Deus Ex Machina

Rex

Resident Furry
This is an idea I've been working on with a number of people on GTS+, but it's sort of competing with a pair of ideas, and if it loses I want to be able to continue it elsewhere. So, I thought at the very least I would see what sort of interest I could gather for it here. If I get a positive responce, I'll set it up here as well. If not, no harm no foul.

The premise is:
It’s an Industrial world that Pokemon have developed. Delving into arcane secrets and ancient human knowledge, certain species of Pokemon have risen to become the dominant species on the planet. Combining human Magic and Alchemy with Technology, Magitek has been developed. No region could possibly claim to be more ahead in the advance of knowledge then the Velit Confederation.

In the capital city of Kelvos, a new technology is being developed. Called Deus Machinae, if it is completed Velit will have control of the entire world’s Magitek. Hearing of this development, the world as a whole have come together and declared war on Velit.

Progress is slow, however. The gears of Government are not quick to move, and those that have pushed forces into Velit have found themselves stalled by the region’s harsh terrain and powerful defenses. Responding to this crisis, a terrorist group, the Black Ops Gang, have risen to power. They have set it upon themselves to take Kelvos and steal or destroy Deus Machinae.

All is not well, however. There are only weeks until Deus Machinae is completed, and having a terrorist group take the machine is no better then leaving it to Velit. The armies of the world are slow to move, but they are the only hope the world has for a peaceful future. The clock is ticking, and now sides must be taken.

---

Obviously this is something of a fantasy world involving Pokemon, the premise is similar to Dungeon Punk, a summary of which can be found: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DungeonPunk. There would be no legendary Pokemon, and most others would be divided into classes, with certain Pokemon above rank. These ranks are:

1. Bipedal Pokemon with hand-like appendages (i.e. Infernape & Dusknoir) - Most dominant species because of their ease with holding tools and items.
2. Bipedal Pokemon with Paws or Talons (i.e. Buizel & Blaziken) - Second most dominant species, able to use and hold tools and items with little training and slight difficulty.
3. Quadrupedal Pokemon with ability to function on hind legs (i.e. Linoone & Quilava) - Third most dominant, able to train themselves to stand and walk on hind legs and work tools and items with some difficulty.
4. Bipedal Pokemon with other forelimb types (i.e. Scizor & Scyther) - Fourth most dominant, may be able to use tools. More likely to find work in security.
5. Large Quadrupedal Pokemon (i.e. Torterra & Venasaur) - Fifth most dominant, used as pack animals and treated well.
6. Large Birds (i.e. Pidgeot & Swellow) - Sixth most dominant, used as messengers and treated well.
7. Small Quadrupedal Pokemon (i.e. Manectric & Houndour) - Seventh most dominant, used as cheap security.
8. Fish (i.e. Magikarp & Finneon) - Eighth most dominant, used for food.
9. Farm animals (i.e. Miltank & small birds) - Ninth most dominant, farmed and eaten, or farmed for producing food.
10. Others (i.e. Ghastly & Unown) - The trash of society who can do little to nothing to help and are treated badly in return.

Unranked Pokemon would be those that are extremely powerful, like Pseudos and Gyarados, and Pokemon that have special abilities of some sort, like Ninetales and Ditto.

Other ideas were to have monsters, and weapons to kill them with. The weapons would be your standard Final Fantasy-esc. affair, ranging the gauntlet from medieval to modern. That's all that's really been thought out thus far. I suppose the things I should be asking is if anyone happens to be interested, and if there are any ideas that they want to contribute or modify.

---EDIT---

Factions, for the most part, will be split into four groups. One is Velit's Military, the second is the World's combined military, the third is Velit's citizens, and the fourth is the Black Ops Gang. For the most part, I will run the Black Ops Gang, as well as the militaries unless others wish for them.

As of now, Karu has control of Velit's NPC military forces.
I control the Black Ops Gang's NPCs.
Brendan controls the World's Military NPCs.

