... Why did Microsoft build a brick? God, they seem to be taking the portable thing to their doorway too. Shame it'll probably be several hundred pounds/dollars out of my price range.

It's a tablet PC. To counteract the as yet unannounced but impending Apple one.
It's NOT Microsoft's equivilent of the DS or PSP and never will be. Just because it can play games doesn't mean it's a gaming machine.

Even if I am slightly intrigued by the capabilities of that thing, it's a hideous design. The original DS looks like a work of art compared to that fugly thing.
Anyways, Alex is right. It isn't a handheld gaming system. It's a mini-PC that can play games, and I can't imagine that it'd play them well either. From the looks of things it doesn't have a decent control pad
