Any day now, it would be happening.

Mimi lay deep in a burrow, paws gently cradling her enormous belly. Any day now, she'd get to meet the tiny buneary which had been growing inside her.

The lopunny had been left almost completely alone, through her pregnancy. Her mate, Laurence, had long died; he'd been ripped to shreds by wild mightyena, while out getting food for her. The Roselia she'd befriended, who was in a similar situation to her, had been captured by some greedy trainer, who was looking for two pokemon for the price of one right in front of Mimi, and despite her efforts, she hadn't been able to save her.

Now, with the birth of her buneary fast approaching, Mimi would have to give birth, and then raise her son or daughter all by herself. The thought was as terrifying as it was exciting; soon, Mimi would meet the child she had so desperately wanted, even before she had met Laurence, but she would also have to give birth all alone. She would be the sole protector, sole guardian, of the little life inside her. She'd have to feed it berries, and teach it to forage, and protect it from trainers when they came.

She winced as a tiny paw-print, visible even under all of her fur, surfaced where her paw was, and a sharp, shooting pain went through her. She rubbed at the spot where the paw-print had been, crooning softly to her belly.

"There, now, little one," she said softly, "Soon, I'll be able to hold you in my arms. How does that sound?"

The kicks died down, and then stopped, much to Mimi's relief. For now, all that she wanted was to rest as much as possible. She'd need it, for when her buneary came.

She felt a small twinge, shortly before she fell into a deep, buneary-filled sleep...

An umbreon was sniffing around Eterna Forest, its trainer by its side. It went to a burrow, sniffed around it, and then reported back to its trainer, who was none too happy about her pokemon's failures.

"Arceus, Moonshine, we've been at this all day!" the trainer complained, running a brush through her thick brown hair, "I can't believe that we haven't found one single lousy buneary!"

The umbreon barked affirmatively, rolling its eyes. It had been at this with its trainer, Hannah, all day, as she searched for a buneary. She was desperate for the pretty pokemon, so she could use it in a showcase, apparently.

The dark type sniffed at another burrow, finding something...Interesting. It peeked its head down the hole...

And there was a shiny Lopunny there. A shiny pink Lopunny, who also appeared to be heavily pregnant...She was perfect. This way, her master would get two pokemon for the price of one.

The umbreon cried gleefully, nudging its mistress toward the burrow.

"Arceus be damned...It's a shiny!" she squealed, "A shiny lopunny! Right, c'mon, Moonshine, she's gonna be ours!"

The trainer's cries shocked Mimi awake, and her heart stopped at the sight before her. An umbreon and a hungry-eyed trainer, who was already brandishing a quick ball. Alas, her pink fur had put her in the firing line of yet another trainer.

Mimi lumbered to her feet. She couldn't just lie here, and let herself, and her child be caught...

She glanced at the ground behind her. Her burrow wouldn't go any further, and even if it could, digging would take too much time. There was but one way for her to save herself...

The lopunny used focus blast, shooting a pulsing blue sphere at the dark type. As it cried out, and fell on its face, Mimi made her escape, running as fast as her huge, pregnant body would carry her. She cradled her belly protectively, promising her buneary that they'd be safe.

The trainer screamed, "Get up! Don't let her get away!" at the umbreon, and it obeyed, speeding like a hunting mightyena toward Mimi. The lopunny kept running, launching yet another focus blast at the dark type. It evaded, earning praise from the trainer.

"Now, use dark pulse!" the trainer demanded.

The umbreon obeyed, shooting murky beams at Mimi, but she skilfully dodged them...And then, she stumbled, crying out.

The twinge that Mimi had felt before was back, only this time, it was twice as strong. It hurt like hell, and she felt something shift down inside her...

Mimi cursed to the heavens. Why did she have to be in labour now, of all times? It didn't matter, in fact, she needed to get somewhere safe quickly. She didn't know how long it would be until she gave birth, but with the umbreon, and its trainer on her tail, she didn't want to know.

She got up as another, stronger twinge hit her, scanning the forest path. The left side was a network of dense, dark shrubbery, while the right side was bare, and looked as if it had some mounds of dirt, leftover from pokemon who had previously burrowed there...It was perfect.

The lopunny launched a toxic attack at the umbreon, just as it was getting up.

The trainer grimaced, throwing an antidote at her pokemon. "Get that damn lopunny, you wimp!" she demanded, "Help me catch it, or else you'll be released!"

The umbreon nodded, launching another dark pulse at Mimi. This time, it hit, and the pregnant pokemon fell to her knees, as its trainer ran after her with a quick ball.

Mimi panted as she helped herself to her feet, staggering, as yet another contraction hit her. If she could speak, she'd have said to the trainer, "You'll never take me alive! You can't have me, and you can't have my baby, either!"

The lopunny launched one final focus blast at the umbreon, before she spotted an empty burrow, crawling down it. She sealed the entrance tightly with dirt and debris, before heading to the deepest part of the burrow, packing it with more dirt, and lying there, motionless.

The umbreon approached the burrow, busting the entrance with a shadow ball, but surprisingly, it couldn't see, or smell a thing. The lopunny was gone.

Mimi heard the trainer berating the umbreon for its failures as they stomped away in a huff. The lopunny lay, panting in the safety of the burrow, as another contraction hit her. For now, she was safe...But she couldn't rest yet.

The lopunny breathed through the contractions, gritting her teeth to keep herself from crying out, when the worst ones hit her. She didn't want anyone, human, pokemon, or trainer, finding her, not when she was having her buneary.

And then, it was time. Mimi's lower body was on fire, and she felt the urge to push.

She spread her legs, and counted to ten as she put all of her strength into a big push. And then she panted, exhausted, and in pain, before she did it again. And then again. And again.

Mimi lay, tears streaming from her eyes, as she felt something slip out. She knew that all it took was one more push, but she simply couldn't find the strength. It was killing her to do it for even a second. But then she thought of the buneary she'd been wanting to meet ever since she felt the first tiny kick. She thought of Laurence, who would have so wanted to see his baby grow up.

She cried out, her entire lower body burning, as she put the last of her strength into one final push...

And then, there she was.

Mimi glanced down at the tiny, virtually hairless buneary between her legs, and in an instant, she burst into tears. If there were a more beautiful baby in the world, Mimi hadn't met her. She had the tiniest little button nose, and pink paws, which had yet to gain their coat of cream fluff.

Mimi picked her up, and lay back as she clutched her to her chest. A daughter. She had a beautiful daughter.

"Welcome to the world..." Mimi paused, trying to think of an appropriate name, "Amaia."

And Mimi lay, safely enclosed in her new burrow, as she held Amaia in her arms.