The Black Ops Gang currently consists of:

Samuel (Mienshao) - Head Mechanic
Kevin (Sableye) - Accountant
Andrew (Shiny Mienfoo) - Mechanic
Dodger (Dewott) - Smuggler
Drust (Gallade) - Mercenary
Fulton (Swellow) - Messenger

The Velit Confederation's Military current consists of:
Karu (Marowak) - Magitek Knight
Biggs (Blaziken) - Magitek Soldier
Wedge (Swampert) - Magitek Soldier
Seth (Buizel) - Kelvos Militia Member
Andre (Linoone) - Kelvos Militia Member
Alexander (Charmeleon) - Explosives Expert
Cid (Blaziken) - Mechanic
Shane (Zoroark) - Kelvos Militia Division Leader
Dylan (Dewott) - Kelvos Militia Member
Lysander (Umbreon) - Lieutenant
Decard (Poliwrath) - Captain

Foreign Military members currently consist of:

Isolde (Bisharp) - Soldier

Citizens:
Vanessa (Ambipom)

Because of things that have been happening recently, I feel the need to keep track of everyone who has shown interest and is willing, or has, joined.

Accepted people:
- Carmen (Characters Complete)
- Mr. RMA (Characters Complete)
- Karu (Characters Complete)
- Brendan (Characters Complete)
- Belle (Characters Incomplete)
- Tailon (Characters Complete)
- Chadwyck (Characters Complete)

On top of this, there are people who were in the RP, but as of now have either left or been booted out. Those people are:
- Virgil (Unable to Continue)
- Blazi (Unheard from)
- Rain (Left the Forum)
- Tun (Dropped out)

Because of the amount of people that have shown interest, and the amount currently in the RP, entrance has been restricted to invitation only. The people with an invitation are free to join if they wish, but there is no pressure on them to do so.
The people with a current invitation are:
- RX
- Toru
- SirRed

I'd be interested in joining with an Arcanine and Ambipom~

I really like this idea because we haven't seen anything like it on 'Charms. I'm not sure what side I'd be on though so I'll be thinking that over...

Mr.RMA

Magearna before it was cool
I'd definitely like to join in. Probably gonna go with a Gallade, which I assume is rank 4 due to its blade like appendages, but he still sorta has hands, so I'm not quite sure where you would place him for certain.

I'll most likely join as a normal civilian, but if a certain faction needs more people, I'll switch.

EDIT: So the chat has informed me that it's rank 2. Good to have confirmation on that.

Atma

Formerly Karu
Will join as a Marowak wielding a sword instead of a bone mace and a straight 'scar' down the eye of his skull helm. Due to previous talks I'll serve as a Magitek Knight for Velit with NPC control. Have control over Velit army.

Squad:

Magitek Knight - Karu - Marowak
Magitek Soldier - Biggs - Blaziken
Magitek Soldier - Wedge - Swampert

At first, I wasn't too sure about this idea, because it was giving pokemon magic, something that is mostly rendered redundant by pokemon attacks, ablilties, and such. Then I thought about it, and I decided that perhaps this could actually work one way or another. So I think I'll give this a shot and start my debut into the 5th generation with a trio of agents that work for one of the militaries that have stood against the growing threat. They successfully infiltrate Keivos through digging all the way under the harsh terrain and defenses surrounding the city. They came weeks ahead of the main army to map the city for the upcoming invasion, especially the location of the Deus Machinae.

Blade - Grovyle - Espionage Specialist - De Facto leader, and most suited for sneaking around where he's not supposed to be. Usually very quiet around anyone other than his teammates
Dozer - Excadrill - Infiltrator/Negotiator - A usually friendly and humorous titan, he ironically claims the title as negotiator for his excellence in negotiation, manipulation, and bartering
Chip - Patrat - Mad Scientist Mechanic - Always muttering to himself, or expressing his feelings to those around him. The only time he would remain silent would be if there was a chance of being heard by unwanted ears

Resident Furry
Alright, I'm feeling good about the number of people that have shown interest, so I'll definitely post the RP here. First, there are a few things I'd want to work out there. Anyone who wants to post characters can continue to do so, but I'm going to switch the topic a bit. There are three things I want to work out, and see everyone's opinion on. Those are:
1.) The level of Technology
2.) The type of Weapons
3.) The Presence of Monsters

How I had worked it out, technology, as Magitek, would parallel our modern world's in many ways. Airships would fly the skies in place of helicopters and planes. These airships would be something akin to steam liners, powered by Fire Elementals and Magicite. Velit would have a train system as well, the Lightning Rail. The trains would resemble steam engines, but be powered by electricity on the rails.

