Private/Closed The Start of a Friendship

Alrighty... we’re headed a few years back, when it all began. A few of you know of Renz and Kathren’s exploits... but how did it all begin? Let’s find out!

Malie City, Alola, (Shopping district)

Renz Flintrock sat at the front desk of his parents’ store. His dad had left early that morning, to search for items to sell in the shop, and his mom was in the back sorting though some of dad’s recent finds. Renz would have liked to go with his dad, but he was needed at the shop...

His Gible snoozed on the counter. The Pokémon had hatched recently, so it still needed a lot of sleep... Renz watched the little Pokémon snooze as he leaned back in his chair and waited. The shop wasn’t busy... he could easily have gone along with dad...

Kathren was new to Alola. Coming from Johto, then Sinnoh and even Kalos for a bit. Her lovable Quagsire, Derp Lord, followed her around in Malie City. Derp Lord tried to go the other way, but Kathren rolled her eyes and grabbed the Quagsire's and and led him through the city. "We are looking for a store. So then we can get some supplies. Think you can help me Derp Lord?" she said to the Water-Fish-Pokemon. Derp Lord opened his huge mouth and let out a "Quag!" Kathren chuckled. She entered an item shop and saw a boy about her age sitting at the front desk. A Gibble slept on the counter. She would keep their interaction business casual, she decided. She started to browse the shop, Derp Lord following her. Every once in a while she warned him not to touch something like he kept on forgetting.

Renz stopped slouching in his chair and nodded as the person entered the shop.

“Let me know if you need help finding anything.”

The door on the bell had chimed as the girl and her Quagsire had entered the shop, and this had woken up Gible. The land shark had jumped down from the counter, and now walked up to the Quagsire.

“Gib. Gible Gible Gible Gible Gib Gib Gib.”

He waved his tiny hand in greeting.

Derp Lord opened his mouth wide, but nothing came out. Kathren looked behind her and saw the Gibble. She glanced over at the person at the counter to make sure he wasn't watching before she even made an attempt to pet the Gibble. Derp Lord looked around and gave a huge "Quag!"

The Gible gave the Quagsire a toothy grin, and nuzzled into the pets offered by the girl.

“Gib Gib Gib Gib.

At the sound of the massive QUAG, Gible grinned again and waved his arms. Renz’s attention was also attracted by the QUAG, and he smiled as he saw how much Gible was enjoying himself.

Kathren also smiled while she petted the Gibble. However, when she saw that the person at the cash register was watching her, or rather her Quagsire, she stood up and fake coughed into her fist. She then went back to browsing. She didn't really enter the area for catching Pokemon better but stayed where held items were kept, after she found them at least. However, Derp Lord stayed near Gibble and looked at him absent-mindedly. Kathren looked back at the Quagsire and sighed. She would get her Quagsire to follow her again after she got done looking, and maybe buying something.

"Quag!" Derp Lord said to the Gibble. Quagsires were not known for their interesting conversations. Kathren shook her head at her Pokemon then looked at the person at the cash register. "Thanks," she said, "But one that was a fake cough. And two, you say bless you when people sneeze." She gave a small smile but didn't show it. She was glad he had some manners, that would make this quick stop much more enjoyable. Better than some of her other visits to town.

Kathren stifled her giggles at the sleeping Pokemon and went back to browsing. When her back was turned to him, she smiled. Derp Lord was now wandering the store, without Kathren. She turned around to look at the blue Pokemon, but he was no longer there. "Stupid," she muttered under her breath before searching for the Quagsire. Derp Lord was now trying to touch stuff, something he was told not to do when they first entered. He wasn't the most graceful.

Luckily the only thing that ended up knocked over was a box of normal Pokéballs. Even though the shop carried a lot of rare and specialty items, they still kept standard items in stock. The Pokéballs littered the floor, and Renz sighed. He walked over to the spill and began picking up Pokéballs and putting them back in their box.

