Pokemon the Journey: Book One: Sinnoh - Chapter 3: Love Triangle!? What?!

by YourLittleSylvia

YourLittleSylvia Okay, so I finally got healed in the Pokemon Center, right? And I wanted to check out the Poketch Company. But then Lucas wanted to go to the Pokemon Trainer School. He thought Barry might be there, so I went there with him instead.

And then suddenly there was a fight out of nowhere! I don't know what happened! But I think it has something to do with Lucas and Barry having a crush on the same person.

Who is it?! I really wanna know! And I wanna end this fighting! But what's this love triangle got to do with me?!

(Yes, a filler chapter, but I needed some of these at least. This chapter takes place in the evening. Again, first time posting a series. I just hope y'all like it.)
Ding! Ding! Ding ding ding!

I walked out from the room behind Nurse Joy and Chansey, walking up to Lucas, who was standing and looking excited. Poor guy must've been pretty worried.

"So how's your arm?" he asked me.

I swung it around normally. "Couldn't be better!"

Lucas and I turned to Nurse Joy and bowed respectfully. "Thank you, Nurse Joy!" Lucas and I said simultaneously, me giggling afterward that we happened to say it at the same time.

I'm a child, okay?

Anyway, Nurse Joy beamed at us. "It's no problem, really!" she exclaimed. "If you ever need anything, don't hesitate to come here! I even have a room prepared for you for tonight!" She seemed to tell me that last comment. Lucas must've arranged that.

I nodded. "What's the room number?" I asked Lucas.

"Room 203," he said.

I nodded. Nurse Joy handed our keys and we went upstairs to the room. It had two beds, one bathroom, and a couch. Lucas and I were going to have to alternate using the bathroom to shower and change.

I could work with this.

"Cool," I said. "Hey, it's even got a Poke Ball safe!" I put Pip's Poke Ball in the safe before realizing I needed to label the ball.

Well, I was good with art, and I did bring my paints with me, but I had no time to paint Pip's Poke Ball tonight. I'll have to do it later along the journey. So I put a blue Piplup sticker on the ball from the pack of Sinnoh Starter Stickers I had gotten as a kid.

Yes, so I packed stickers, alright? I thought they'd be necessary for the Poke Balls, like any sane person should!

"Hey, that's clever," Lucas pointed out. "Got a Chimchar sticker?"

I nodded and peeled off a little Chimchar face, sticking it to Lucas's Chimchar's Poke Ball. "There ya go!"

There were twelve slots, separated into two sections. One for each Trainer, no doubt. I put Pip's Poke Ball on the right side, facing forward, and Lucas put Chimchar's Poke Ball on the left, also facing forward. I closed it and entered a four-digit code.

0206

This was my older sibling's birthday. February 6th.

"There we go!" I exclaimed, satisfied.

"That's the code?" Lucas asked. "How do you remember it?"

"Kai's birthday," I answered simply.

Lucas looked like he had just seen a poor Happiny hit by a truck. "Oh..." he muttered, wide-eyed.

I guessed he was a fan of Kai.

Leaving him in a daze, I looked around the room and tossed my backpack next to a bed. Pip jumped off my shoulder and landed on the bed. He gave me a weird look. "Pip Piplup Pip?"

'You realize Lucas is dazed, right?'

I was surprised by suddenly being able to understand Pip's language. "Y-yeah," I said, still a little uncertain. "I do. He's just a fan of my sibling, though."

Pip smirked knowingly (though of what he knows I am still uncertain). "Pip Piplup, Piplup."

'I'm pretty sure that's not it; Lucas is sharing a room with you.'

"So?"

"Pip Pip--Piplup, Piplup Pip--Lup Pip."

'Lucas--a boy--is sharing a room with you--a girl.'

Me being me, I still didn't understand.

Pip sighed in frustration. "Piplup. Piplup Pip, lup Pip."

'Forget it. You'll find out when you grow older--eventually.'

