The Shinobi World 101 (NARUTO AU): Section 4: Shinobi Nobility | Entry 1 : Konohagakure's Hyūga Clan |

by kyuukestu

kyuukestu A (soon to be) extensive record on one of Konoha's Four Noble clans, the Hyūga.
Description

The Hyūga clan is one of the four Noble clans of Konohagakure, the village hidden in the leaves, alongside the Uchiha, Aburame and Akimichi clans. The combination of their Kekkei Genkai, the Byakugan, and their Hiden, the gentle fist, ensures that all members of the clan are proficient in taijutsu. The Hyūga have the innate ability to wield chakra from all the chakra points in their body and are natural adepts at chakra control.

Clan Attitude

As one of the four Noble Clans of Konohagakure, the Hyuga are an extremely prideful bunch, perhaps even the most prideful in the village, and style themselves as such.

Loyal to their village, and dutiful to the point of being somewhat self-sacrificing, the Hyuga are a proud and strict people. Imposing stringent rules and regulations within the Clan itself, the Hyuga foster an attitude of hard work and dilligence, to an almost brutal exent, that shows in their training rituals. They readily act with their own interpretation of Noblesse Oblige, and care greatly about their reputation. The name of the clan means, 'Place under the Sun'.

Combat Style

Hyuga are known to excell at taijutsu and chakra control, particularly their usage of their Hiden, the Gentle fist. Often performed with or without a nature tranformation, the Gentle fist is a mostly Close-Quarters-Combat style which grants limited ability for mid and long ranged attacks. Generally, the Fighting style involves light percise hits and deft hands and impeccable footwork, however, Hyuga have applied their own styles to the gentle fist leading to variants of the Hiden technique.

Kekkei Genkai (Byakugan)

The Byakugan, also called the 'All-seeing White Eye', grants the user a near 360º diameter field of vision, with one blind spot at the back of the neck above the first thoracic vertebra. In total, users of the Byakugan have 359º diameter field of vision. The range of this vision varies between users dependent on the innate strength of their Byakugan, chakra potency, age, and training. In it's most underdeveloped forms, the Byakugan has a range of merely several meters, while more powerful and mature Byakugan can have a range of tens of kilometers.

The Byakugan's vision can penetrate through any solid objects or obstructions, and remains unaffected by blinding interferences, however, certain barriers or seals may distort the Byakugan's perception. The Byakugan is able to follow high-speed movements as well as an opponent's actions, allowing the user to predict and better react to them. When combined with their wide field of vision and range, it is difficult, if not nigh impossible to escape from the Byakugan through normal means.

The Byakugan also carries several auxillary abilities, such as the magnification, and the ability to see Infrared light and thereby granting it's users heat-decting vision. It can determine a target's elemental affinies for chakra, and discern whether or not they can even mold chakra.

The Byakugan allows chakra to be percieved, visually, to the highest degree among dojutsu. It can identify where a person's charka signature stems from, and also discertain certain types of clones from each other, such as clones produced by the clone technique. It can observe the flow and movement of chakra within and around the 361 Tenketsu (chakra points) and the chakra pathway system, and also detect whether genjutsu is being cast on the user or a target.

Prolonged or excessive usage of the Byakugan causes eye strain severe enough to leave the user temporarily blinded. The Byakugan is known to automatically activate should the wielder feel particalarly stressed from a situation.

Hiden Technique (Gentle Fist)

The gentle fist is a Hand-to-Hand fighting style devised around the Hyuga's innate ability to wield chakra from all 361 chakra points, and the visual acuity of the Byakugan. By using a surgically precise amount of chakra, and injecting it into their opponent through their strikes, practicitioners of the genlte fist are able to deliver damage to the opponents chakra points and chakra pathway system. However, because the chakra pathwar system is delicately intertwined around the vital organs, the gentle fist is capable of dealing damage to the opponents internals through the slightest tap or graze, hence it's moniker, the Gentle Fist.

Through the Gentle Fist, and aided by the Byakugan, a practitioner is able to force open or seal shut the chakra points either enhancing or restricting chakra flow and one's ability to wield ninjutsu. This seal can however, be overpowered through the introduction of an external source of chakra.

