Chasing An Impossible Dream

by Shiny Blue Gardevoir

Shiny Blue Gardevoir A lonely pokemon dreams of being caught, and performing in showcases, but she's certain that it will never happen. Why? Because she's not a pikachu, or an eevee, or one of the starters... She's just a furret.
“Now, one, two, three, four, Fleur, use solar beam, and Bruja, use shadow ball!”

Uxia’s meganium, Fleur, stopped at the performer’s side, body glowing as she began to absorb solar energy, before she fired a white beam straight at Bruja the mismagius, who countered it with a murky purple ball. The result was a purple, pearlescent cloud.

Uxia jumped atop Fleur’s back, posing, as Bruja floated above them, to mark the performance’s end.

“We’re finished!” Uxia announced, immediately receiving applause from her other pokemon; a pachirisu named Sparky, and a kirlia, named Lucius.

Fleur and Bruja bowed, as Uxia opened her bag, offering them both a pokepuff for their efforts.

“You two were great!” the girl gushed, “If you perform like that in our showcase, then that princess key will be as good as ours!”

The two pokemon delightedly took their rewards, biting greedily into them with an almost childlike glee, as Uxia petted them...

From the sidelines, another pokemon was watching the display, sighing wistfully as she gazed over at the performer and her pokemon. Getting to dance in front of a big crowd, and having people cheer for you, and being fed pokepuffs by a loving trainer... How that pokemon dreamed of such a life.

But she wouldn’t ever get to live such a life. She wasn’t cute, or popular, like the many eevee and pikachu whom she saw with their trainers. She wasn’t beautiful, like a gardevoir, or tough, like a machoke. She couldn’t fly, or swim, or hit hard in battle, no...

She was but a furret. A common pest, whom no performer would ever want on their team.

Still, she couldn’t help her love of performing. Furret loved to experiment with combination moves, and TMs, which she found discarded outside shops, and dance steps. Even if nobody would ever want to watch her perform, she still loved to do it. It was a passion she had yet to tame.

Furret positioned herself near the training ground, where the performer and her team were, but not near enough so that they’d see her, or so she hoped. Then, she began her routine.

She started by using swift, spinning rapidly, so that she surrounded herself with a ring of golden stars. Then, as they began flying away, she used hyper voice, shattering them into a shower of sparkling gold dust. She finished by back-flipping as she used aqua tail, slamming it into the ground, so that a splash of water covered the ground in front of her. She bowed gracefully, and did her very best to imagine a performer beside her, and the applause of a huge crowd...

“Hey, that was pretty amazing!”

Furret’s ears pricked up. Was that someone praising her? No, it couldn’t have been; no one was watching her. It must just have been her imagination.

She got up, opening her eyes... And there was someone there, much to her surprise. The performer whom she’d seen before, and her pachirisu...

The performer knelt down as she approached Furret, smiling warmly. “I loved your performance, Furret,” she began, “Y’see, I’m a performer too, and I was just practicing with my team, when my pachirisu saw you. You were really good!”

Furret backed away. This had to be some sort of sick joke. Nobody ever complimented her on her performances, especially not other trainers. What was this girl up to?

The performer gestured to the training ground behind her. “Why don’t you come and perform with us?” she invited, “Even if just for a little bit. Don’t worry, I promise I won’t try to catch you, or anything!”

Furret knew right then, that the performer was lying. Many other performers, and trainers, had used that lie to bait her into battle. To beat her up, so that their pokemon could gain some experience, and an easy win... And in her desperation to be with a team, she’d fallen for it...

Furret dashed away from the performer as fast as she could, eager to escape her clutches. She couldn’t let herself be hurt. Not again.

Uxia thought about following the furret, but decided against it, for now. It didn’t seem to want to perform with her, but she hoped that she’d at least see it again before she left...

Uxia caught Furret watching her again the next day, however, and she once again, offered the pokemon the chance to perform with her. Furret ran away yet again, still convinced that she was lying.

Uxia caught Furret watching her perform, every day, for at least a week and every day, she offered it the same thing. And every day, Furret ran away. She wanted to take the offer. She desperately wanted to perform, and to join that performer, but she couldn’t have been serious, could she? There were wild eevees, and pichus, and female salandits running through the town, and she was seriously offering a precious spot on her team to a lowly pokemon like her... Was she out of her mind? Still, it would have been nice to imagine that that performer really did want her.

The next day, Furret went to the same place as before, to watch the performer practice, only to find that she wasn’t there. So she’d really given up on her. The one chance that she could have had at being a performer’s pokemon, even if just for a bit, was gone...

Furret wandered sadly through the town, passing many performers, still in their showcase costumes, on her way. Pokemon hissed and growled at her. Their owners spat at her, and told her to scram...

Eventually, she settled at the back of some building, curling her tail around her thin body, as hot tears pricked her eyes. She’d never get to be anyone’s beloved pokemon. She’d never get to perform, or even battle. She’d be hated until the day that she died, and all because she’d run away from the one performer who might have wanted her--

“Hey, there you are, Furret!”

Furret’s heart leapt in her throat. It was the same performer as from before, but in a grand costume, and a glittering key hanging from her waist.

“We just won the showcase,” the performer announced, “So that takes me up to two princess keys. One more, and I can challenge the Nita King!”

Furret wagged her tail, happy to hear of the performer’s success.

The performer knelt down, getting her kit bag off of her shoulder. “Y’know, Furret, if you want to come and perform with me, then the offer is still open,” she began, “But since I’ve gotta leave town in the morning, I was thinking that we make the offer permanent, if you know what I mean.”

Furret watched closely, as she got a quick ball out of her bag. She couldn’t possibly mean...

“You’re a great performer, Furret, and I’d love it if you came with me,” she offered, “So, how about it?”

Furret approached the performer with extreme trepidation. This was exactly what she wanted. This was her last chance at her dream...

And she decided to take it with both paws.

Furret tapped the quick ball with her paw, letting it reduce her to glowing light, before she was beamed inside. This was it. Finally, her dream of being a performer’s pokemon had come true.

Two weeks later, Furret performed alongside her new owner, whom she’d now learned was called Uxia, easily defeating a pair of eevees, and a charizard. The look on their faces when they realised that they’d lost to a furret was satisfying to see... But not as satisfying as Uxia’s smile, and the hug that she received as the performer was handed her princess key.

So good! I love the story, but I'd improve some paragraph spacing. I also love how you put personality in every character in the story.