Kathren walked over to her Pokemon and boy that was about her age. "So sorry, I should have not let my eyes off of him, at all. If anything broke, I'll pay for it," she said to him. She glanced back at Derp Lord, who was looking up at her with a smile. She sighed angerly at him and returned her blue partner. She looked at the Pokeball that the Quagsire was now in. "I'll let you back out when we are not around breakables." She then knelt down to help out the worker. It was not fair that he would have to work harder due to her mistake.

“It’s fine. This one has a bit of a knick, but that’s no big deal. Oh, it’s okay, I got this.”

He said as the girl knelt down to help. He finished putting the Pokéballs back in the tray, and then put the tray on the shelf.

“We’ve had worse. Once, my Dad’s Stoutland was sleeping behind the counter, and a trainer came into the store with a Liepard... it wasn’t pretty.”

He grinned. It was funny to remember, now that it was history... but it hadn’t been funny at the time. That had been a LOT of cleaning.

Kathren nodded. "Again, I am sorry. A trainer should take full responsibility for any negative thing their Pokemon does. Every positive thing must be split in two, the trainer getting less credit than their Pokemon," she said as she stood up. Kathren didn't really like having conversations, and the story sounded like one that was shared between two friends, not complete strangers.

Renz was about to say something when there came a call from the back.

“Renz, please come here! Look at this!”

“Coming, Mom!- I’ll be back in a minute, just let me know when you have what you want.”

Renz walked into the back of the store, where his mom was sorting through Dad’s recent finds. She was holding up a piece of what looked like Amber.

“Isn’t it so pretty, Renz?”

“Yeah, it is nice.”

“Do you know what it is?”

“A gemstone?”

“It’s a piece of amber, and some scientists have been able to revive similar pieces into Pokémon!”

“That is COOL!”

“You can see it again later, but YOU need to get back to the counter.”

“‘Kay, Mom.”

Renz walked back into the main shop, and back towards the front counter.

While the worker at the store was in the back, Kathren let out one of her smarter Pokemon, Star the Starly. The little black, white and grey bird chirped and flew on Kathren's shoulder while her trainer petted her breast feathers. The two went back to the items and looked again until Kathren saw a white scarf. She picked it up out of curiosity. It felt smooth and soft. She held it up for Star to see better. The small bird chirped in approval. "Alrighty then, we are getting the scarf."

Renz sat back down at the front desk. Meanwhile, Gible had woken up upon the noise of a Pokéball opening and releasing a Pokémon. He toddled over to the girl and waved.

“Gib! Gib-ble!”

He looked curiously at the Starly. He hadn’t seen a Pokémon like this before... but of course, he hadn’t seen most kinds of Pokémon.

Star stayed on Kathren's shoulder chirped, "Starly!" while she flapped her wings a bit. Kathren glanced at Star. "Calm down girl," she told the bird, "he's not going to bite your wings." The Starling-Pokemon chirped some more, this time much calmer. Kathren walked up to the counter. "Please don't do the counter joke. Also, I would like this Silk Scarf, please," she said to him, handing over the white cloth.

Renz took the cloth. He set it down on the counter, looked at something beneath the counter, and then glanced over towards on of the shelves.

“Silk Scarf, 150 pokébucks. Would you like a bag?”

He pulled out a bag as he spoke, ready to put the scarf inside if she wanted the bag.

“That Starly is cute, by the way.”

Kathren already had her wallet out. "No, that won't be necessary, and thanks. Her name is Star." Star puffed out her chest at the compliment, showing off her proud side. Kathren shook her head and paid for the scarf. "Thank you very much," she said as she waited for the prosses to go through. Star flew onto the counter and watched Renz.

“Thank you. It was nice meeting you, come again soon!”

He handed her the Silk Scarf and smiled. It was hard to tell how much of that was courtesy and just the thing you say when someone made a purchase, and how much was otherwise. Gible had walked behind the counter, and Renz picked him up and began tickling him.