The Gentle-fist excels at dealing with chakra-based substances, as by precisely locating the weakest link within a substance and targeting it through their own chakra ministrations, users are able to destory certain chakra based substances. This maneuver however, is prone to failed against chakra-based substances of a certain consistency that manifest in fully physical form, and substances that are far too thick to be pierced by the user's fingers. However, when combined with their ability to expell chakra from all 361 tenketsu, users of the Gentle fist are granted an near-immunity to binds made from chakra-based substances.

Internal Structure

The Hyūga clan has many branches, and the branch of the current head of the clan is recognized as the Main Branch. The distinction between the branches is minimal, however, the main branch will usually be the branch which represents the clan as a whole during interactions with external parties. The clan is structured through a form of meritocracy, where positions in the clan are decided based on the talent, effort, and ability shown by each individual among numerous criteria which vary depending on the position. The Position of Clan head, for example, requires not only strength but foresight and an agile mind.

Within the clan are four (4) Factions which are based on the Four holy beasts and cardinal points, The Vermillion Bird (South), White Tiger (West), Azure Dragon (East), and Black Turtle (North). Each faction is stationed at the cardinal point respective of their holy beast, and each faction focuses on different things.

Clan Grounds

The clan is divided into 5 districts, the 4 districts which house the 4 factions, and the central district which acts as a communal hub for the clan. The central district is the largest district and occupies the vast majority of the land the Hyūga sit on. It has most of the important buildings such as the Clan Hall, Main Training halls, most of the residential areas, reception halls, etc.

The architecture in the clan is primarily composed of wooden structures on stilts with an oriental flavor to them. Buildings which are required to be sturdy, such as training halls, are usually wide, single floor structures with reinforced wood, their purpose is for Taijutsu practice and light spars only, as anything more could damage the structure of the building. A more intense battle with the possibility of structural damage would instead be held at a training field, rather than a training hall. Residential buildings range from one (1) to three (3) stories in height depending on the size of the family living there, and more public structures like the clan hall are generally multi-storied. Access to certain areas within the clan is restricted even to the clan’s members unless they meet the appropriate requirements which can consist of rank, position or otherwise.

Protective Measures

As the Byakugan is a highly coveted Kekkei Genkai, a seal is placed on all members from the day they awaken their Byakugan. The location of the seal is free for the individual to choose, but it is recommended that it be placed somewhere where it will be hidden from view. The seal with react immediately upon death and destroy their Byakugan to prevent leaking of the Kekkei Genkai. There is, however, a mechanism within the seal that allows the user to delay the destruction of their Byakugan for up to an hour, this method is taught to every single clan member and is generally only performed upon a natural death. The seal is placed by a small group of sealing specialists within the Vermillion bird faction, who are the only ones who are aware of the process required to activate or deactivate the seal. In dire situations, such as risk of their eyes being stolen in combat, the seal can be activated manually destroying the user's Byakugan. In especially rare occasions, the seal will be activated remotely.

Factions

Factions account for the divisions of power within the clan, and also suppliment it's internal structure. Factions generally specialize in specific jobs, skills and fighting styles which will then be passed on to their respective members. At the surface level, the clans provide techniques which they're willing to teach to all members with the willingness to learn -even members whose origins lie outside the Hyuga clan. At this basic level, the faction provides its member with minor advice and basic lessons on the importance of the core values of their ttrade or craft, however, teaching will not be in-depth, and the faction will generally not pass on any advanced techniques. These members of the faction are called ‘outer members/disciples/students’.

The classification of disciples within the Factions is denoted by;

    • Outer

    • Inner

    • Core

    • Sensei
and the Sensei category is further divided into;

    • Normal

    • Legacy
The Azure Dragon faction (Eastern District), are known within the clan for their flowing combat style which weaves a web of deflects and counters in a smooth motion reminiscent of the serpentine body of an eastern dragon; Notable members of this faction include Hinagiku Hyūga, the current Matriarch. The Azure dragon represents the east in oriental tradition, and thus make their place in the eastern district of the clan. Their directional opposite, the White Tiger faction (Western District), focuses on a more direct and ferocious fighting style which takes charge with offense as the best defense; Notable members of this faction include Furījia Hyūga, an Heiress candidate.