Magicite is the power source for most Magitek devices. It's an ore, mined from the mountains. Velit is very Magicite rich, which contributes to its extreme growth technologically. As a Confederation, Velit is actually a group of sovereign states that are banded together by the exporting of said Magicite, as well as the issues of defense and transportation. Kelvos, the capital, is a district in the center of the region, something of a central government that creates laws that the other states ratify. Velit has a common currency, and each state shares language and culture with the rest. Borders are open between the states, and, until the discovery of Deus Machinae, the region had a strong immigration network.

Weapons, as stated previously, would be something akin to what's found in Final Fantasy. Everything from firearms to swords would be locatable. Magic would be amplified through said weapons, with each weapon best suited to a specific element of magic. Pure magic is only available to the Unranked Pokemon, as well as those of ranks 1-4, in increasingly diminishing qualities and quantities.

Mix the wrong kind of stupid with the right kind of equipment and the wrong kind of luck, and you never know what you might get. This is the basis for the Monsters, early experiments into Magitek and Magicite that all ended in horrendous failure. Ruins of old cities dot the entire world, places where monsters were created and overran. Attempts to modify these creatures for biological warfare all end in failure, with most nations simply doing what they can to make sure the creatures don't overwhelm their populace.

Being very Magicite rich, Velit is also extremely Monster prone. This was another reason for the adoption of a Confederacy. Some of the flatter parts of the region are home to areas where monster raids are increasingly common. Cities are surrounded by walls, though when they are breached it can take weeks if not months to reclaim the lost territory and clean of the mess. Recently, the TRAUMA Automated Defense System has gone online, and many of the invading forces find themselves stalled by the gigantic mechanical wonders. Despite the fact that they were originally built to defend cities from monsters, they are easily turned against the invaders, and are one of the biggest factors contributing to the stalled war effort.

so I'll probably be joining this with a Marshtomp person. She might be an engineer or she might be something else, but ... she will be a Marshtomp. And she will have a hat.

The technology sounds reeeaally cool. I really like the fact that instead of pure engineering and science stuff's powered with magic ^^ I know that's generally the Dungeon Punk basis, but I still think it's cool as heck and we should use it :3

The Magicite sounds good too. And the weapons! I do like the freedom we have with the weapons, and the magic in them sounds sweet too c:

It would probably be best to have monsters, I mean, it would give us something to do when we're not battling each other, right? :D but yeah, I'm for the idea of monsters. Just ... what sort of monsters would they be? Random huge scary-looking things or, like, mutated PokeMon?

I am very much looking forward to seeing what everyone else has to say and stuff ♥ yepyep!

Mr.RMA

Magearna before it was cool
Ruins, eh? That would be perfect for my character, seeing how he's going to most likely study a lot on ancient history, archaeology and the like.

Like Tun, I'm also for the presence of monsters, seeing how that would definitely leave more options of conflict open for people to exploit. I'm fine with them being in whatever location seems best for the story, so their location and abundance is fine by me in whatever you decide, so long as they're somewhere.

This is Dungeon Punk based, so magic, magitek and technology in general is definitely a given. I think the amount and level of technology is best spread out among the different areas of the world, with the most advanced being around Velit, especially in places like Kelvos.

The variety of weapons sounds good too, as that would probably really help symbolize the dominance of the Pokemon that can handle such tools over the ones that can't, and also, the proficiency of those that can handle them better than others.

There's my two cents (Yay for old American idioms) on the subject. Definitely excited to see where all this goes.

Atma

Formerly Karu
Well actually Magitek is an FFVI product, but I definately agree with the concentration of tech etc. One thing to remember is the Black Ops need a base. Airship/Naval? It'd just be kinda fitting to the group or some crap =x

Rex

Resident Furry
Ah yes, Black Ops' Base of Operations. I was actually thinking something along the lines of http://www.irtc.org/ftp/pub/stills/2003 ... ndship.jpg. It's large enough to protect the gang from monsters and carry a number of troops, but small enough to negotiate the mountains.

And, actually Karu, you're mistaken. While Final Fantasy VI is the go-to and possibly most famous example of Magitek, it originated in the 1940s novella Magic, Inc. by Robert A. Heinlein.

