Back to the Darkness: BTTD Chapter 9: Footsteps

by Silvermist599

Silvermist599 Kara and Mikey still haven't gone back to the camp, and now Dorothy and Michael are going after them.
Tomorrow morning came and went and Kara and Mikey still hadn’t returned. Dorothy here, by the way. Kara and Mikey weren’t here for this part, so they asked me to narrate. Anyway, I had been getting worried. As little as I wanted to return to that accursed school, we needed to help them if they needed it. They saved us, so it was the least we could do to return the favor.

“We need to go after them.” Michael said before I could voice my own thoughts of the same nature.

“I agree entirely.” I told him. “But do we even know how to get back there? I mean, where even are we.” I said as I looked at the somewhat map like thing that the color version of Noah had drawn.

“I hadn’t thought about that…” Michael said solemnly, sitting back down on the tree stump he’d been standing on. “We can’t just leave them…” I didn’t bother answering. Both of us knew that we needed to find some way to get back to the school, but we also both knew that we could wander for days if we couldn’t figure out the right direction.

I’m not sure what inspired me to do so, but I decided to look over at where they’d left from and I noticed something that I hadn’t noticed before; there were footprints. I hadn’t thought to look for them before because in the colorless world, our shoes were designed to leave no trace, but there’s weren’t.

“Come on, Mikey, I found our path,” I said, taking off into the forest as I followed the faint, but still visible footprints that our colorful duplicates had created.

“Where are you going?” Mikey shouted as he followed me through the dense forest.

“Footprints,” I said simply, and he seemed to understand me, because he followed me as I ran the rest of the way. When we got to the school, though, we saw a broken window and it looked like people were recovering from an intruder, which we knew was probably their colored doubles’ doing. Unfortunately, it didn’t seem like they’d made it out.

“What do we do now?” Michael asked from beside me as I looked on at the school.

“We break in,” I said simply. “They’ve got to be inside, where else would they be?” I asked and he didn’t seem to have any counterargument for it.

“But wouldn’t we just get stopped by whatever got them?” Michael asked, and I hated to admit it, but he was right. We didn’t know what happened to the other two.

“Well we’ve got to try…” I said, not giving up.

“Yeah, but shouldn’t we try to find a different way in so we don’t get caught the same way?” He asked, and I hated when he was right.

“Sure, where to you suggest?” I ask, and he points. I look to where he’s pointing and he wants us to try getting in from…

“The Roof!?!”