Kathren nodded as she took the silk scarf that fitted the Starly. "You too," she said before going to the door and leaving. He seemed nice, but appearances could only bring one so far. Although this kindness could be from working in that field. She reminded herself that people were all pretending to be something that they are not, even she was. She reminded herself that could be a cover-up for him. She walked though Malie City, trying to find the first route that would bring her along. She didn't really care to do the Island Challange, it seemed like a waste of time. Much like she didn't really do any gyms. She never needed to. All she liked doing was seeing the sights with her Pokemon, but lately, she has taken more interest in battling. One of the reasons she got Star the Silk Scarf. Another was she looked cute in it.

Renz hung around the counter lazily for a few moments before more customers began flooding in. He lost track of time, and before he knew it his dad was home. He hadn’t brought back much today, but he had had a good time, and he told Renz about the trip as they ate dinner. Renz helped out a bit more before going to bed, thinking about the day and the treasures his dad had brought back with him.

Kathren decided that it would be better to stay the night in Malie City. Besides, she wanted to see these so-called Malie Gardens. They said that that they had a building based off of the Bell Tower. She would be the judge of that. She took her homeland very seriously. She checked in at the hotel for the night and thought about how different Alola was from Johto. Even if Malie City was based on her home region.

The next morning Kathren got up and looked around her. She was going to visit the Malie Gardens. She hoped the rumors were true, and it wasn't some sort of knock-off. She left the hotel, Derp Lord behind her and went to look for the garden. She held his hand, so then he wouldn't get lost in the city. Eventually, She found the garden's gate and entered. She had to admit that it was very pretty. The golden bridge took more of a Kantoan inspiration, but other than that it held to its promise. She walked around, enjoying the sights, and feeling at home.

Meanwhile, Renz had woken up. A bit later than usual, but it was no big deal. He had planned to meet up with one of his friends today, but his mom had recieved a phone call saying that the friend wouldn’t be able to play. So, he had a relatively free day and nothing much to do. He scooped up Gible and walked out the door.

After a rather circuitous route through the city, Renz ended up in Malie Garden. He had stopped by the houses of various kids near his age, but none were available. In fact, quite a few of them had gone to face the Island Trials. So Renz entered Malie Gardens, and found a cool, shady spot under a tree to rest. It was also near a patch of sand, and Gible ran over to it and began playing.

Kathren walked along in the garden until she saw the boy from the counter from yesterday. She glanced at him for a little bit, then looked away. But Derp Lord had other ideas. He walked straight up to Gibble and opened his mouth wide, not making a sound. He then looked around him, forgetting why he was there.

Renz was completely blanked out, staring up into the leaves of the trees. Gible, however, was overjoyed to see the Quagsire.

“Ggyyyyiiiible Gible Gible Gible!”

The little land shark ran in circles, kicking up sand and thoroughly enjoying himself. He tried to get the Quagsire to roll around with him in the sand.

The Quagsire stared at Gibble blankly. He didn't really like the sand, he preferred the mud. The sand felt to gritty for the Quagsire. He went close to the water so then he could splash in the mud. Derp Lord turned and motioned for the Gibble to follow him to the mud.

Kathren looked behind her and saw that be beloved Quagsire wasn't there. She facepalmed. How could she let him out of her sight? He would run off if he found something more interesting than what was going on. That is why she needed to talk to him more, so then he would pay attention to her, not what was going on around him.

Gible followed Quagsire over to the muddy water. He gingerly dipped his foot in, winced a bit at first as he felt the water, but then felt the mud at the bottom. It wasn’t the same as sand, but it was still very pleasant. And so the Gible waded in and and started stirring up the mud and carrying little bits to the shallower part, so he wouldn’t drown.

Derp Lord submerged under the water, not worrying about needing to breathe. He was a Water-type meaning that he could breathe under the water. He started to swim without care, being happier than a Munchlax entering a pantry filled with food.

Kathren looked for her lost Pokemon. "Derp Lord! Where are you, buddy?! Please don't tell me you ran off to far!" she shouted to her friend. However the blue Pokemon didn't hear her, or he was unaware that his trainer was even shouting his name.

Renz was startled out of his daydreaming by the sound of a voice shouting. He sat up and looked around. He eventually figured out that the shouting was coming from a girl who looked kinda farmiliar... he stood up and walked her direction.