I shrugged, confused. "Yo, Lucas," I called, snapping him out of his surprise. "Come on, that safe isn't made of diamond!"

Lucas blushed and jogged over to his bed, the farthest from the door. I giggled and flopped onto my bed. "What's up with you, Lucas? Are you just that big of a fan of my sibling's?" I asked.

Lucas shook his head. "I mean, I am a huge fan of Kai, but that's not why I was standing there, gawking. I was thinking about how we just beat those two from Galactica or something."

I shook my head. "Team Galactic. I know about them too well. My dad's brother--so, my uncle--leads them. I think the only reason Dad didn't join his brother was because he HATED Pokemon. So naturally he married my Pokemon-loving mother and moved to Sinnoh, known as a Region full of Pokemon Trainers, because logic."

Lucas was even more stunned. "How many family connections do you have?! First your sibling's the Pokemon Champion, then your uncle's a leader of an evil organization?! What's next, your little brother becomes a Pokemon Coordinator?!"

"Actually, my sister."

"WHAT?!"

"Yeah, she's planning to be a Top Coordinator."

Lucas was EVEN MORE stunned.

Wow, I just realized how many family connections I really had. That was a lot. The only think my mom was famous for was being awesome at making homemade compote. And actually, it was really good.

Pause: For those of you who don't know what compote is, it's a delicious drink made of various fruits, Berries, or both. Mom made a lot and usually it was warm--perfect for the wintry chills we'd receive in Snowpoint City.

Lucas finally calmed down and sat on his bed. A moment of silence rested between us. Pip took the opportunity to snuggle into my lap.

"So what do you want to be?" he asked finally.

I sighed. "That's what I want to find out. Originally, Kai and I were going to go at it and become rivals, leaving at the same time, and we were going to travel together. Kai and I would try to become the best Trainers. But then Alex butted in and said how she wanted to join us. We both thought she was annoying so we tried to keep her off the team. Then Alex and I started arguing. Kai got angry at us and decided we'd all leave when we turned 14--old enough to go off on our journeys without being stupid. So that's what we decided. Kai turned 14 the next year and left us. Alex and I kept arguing for two more years. Every one was worse than the last. The last time I talked to Alex, I told her I didn't want to see her the morning I left. I didn't." I sighed again. "Alex told me she'd become a Top Coordinator. She'd make her own clothes, beat every other Trainer in style, and every time she rubbed it in my face that she'll be successful and I won't. And yet I started being an artist before she did. I'm better at art and literature, yet I know nothing about fashion and style. She'll be better than me! Have I mentioned she's an ice skater? Been skating since she was four years old. And what've I done? Made snow angels."

Lucas listened intently. "Man, sounds tough."

"'Tough' doesn't begin to describe it. Every time Alex does something very little and seemingly insignificant, I become infuriated now. It's awful! And now I don't even know what to be anymore!" I hung my head, suddenly feeling sad.

Lucas paused awhile. "W-well, what other things are you good at?"

I began listing things off. "I can sing, draw, write, dance, paint, play a flute, make all sorts of multimedia art that isn't 3-dimensional, play tennis, and apparently I can understand Pokemon better than other people."

Lucas tilted his head to the side at the last comment. "What? Understand Pokemon?"

I nodded. "Just now, Pip was talking and he was telling me something about--" Pip covered my mouth. I wrestled his flippers off my mouth. "Okay, okay! I won't tell him! Yeesh!"

Lucas was shocked. "Y-you've got so much going on for you, I can't even begin to describe the many things you can become! You can be a Pokemon Performer, like many young Trainers in Kalos, or you can be a sportsman, or an artist, or even a revolutionary Pokemon communicator! Heck, I bet you could get a ton of research done like this!"

I nodded. "Technically, I could. But have you ever thought that like all other elements of nature, Pokemon might have secrets that shouldn't be shared with the world? Like Legendary Pokemon. Now that it's public knowledge, more and more reports of people failing to pull off legends have appeared. I think it's unsafe."