Atma

Formerly Karu
Well dayum, thanks for the knowledge =o Also that looks fine. Of course I expect the cannons will be decimating. On-board pulse that knocks out magitek in a local area? It is supposed to be stealthy and stuff.

Rex

Resident Furry
Hm... It's possible, though a moving blackout would be suspicious. I might have it mess with sensors instead, cloaking the ship to radar and the like. This would leave defensive artillery and mapping technology blind to them, but still keep it visual to systems like TRAUMA.

I am thinking of having TRAUMA 'see' through a LIDAR system. Since it's a laser instead of a wave, the cloaking device wouldn't be able to block it.

Also, in responce to an earlier question, I'm thinking the Monsters for the most part would be mutated Pokemon and plant life.

Also, I've decided upon appearances for TRAUMA and Deus Machinae.
TRAUMA looks like: http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb2 ... FFVIII.jpg If it wasn't obvious to any Final Fantasy fan from the start.
TRAUMA has a prototype version as well, called DROMA, these were produced in small qualities for many of the inner cities, and are still functional. Obviously, they look like: http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb2 ... FFVIII.jpg
Finally, Deus Machinae looks like: http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb2 ... eType8.jpg

I'd also be interested in joining this. It sounds pretty interesting and I do enjoy magitek and Final Fantasy in general >>;

I've got absolutely no clue what I'll be joining as... I'll have to think about that more ^^;

As far as the Monsters and Weapons go: I like the idea of monsters because, as you pointed out, it makes sense that in early experiments with magicite and magitek, something went horribly awry and monsters were created from the mistakes. And the diversity of weapons is good too, I may actually have a character use a gun since I'm always far too obsessed with swordsman >>;

Anyway, I'm interested in joining, and I'll probably join on some military side. Methinks Velit, since that sounds fun.

I'm super interested, I really like the idea of this RP and I've got an awesome character planned.

She is going to be a bard Jynx, a citizen of Velit. Think of her as one of those crazy homeless people that sit on a street corner and go on and on about crazy things that don't make sense..like the end of the world. She will play a harp, which is made in part by magicite, and depending on what she plays it will have different effects (Ex: Sleep, confusion, silence). Instead of the usual dress a Jynx would wear, she wears a tattered hooded cloak.

She may or may not join a military side, I think she would need recruiting since she is crazy.

I'm joining, as some people might know.

I'm going to have a Lucario and a Cacturne who work in a team, as of how they're going to be involved in this whole mess is questionable. I might need help/ideas, so any will be welcome.

They attack using both regular attacks, and special weapons that they have modified for full usage. They both wear rings made of a certain magnetic magicite, on the right arm for Lucario and on both for Cacturne, and weapons with the same type on their belts. Lucario has a type of blade that attaches to the ring over his backhand, while Cacturne has two guns that attach to the rings via a bar on the guns. Cacturne can focus attacks through these (bullet seed etc.) for more accuracy.

But yeah, that's me joining. I'm still trying to think of a role (Traveling Mercenaries?)

I think I've largely figured out my characters. This will be under construction as I add more details to make them three dimensional characters.

BARE BONES

Vanessa is an Ambipom and is over all very optimistic because of her rank in society, and she is largely naive to the reality of Pokemon in lower ranks. She wields two pistols--one fires electrified bullets of magic that stun and injury on contact while the other fires frozen bullets of magic that flash freezes what it hits. She's extremely acrobatic which she uses to her advantage.

Elizabeth is an Arcanine whose optimism has taken a beating over the years by various prejudice and disappointment. Since she is not allowed to use magic, she has focused on her physical prowess, as such as is much faster and stronger than her opponent might guess initially.

Both Pokemon were best friends at one time, but they friendship is now strained and they're growing apart--the conflict has impacted them in different ways. Though they are both civilians (thus far), Vanessa and Elizabeth support opposing ideologies and neither can understand why the other has chosen it.

Magearna before it was cool
Okay, so after some work, I think I've got something decent enough to put up for my character. Hopefully it checks out alright.

Amparo - Gallade - Velit Citizen: Amparo is a Pokemon with heavy values towards formality and sophistication, two virtues he was raised to go by. He plays by the rules and makes sure to avoid confrontation whenever possible, though this isn't too difficult, as he spends most of his time alone, locked up in his small abode, studying a wide variety of subjects, most varying towards either combat research or archaeology, two topics that he has a considerable interest towards. When he does occasionally go out, he usually keeps away from other peoples' business unless he finds a legitimate reason to get involved, such cases usually consisting of someone causing some kind of trouble, especially if said trouble is a possible threat towards any innocent individuals.

