Fading Faith

by TheStargazer

TheStargazer I had to write this for my English Class... We had to write a short story based off that was set in America in the 1930s (i'm not American). I don't know what mark I got yet but i'm happy with it so i'll post it here (Its quite weird... the story is through the perspective of a sheep)
My eyes open to a peculiar setting that I have not yet seen before. As I struggle onto my feet, I begin to observe the room and realise that there is almost no room to walk around. Out of fear, I panic and I stumble back, accidentally kicking my resting brother on the floor. He looks uncomfortable from the room jerking slowly up and down like a small earthquake. I try to move out of the metallic room however I have almost no room to move so I stay as I am. It is hard to breathe because of all the dust in the air and how many of us there are in this enclosed area, however the small lines of light at the back of the room are providing everyone with a sense of what's happening. It’s hard to make sense of what is happening however, as everyone is yelling, making it difficult for me to concentrate. Amidst all the yelling, was a quiet whistling noise. The source of the whistle was unknown to me however it was quite close by. The area we are in suddenly stopped moving, causing all of us to try and regain our balance, and shortly after, we are all standing there, watching as a man in his late 30s, somehow removes the back of the wall, turning it into a ramp so we could finally escape onto the fresh grass. The man was wearing a white buttoned up shirt which was turning brown from all the dust and a black tie with grey jeans and old shoes. The man had a large grin on his face, and was acting very energetically, like he just had the best day of his life.

Immediately, as I stepped out onto the grass, the sun began to beat down hard on me. As I began to eat some delicious grass, I began to view my surroundings, The field I’m in is full of luscious grass and is also quite large but there is a wooden fence, blocking us from the rest of the world. Almost instinctively, I charge at the fence a fast as I can, in desperation. I crash into the wall and fall back. I look up at the fence and see that there is no damage done to the fence. The man who let us out chuckled a bit at my failure of escape as the sun beamed behind him, making it incredibly hard to look at him without squinting. This view of him changed over time. Slowly, the days here got colder and colder. I was given less and less food.

I was getting quite skinny.

Things were getting worse on this little farm. The lack of food made me want to escape even more but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t. Freedom was just within reach but a stupid fence blocked me off from the rest of the world. The man who let me out of the metal room was still around the place, however, his personality and how he presented himself was completely different. It’s like he was drained of all his bright and saturated colours and was now monochromatic and dull. He used to bounce around the farm, full of life and energy, whistling some of his favourite songs and talking to himself about how he had accomplished his dream in his loud and powerful voice. His hair was always nicely combed and his nose, small and soft. The man’s clothes used to be formal and snazzy and looked like he was dressed to impress. But overtime, things have changed. I now watch him tonight as he shuffles his feet in his dirty, ragged long sleeved shirt and jeans over to his favourite bench that looks over the whole farm, coughing because of the dust and muttering words that he would have never said before. His once inspiring voice has become quiet, monotone and sad. His once neat hair was messy and all over the place and his now heavy and dull eyes don’t sparkle and twinkle in the moonlight like they once used to. I watch him as he looked over the farm, with tiny tears in his eyes that quickly turned into waterfalls. He turned away from the farm and as quite suddenly, a loud, ear splitting noise was ringing in my ears, followed shortly by a startling flash of light further in the distance. The sudden outburst of the weather, which is quickly followed by heavy rain and violent winds, was enough to convince me to try to go back to my family where it was warm however, I quickly glance back at him where I see him sitting on the ground, his head down, and a small piece of green paper flew away from him as the rain hid his tears.

That morning, I had come up with a plan. I wanted to escape and be free from everyone and so no one can tell me what to do. I’m tired from being held captive and I wouldn’t be able to survive here for much longer anyway because the food was getting sparse. I get up pretty early and ran as hard as I could at a weaker spot of the fence. Although I was getting weaker and weaker with every passing, so are the fences. Eventually, my plan works and a part of the fence is broken. I feel a large amount of pain from ramming into the wooden fence as the sun shines on me as I run out of the now run down farm, filled with adrenaline. I couldn’t believe it. I was one step closer to the fresh grass, and the rest of the world, I wouldn't be caged anymore... I ran as fast I could to get out of the stupid place. I almost arrived at the end of the farm but what I saw next however was the worst thing I could have seen.

Another fence.

Hopelessness overcame me as I fell to the floor from the pain I was enduring up until that moment. I thought I was so close to freedom but there was another fence here the whole time, Darkness filled my eyes and overcame me as I passed out.

I woke up in a dark run down room. The only source of light was through a small window in the back of the room. The roof looked unstable, making me anxious of when it was going to collapse. As I tried to escape, I saw the farm owner with an unreadable look on his face, with red eyes, likely from crying. He began to blurt out words that didn’t make sense to me like ‘this wasn’t meant to happen’ and ‘I can’t keep you around longer, I don’t have enough food. I’m sorry you’re first but it seems you didn’t want to be here’ in a monotone voice. As I struggled to escape, confused by the man’s actions, My vision began to get worse and worse and suddenly, the darkness that overcame me before, came back except,

I didn’t wake up again.

That was beautiful. I am not really that emotional, but I wanted to cry because the feelings of the protagonist were expressed really well, and such loss of hope really hit me as a reader emotionally. Really well done, and I think you have talent and a future in creative writing if you put enough time into it. Maybe I can take advice on writing from you someday...