Lucas pondered my words for a moment. "You might be right," he told me. "We don't know some things. But if you find them, you have the option of keeping the information to yourself."

I shook my head. "No. No research."

Lucas was shocked, but sighed. "Fine. Do what you want. But you could still do a WHOLE lot more!"

I nodded. "I know. It's just that... I dunno, sometimes it seems like there's too little, but when someone points out how many things I can do, it seems like almost too MUCH. Y'know?"

Lucas nodded. "I know. But hey, why don't you take the Pokemon League challenge?"

I thought for a moment, remembering what it was. "The Pokemon League Challenge? You mean the one where you gather eight Gym Badges and challenge the Pokemon League, including the Elite Four and Kai?"

Lucas nodded again. "That's the one. Unless you don't want to battle Kai, which is totally understandable."

I shrugged. "I want to collect the eight Gym Badges. I want to try to get Kai off of their throne. But that's not why I began my journey. I want to learn about Pokemon."

Lucas nodded. "Sure! And that makes sense! But hey, if you become a Pokemon Professor, you can just learn about them!"

I shook my head. I've already told you, no! Besides, you're getting a bit repetitive."

"Y-yeah, but that's just to show you my point. Research or no research, you're learning. And research can be seen as many different things: words, field work, education, emotional, etc. There's tons of ways to research and you don't need to do it the old-fashioned way."

I sighed. "I'll think about it," I told him.

And boy did I think about it. That night, I could hardly sleep. Research? Studying Pokemon? But didn't most Professors have tree or plant names? Like Rowan, Juniper, Oak, Elm, Birch, Sycamore, and Kukui? What kinda tree is a 'Reviar'?

Professor Reviar? Professor Sylvia? Professor Sylvia Reviar?

Professor Rosebush?

Now I'm just playing with random names. What was I thinking about?

Oh, right. Pokemon Professors. And do I want to be one?

I wasn't sure.

I think I did.

I did. I totally did.

When I woke up, I had dreamt many Pokemon flocked to me for protection from a beastly Pokemon.

Well, that certainly was dramatic. I was glad it wasn't real.

I sat up, wearing cute Piplup pajamas. Lucas had adorable Poke Ball-patterned ones that were blue. Mine were also blue, so we kinda matched. It was time to wake up. I got up and grabbed some clothes, showering. Fifteen minutes later, I got out wearing a shirt exactly like the one I had on yesterday, except it was cyan where the pink used to be. The jean shorts looked almost the same, save for a cute Poke Ball pattern on the bottom of one of the legs.

Lucas was still asleep. I smirked and crept to his side, trying not to wake him. I took a soft breath. "I've been stalking you," I whispered slowly and dramatically.

Lucas shot up and screamed. "WAAAHH!" After hearing my squeaky giggle fit, Lucas flopped back onto the bed, clutching his heart. "Very funny," he grumbled.

I couldn't stop giggling, so he just got up, grabbed a change of clothes, and took his turn to shower. Pip woke up from Lucas screaming and gave me a dirty look. "Sorry, Pip," I exclaimed, breathless. "But you should've seen Lucas' face! It was hilarious!"

Pip shrugged as though admitting I was probably right.

"I'm totally right!"

Pip gave me a glance that said, 'I know what's going on here.'

"Don't give me that look."

He kept doing it.

I rolled my eyes. "Fine. Whatever, y'know? We'll get food after Lucas showers."

So we did. I had a breakfast steak and eggs and Lucas had an omelette. I never knew why people loved these things so much! I just wasn't a fan of them.

Anyway, when we finished our lunch, we went to check out of the Pokemon Center and left, exploring Jubilife City.

"So where do you wanna go first?" Lucas asked.

"I wanna see the Poketch Company. While I was looking for Pip, some guy sold me a Poketch for 5,000 PokeDollars on a discount, and I had the money, so I took it. Besides, it helped me find you guys," I told him.

"Wait, you said 'magic'! I, for a moment, thought you were being serious about that!" Lucas exclaimed.