The Vermillion Bird faction (Southern District) doesn’t focus on combat styles, but rather on training more supportive roles such as medical ninja, Attendants, Scouts, or other logistic-type roles; Notable members of this faction include Rakūsupā Hyūga. The final faction, the Black Turtle, much to their namesake practice a defensive battle style, focusing on hunkering down and withstanding of otherwise dispersing attacks and are responsible for defending the clan.

Members are free to choose their own faction, and even switch between factions at their will, however, this isn’t advised as becoming a mediocre ‘jack-of-all-trades’ is frowned upon.

Azure Dragon Faction

Though what the Azure Dragon Faction practices would be described as a free-flowing fighting style with flexibility and mobility as pivotal or key aspects, their fighting styles revolve around nin-taijutsu, which combines the visual acuity of the Byakugan, with the precise, accurate and consecutive strikes of the gentle fist and the; sharpness and free-flowing nature of wind chakra, the density and power of earth natured chakra, the flexibility and resilience of water natured chakra, the shocking speed and numbing sensation of lightning natured chakra, or the explosive power of fire natured chakra. Because this fighting style requires usage of the Byakugan in combination with the gentle fist, it is generally not taught to outsides. Exceptions however, can be made, and a modified version of the faction techniques can be passed onto those the upper echelon of the faction find worthy. Generally, those deemed worth are allies of the Hyuga clan, and are either loyal or share a mutually beneficial relationship with the clan.

Beyond the aforementioned ‘inner’ level, are the ‘core’ members of the faction who have mastered at least one or multiple of the elemental nintaijutsu styles. From hence forth the members are privy to some of the faction’s hiden-level techniques, which combine nintaijutsu with the gentle fist to devastating effect. Members of the core level of this faction are generally Jonin level or higher in strength and skill due to the sheer level of chakra control required to perform any of the faction’s techniques with controlled output. After this level the faction stops teaching its members ‘strict and structured’ techniques, and instead promotes experimentation and research into the creation of a personal fighting style suited best to the users’ chakra natures and capabilities.

When one has succeeded in creating a personalized fighting style, or modifying an existing style to better fit their own needs, they are promoted from the level of ‘disciple’ and instead act as elders or sensei within the faction. Even between the Sensei, there is a distinct difference between modifying an existing combat style, and contributing to the clan by creating an entirely new style. Those who create entirely new styles are dubbed as the ‘Legacy Echelon’, and are able to pass down their own unique style, or ‘Legacy’, among the clan. Legacy Echelon sensei’s are rare but not extremely so, but generally, those with the exact compatibilities to master their styles are equally, if not even rarer than the teachers.

For example, the current Clan Leader Hinagiku, is a Legacy Sensei whose fighting style combines Wind, Earth and Water natured chakras. Apart for the chakra requirements, a user of her style must have a lithe and flexible body capable of simulating the whipping, rippling and wave-like motions that are incorporated into her strikes. Given that one has matched the requirements for both chakra nature and body type, they must also have the required level of chakra control need for the deft switches between chakra natures that supplement her style, and an intimate familiarity with ejecting chakra from locations other than one’s hands and feet. When all these factors are added up, the number of people capable of inheriting her style are small, and even that small group would be filtered through the critical lens of the person in question.

Between Legacies, there are distinctions, with a completed Legacy being held in the highest regard. A completed legacy is classified as a Hiden, and is both creative and effectively usable in battle. Below a completed legacy is a nascent legacy, which while creative may not be feasible in battle due to absurd requirements, or inefficient chakra consumption of the technique, or any number of factors which make it an unsustainable or inefficient method of combat. These nascent legacies may even be partially completed or even usable up to a certain point, but the completed technique is either not defined enough to achieve the rank of hiden, or has too many drawbacks and may be classified as forbidden. Records of these legacies are kept more for the value of information and the creative thought process of the creator rather than any use the actually technique may have. They are essentially ‘creative failures’, which stimulate the thought process and nothing more.

Sensei level figures compose the highest level of power within the faction in terms of authority and combat power, and while the Legacy teachers don’t usually take on personal students, they assist the regular teachers in providing advice and insight to the younger generation of the clan, using their own styles as reference points to widen the horizons of the students.
