The Minecraft Story: Chapter 3: The Forest

The forest seemed like it was the most joyful thing for Steve and Alex. They had both set up scarecrows and dummies that Steve sliced through with an iron sword and Alex shot at with a bow.. Occasionally they would find a bunny, which they both enjoyed hunting. Whenever they found one they would often have competitions as to who could kill the bunny first. Alex would usually win, as she had fantastic accuracy with a bow. Since all Steve had was a sword, he would have to chase after the bunny zig-zagging after it. And then as soon as he was about to take the fatal swing at the bunny, he would groan as he watched an arrow come out of nowhere and pin the bunny to the ground.

Today was like any other. Steve and Alex were both sweating profusely as they practiced their combat skills on the scarecrows. They had only found two rabbits today, but that was fine. The most they had ever found in one day was 5. Neither of them knew why they enjoyed combat so much. They both knew that neither of them would enlist in Dillsbury’s military and have to suffer through the tyranny of Gareth. The military was very good at protecting the town, and Steve and Alex rarely fought any hostile mobs.

“Ready to head home, Lex?”

“How many times to I have to tell you not to call me that?”, Alex hissed. Steve merely chuckled as he sliced the head off of a scarecrow with one fluid motion.

“We stayed out longer than usual, we better get going before uncle starts to worry.” Steve could never work up the courage to call Mark “dad” like Alex always did.

“Yeah, no kidding,” Alex said as she rushed to walk by Steve’s side. “Last time we stayed out late, dad nearly-“ Alex suddenly paused and stopped in her tracks.

Confused, Steve looked around and could see nothing but trees and the remains of his scarecrows. “What is it Alex?”

“Shush.” Alex looked frozen in place. Steve tried to read her emotions. It looked like a bit of fear mixed with confusion and just a pinch of anxiousness. “Did you hear that?” She asked in a low whisper.

Steve listened. Nothing. Maybe he hadn’t heard it? Maybe Alex was going crazy? No, she didn’t seem like that. What was going on?

Suddenly, Steve heard it. Alex was not crazy. It sounded like a low garbling sound, like someone speaking but extremely low pitched and almost in an alien language. It sounded like it was close, but far away from them at the same time. And it seemed like the sound came from all directions.

Neither Steve or Alex said a word. They didn’t have to. They both knew full well what this was. Instinctively, Steve and Alex both turned their backs towards each other. Steve held up his sword in a combat stance and Alex began loading her bow with an arrow. They both scanned the environment with their eyes. Steve then realized that he felt the exact same emotions he had seen in Alex earlier; fear, and just a little bit of confusion.

“W-we know you’re out there, you foul scum,” Steve said, trying to sound tough. He wanted to yell, but couldn’t feel himself doing it for some reason. He was talking louder than he usually did, but not quite a yell. “Just come out here and we can end this.” Steve and Alex both circled around. Lookin for any signs in the environment.

“There!” Alex suddenly yelled, and Steve heard the thwang of an arrow being fired, and what sounded like a small pop. As quick as lighting, he turned to see Alex’s arrow stuck in a tree. But there was nothing there, only some small purple particles near the tree that disappeared shortly.

Steve’s heartbeat began increasing. He felt like he was being watched. But he didn’t know where. He couldn’t help but stare at the purple particles as the disappeared. He heard the garbling noise again. But there was something different about it. It sounded like it was coming from something...right...next to...him.

Steve hesitantly turned his gaze to his left side and found himself staring into two purple eyes on a pitch black face. They locked eyes for a moment, when suddenly the creature screeched.

“GWWAAAAAHHHHH!!”

Steve grunted and swung his sword forward. Nope, then Enderman had teleported away. But not too far away. The fight was on.