I giggled. "I would've too, if I were in your shoes. Guess we both can be a little gullible, eh?"

He shrugged, probably trying to play it cool. "Yeah, I guess. Anyway, that explains how you found us so fast. Hey, our Poketches have IDs. Give me yours and I'll give you mine. That way, we can communicate with each other."

I nodded. "Okay. How do I know what my ID is?"

Lucas pointed to my screen. A little serial number was written there: 34501. Huh! Easy enough!

"Okay, I guess that's my number, then. How about yours?"

"Switch to the Communicator App. I'll register myself."

I pressed the buttons and accidentally scrolled past it. Thankfully, there was a button to go back, so I pressed that as well.

Lucas grinned. "You're lucky you got the latest model. Mine only goes forwards, so if I accidentally scroll past whatever, then I have to scroll all the way through the others again."

I winced. "Oh man, that's gotta be rough."

Lucas shrugged and nodded before entering himself. 32652. Cool!

"That's that now! We can communicate with each other from far away. And thus, this leads us to being able to split up temporarily," Lucas stated.

"Alright," I said. "So where will you go?"

"I'm gonna go check out the Pokemon Trainer School. I actually heard from some Trainers that a Trainer similar to Barry was there and thought you might wanna come along too, but if you don't, then--"

"Okay," I said. "It's been a little while since I've last seen Barry, so I'll go!"

Lucas nodded, suddenly avoiding my gaze. "Alright, then c'mon. Let's go."

Was something wrong?

I furrowed my eyebrows as I walked behind Lucas and came up to the Pokemon Trainer's School (which actually took us about twenty minutes to get to. I just needed to skip that part.).

Inside the school was a long hallway, branching off into three different rooms. The first was a general study hall area with basic Pokemon facts written on the chalkboard. The second was a lunch room and the third was a Pokemon battlefield (I knew that because despite the three identical doors, there were labels above them).

I walked into the study hall room first, Lucas lagging behind me somewhat. It turns out Barry was right there, studying the chalkboard! I never knew he liked learning about Pokemon! However, since other students were studying there, we had to be quiet.

"Hey, Barry!" I whispered. Barry turned around and blushed. "H-hey!" He grinned. "How've you been, Sylv?"

"Good," I told him. "I've been traveling with Lucas!"

Barry glanced at Lucas. After a moment, I think Barry somewhat... scowled? at him. I couldn't tell. But Lucas and Barry didn't seem to be hitting it off well. I wondered what was wrong.

"Uh, g-guys? Is something wrong?" I asked them.

Lucas and Barry both snapped out of it and glanced at me, faces tinted pink. "N-nothing," they said at once--but after they did, they sent each other dirty looks.

Okay, something was up.

"What's wrong?" I asked them.

"Nothing," Lucas repeated. "I'm just... happy you got reunited with Barry."

"Yeah, and it's cool that Lucas is your travel partner," Barry said, frowning.

I frowned too. "Something is wrong, but you won't tell me what. Maybe a Pokemon battle will do us all some good."

Lucas and Barry scowled at each other, eyes burning over something.

Oh boy. This would be a heated battle. Why'd I suggest this?! I'm a pacifist!"

"Pip lup."

'Smoooth.'

"Shush, Pip!"

------

Now we're at the battlefield. Lucas and Barry are fighting with Turtwig in front of Barry and Chimchar in front of Lucas. They both seem to be willing to give it their all. I'll be rooting for both of them, but I didn't know what they were battling over.

Man, why did I have to suggest this?

"You ready, Barry?!" Lucas yelled.

"More than ever!" Barry answered.

"Let's go!" they exclaimed.

"Chimchar, advance and use Ember!" Lucas commanded.

"Turtwig, dodge and use Withdraw!"

Chimchar ran forward at Turtwig, tilting its head upward and collecting heat before sending several little sparks of fire at Turtwig, who dodged easily and curled up into a ball, glowing green and raising its defenses.

"Keep attacking, Chimchar!"