“Did you lose something?”

"Just my Quagsire," she said, not paying much attention to the person who confronted her. She looked around the area for a bit then turned to look somewhere else. She had to find Derp Lord. He was in a new region and with new people. No way could he feel at home here! He must have been terrified!

Derp Lord swam happily in the water, sometimes coming up to Gibble and splashing him. Then he would submerge himself once more. The Quagsire looked happy as he played in the water.

“Quagsire... hey, you were the one who bought the Silk Scarf, right? I’ll try and help you find your Quagsire.”

Renz grinned. That Quagsire... it seemed to always be up to some mischief.

Gible had made a small pile of mud in the shallow water, and was now soaking. He had a sharky grin on his face. He was a bit startled the first time Derp Lord splashed him, but from then on he was not surprised, and actually kind of enjoyed it.

"Yeah," she replied, "I did. And thanks. He will probably be around the water or some mud. He likes both of those things. Also, don't just call for him, look as well. Sometimes he doesn't hear people because he is interested in other things. Lastly, call out Derp Lord, that is his name. It is a long story that I don't want to share at the moment." She then brought out her Starly, who was wearing the Silk Scarf. Kathren gave the bird a look and the bird nodded, understanding what happened. It seemed as if this happened a lot.

“Okay. I think there’s a lake over that way, let’s start there.”

He pointed in the direction of the lake and began walking in that direction. He scanned around as he walked, keeping an eye out for a Quagsire. The park was a pretty place, with lots of green grass and towering trees.

Gible yawned. The land shark was very relaxed. He enjoyed sand a lot, but he felt like he had to play in it. But this mud just made want to relax.

"Thank you, again," She said as she walked towards the direction he pointed out. Star was also looking but from the sky. Three pairs of eyes could surely find the missing Quagsire unless he was submerged under the water. Kathren looked around, calling for her lost Pokemon.

Derp Lord got up to splash the Gibble again, but then saw he was trying to relax. The Water-Fish sunk back under the water and swam around some more. He saw the counter-person from the day before, but he failed to recognize him due to the water distorting everything above the waves and the fact he had a terrible memory.

Renz arrived near the edge of the lake. He was still looking for a Quagsire, so he didn’t see his own Pokémon buried in mud a few feet away. The land shark saw his trainer, but did not say anything yet. Then, about a minute later as Renz was about to turn away, Gible sneezed.

“Hey, buddy? Whatcha doin down there?”

Renz queried as he bent down near his Pokémon. Gible looked up, grinning.

“Have you seen that Quagsire from yesterday?”

“Gib.”

Gible pointed towards the water, but looked noncommittal.

Derp Lord popped out of the water, his arms outstretched. "Quag!" he shouted, wanting to give a hug to his new friend that he thought had to leave. Star landed on Renz's shoulder and nodded. This was the missing Quagsire. Kathren looked somewhere else within the lake area. She was worried about her missing Pokemon and wanted to make sure he was alright. He never tried to cause trouble, he just kept on forgetting things. She fidgeted with her jacket zipper in worry.

“Gah!”

Renz shouted and almost fell over as Derp Lord popped up in front of him. Gible giggled. Once he had recovered, Renz reached slowly up to Star.

“Hey. You’re Star, right? Can you go find your trainer? I’ll keep an eye on the Quagsire.”

He beaconed the Quagsire to come to him.

“Hey, Derp Lord, your trainer is looking for you. Can you come here?”

Gible nodded towards Quagsire.

Star nodded and flew off to her trainer. She flew as fast as she could. The Starly knew that the boy would have trouble with Derp Lord unless he used his name. Otherwise, it would take the Quagsire a while to understand that he was given orders. The Starly shook her head as she lowered herself due to the fact she spotted her trainer.

Derp Lord looked at Renz and gave a loud "Quag!" as he walked over. He tried rubbed up against the boy for attention due to the fact he knew his name. Anyone who knew his name tended to pat him in some way. If he did rub up against Renz, then it would be slimy for the boy.
