as if the demiguardian was standing at the bottom of the Grand Canyon looking up at the nearest yet highest cliff face. Although this was hyperbole, the human-like Guardian was still 10 feet tall.

His whole body was made of rocks covered in ragged clothing that hid almost all of his body yet had small holes and tears in some places. His face was made of smaller rocks as if to better convey emotions, but he did not have eyes. They were just holes in his face.

The rock man spoke in a quiet whisper, “Hello, my kin, I have returned to relay you a message. Mack, you will have to go on a mission to save the world and gather the artifacts from the Guardian temples like the ones you and other demiguardians found around all of North America. You must gather a team with the help of a fellow demiguardian. He has a file containing all the resources you may need.”

Ian disappeared an instant later and another man, this time just a regular human, in a leather jacket, a white shirt, and blue jeans came from the entrance to the roof.

“Chris? What are you doing here?” Mack inquired to the newcomer, “And what the hell did I accidentally put in my sandwich to see Ian again?”

Chris signaled for Mack to follow, “We have to go. Follow me. And it’s weird, I know, but you have to listen to whatever your Guardian just told you. We need to form a team, whatever the hell that means, and you have to be the leader.”

The last statement shocked Mack. It had been a few months since he got his powers. He was mostly used to them, but being chosen to be a leader of people just like him with superpowers. The 25-year-old could barely teach his dog how to do simple tricks and he was expected to be a leader for superpowered humans.

While pondering, he had mindlessly sat in Chris’s car and they drove away from the building. A huge brown file folder landed on Mack’s Lap.

“Everything that we know right now is in that folder. All of the good allianced demiguardians have been sent to find me and you and to join our team for the greater good and all that crap,” Chris explained to Mack.

They pulled up to the place they needed to be. Chris had in his hands a metal bat just in case. It was a small, brown, metal building wedged in between two larger, regular looking, gray buildings. When Chris opened the metal door a waft of humid hot air came out. The two demiguardians snuck inside, closing the door behind them. Inside was a wooden, blue, Ikea table with wheeled office chairs. It didn’t smell too bad and there were file cabinets and a couple of fans around the small enclosed room. The building seemed to only be that one small enclosure.

Chris was particularly exhausted, so he decided to sit in one of the chairs, kicking back and swinging his metal bat while whistling in boredom. Mack began investigating the room some more, turning on the fans and inspecting the file cabinets. Then there was a knock on the metal door, the team was about to assemble.