"Keep Withdrawing!"

It continued just like that. Chimchar kept shooting fire at Turtwig, who kept resisting and resisting with more and more defense. Finally, Turtwig stopped glowing and allowed an Ember to hit him. He looked barely harmed.

"What?!" Lucas exclaimed.

"Withdraw raises defense!" I yelled to Lucas. "Best use strategy and catch it off guard!"

Lucas clenched his fists. His knuckles looked white! I worried for him.

Barry smirked. "Turtwig, use Absorb!"

Turtwig suddenly ran up to Chimchar, who was off-guard, and glowed bright green. Chimchar began to glow green too and started struggling, but then quickly became drained.

I winced. This battle didn't seem to be for fun. It was like there was a certain strong motivation.

What was it?!

The two kept battling fiercely. At some point, I began to get even MORE worried. I slowly inched closer to the battlefield.

"Chimchar, dodge!"

Chimchar landed in front of me.

"Turtwig, Razor Leaf!"

Chimchar dodged again, leaving Pip and I open to the Razor Leaf fire. Panicking, Pip and I quickly jumped out of the way, Pip firing a Bubble at some Razor Leaves that almost slashed through me.

Barry and Lucas quickly stopped battling, both gasping. "Sylvia! Are you alright?!" Lucas exclaimed.

"I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to almost hit you!" Barry apologized.

Pip landed on the ground while I held my heart, sighing a breath of relief. "W-why are you guys fighting?! I mean, I know I suggested a Pokemon battle, but I didn't think that you'd fight so intensely!" I paused, thinking back on it. "It... It kinda hurts to see you two fighting so much. Is there some way I can help?"

The two blushed, glancing at each other. "W-well, uh..." Both of them trailed off.

"If there's anything I can do to help, please tell me!"

They glanced at me again, blushing.

Barry began first. "We, er... We both like... this girl."

"B-back in Sandgem Town!" Lucas quickly added. "A-and Barry and I occasionally fight about her, but now that Barry has his own Pokemon, I can finally battle him--"

"--And we didn't know that it would become this fierce," Barry admitted, finishing their story.

"Well, you could've talked to me about it!" I exclaimed. "I can help you with girls!"

They both turned bright red. "But we both like the same girl," Lucas rebutted.

"Well, then let her choose," I told both of them. They came closer to me.

Lucas and Barry glanced at each other. Y'know, if I knew that they actually BOTH had a crush on ME back then, this would've probably been a less awkward conversation.

Yes, LESS. This was a SUPER-awkward conversation. And back then, I didn't see it at all.

Anyway, back to whatever this is.

Lucas hesitated. "Let... her choose? B-but she doesn't know we like her."

REEEEAALLY awkward.

"So, try to find a way to win her over subtly. After enough time passes, if you both ask her out and she accepts one of you, then I guess that's who gets to be with her. And if not, then no hard feelings," I told them.

This would've been AWESOME advice if we WEREN'T TALKING ABOUT ME!

Barry and Lucas glanced at each other and grinned, shaking hands. "May the best man win!" Barry exclaimed, as though they were competing in a tournament.

Lucas nodded. "And afterward, like Sylv said, no hard feelings."

They shook.

I grinned happily. "Yay! No hard feelings!" I gently grabbed both of their wrists and pulled them into a group hug. They hesitated before hugging me--(and reluctantly each other)--back.

This will definitely come back to bite me. It already has. At least, at the time that I'm telling you this story. Not yet IN the story.

I'm getting off-topic real quick.

Anyway, they finished up their battle. It ended in a tie. We had fun and got ice cream at the end. After that, we separated from Barry, who left for Oreburgh City. We decided to stay behind just a little bit more to see if we could find anything else to do.

"So, you wanna go see the Poketch Company building now?" Lucas asked me.

"Sure!"

Sorry. This is really awkward and poorly written. My attention's been divided and I've been worse at writing while on vacation. Come a few days later and I'll be more consistent with this, I promise.
