Back to the Darkness: BTTD Chapter 7: Reckless

by Silvermist599

Silvermist599 Kara and Mikey make their way back to the school, just the two of them again. Will they be able to get in unseen?
“So, what’s your plan?” Mikey asked me as we trudged through the dark dead woods of Artem Isle toward the school. “I mean, we can’t just walk in and ask for the projector thing, we’re wanted… well, criminals!” I hated it when he was right, but I wasn’t going to let him realize that.

“Why do you think I brought this?” I asked him, pointing to the necklace around my neck as I slightly bluffed based on my prior suspicions “I suspect it can do much more than we think it can, and that’s only proven by the measures Colstrom is willing to go through to get it.” I said, not meeting Mikey’s eyes. “We know it’s got infinite electricity as well as the fact that it’s a flash-drive. However, if it were that simple, why would he care if we had ours as long as he still has his. It’s not like he needs multiple infinite power sources or like he doesn’t have more flash-drives than he knows what to do with.” I said, touching the necklace gingerly before continuing,” Furthermore, the other power we know about it is its power to travel interdimensional, but as long as he had the one necklace, he doesn’t need another one, because it can work for multiple people, as we saw because it transported both of us. There’s got to be something else. Something dangerous.”

“Huh,” Mikey said, pausing to consider my reasoning, and he seemed to buy it. “I guess that does make sense… but how do you know?” Mikey asked as we came up upon the school, which was now lit by police lights and spotlights that were trying to either defend the school, or possibly even posted to specifically catch us.

“And what else do you think it does? Grant wishes?” Mikey asked, and I realized I didn’t know.

“No, but just think about everything we know about Nate.” I replied as I looked on at the gray brick building that we would be infiltrating…again. “He wasn’t always here but has been since he was ten years old. He just appeared here and was adopted by his parents.” I began, pointing out the obvious that no one in our group had ever thought to question. “He didn’t even have any memories at that point. It’s just so strange.”

“As for the power, I’m… not really sure, but I think I can at least use its electricity to blow the circuits in the school if I plug it in and short the computer. I may not be the techy one, but I’m pretty sure I can do that.” I said, with relative confidence. The necklace was an infinite power source after all, so if I discharged it, there should be no way any electronics could survive that kind of shock.

“Okay, so the plan is get in, short a computer… then what?” Mikey asked expectantly, pointing out the fact that my plan only took us so far. “How are we going to…” He said before it dawned on him. “You already know where it is don’t you,” He said, looking at me sideways. “You saw something.”

“Well, yeah, there was an entire lab, I’m sure we can find something in there to get us on the right track.” I said confidently, hiding the fact that I really didn’t know what I was getting us into, but the thrill of adventure was getting to me. This was the kind of thing that we had been anticipating forever. A chance to go on an adventure and fight using magic and our own wit.

“And how are we going to see?” He asked, us seemingly having swapped roles as he was full of reason and I was rushing into things blind. “Overcharging the place would knock out the lights.”

“Well, we’ll figure it out,” I said before the excitement got the better of me and I dashed toward the broken window of the school building.

“What?!” He exclaimed in a whisper as he dashed after me. “I’m supposed to be the dumb reckless one, not you!” He followed me inside anyway.