He pays very little mind to his rank in the social structure, not really seeing it all that important, and actually gets pretty annoyed when he sees higher ranks hassle lower ranks for very little reason. Though he is a rank 2, he doesn't have very much skill in magic, knowing a spell or two, but nothing of significant power.

His loyalties don't lie towards either side in the current conflict for the time being, as, though he may have suspicions over what Velit’s intentions with this Deus Machinae and the world’s magitek are, he rarely uses any magitek himself, and doesn’t see what the immediate threat really is, thus not finding reason to support the efforts of the world armies. He also has very little, if any, respect towards the Black Ops, believing them to be nothing but dishonorable scoundrels devoid of dignity, working to their own selfish ends.

His clothing consists of a black shirt with a red leather vest, red breeks, brown loafers, and a leather outback hat. He wields two knives, the handles formatted to suit his hand structure.

Hmmm, looking at the Pokemon rankings makes me wonder what it would be like to play a Spiritomb, named Ruwan. He'll probably be slightly corrupt, hating the pecking order which Pokemon have and wants to punish those on top. To get around the fact he's just a presence attached to a rock, he will sometimes possess Pokemon that pick up his Odd Keystone. At the moment, his current 'vessel' is a female Flygon named Melissa, although I'm debating over whether she will have allowed Ruwan to possess her body or not.

At the moment, it's just an idea, so I need to flesh it out a bit more, but hopefully it will work.

Uh... Wow. I never expected to get this much interest. Excluding you, Aura, we have ten people that I know are interested, nine of which have posted. Ten people is more then enough if I want this place to run smoothly. I'll ask the last person who is interested to if they still want to join, and if not, you can have their spot. If they do end up joining, I'll put you on reserve, and you can replace the first person to drop out.

Okay, so, I'm going to post the bare bones of my charries, and there's still a bit that I'm working through to figure out entirely; but for the most part they are done.

Decard is an Umbreon who is gifted with technology, most notably, with Magitek. While Umbreons are generally tier seven because they are small, quadrupedal Pokemon, Decard has managed to raise his social status closer to tier three; similar to other quadrupeds with a natural ability to function on their hind legs. Through trial and error, he has managed to create an artificial way to function on his hind legs, and also an ability to use tools in his forelimbs ( the actual means that he uses to do so are what I'm still figuring out ^^; We can discuss it in chat or something >>; ) He is a member of the Velit Military, and while he was forced to join as a low level soldier to be nothing more than a grunt, he has managed to gain some status thanks to his natural talent and his intelligence.

Lysander is a Poliwrath and Lysander's right hand man and close friend. While Decard isn't entirely useless in a fight, his talents lie in his intelligence. So, while Decard is the brain, Lysander is the brawn. The Poliwrath is by no stretch of the imagination stupid, but he leaves the thinking up to Decard and focuses instead on performing the physical sides of their assignments. His choice of weapon are gauntlets that have been infused with magitek, thanks to Decard, and a broad sword that he wears at his side. The two are nigh inseparable.

As far as what rank they are in the military and whatnot, I figure that I'll need to talk to someone about it, since I don't want to just give them ranks or whatever. But yeah, that's my awful bio :3

Look what I did!

Okay, so this is the map I have in planning for Velit.

Black Lines: Black are the peacetime borders of Velit, the countries that make up the Confederation, and the countries surrounding it.

Red Lines: Red Lines mark the edges of territory taken by the world's combined military.

Purple Lines: Purples lines are the opposite of Red lines, they show territory the Velit Confederation has taken.

Blue Lines: The sole blue line on the map marks a major river of Velit's, the Tungsten River. The valley it runs through are the only break in the mountain chain around Kelvos and the inner cities.

Brown areas: Brown areas on the map mark the Golden Desert, created by the mountains surrounding the inner cities.

Light Green Areas: Light Green areas are plains.

Green Areas: Darker green areas mark what was once a large Rainforest that filled the entire crater.

Blue Areas: Just as Blue lines mark major rivers the two large blue areas are the Great Sea (Inside the crater) and the Quillian Ocean.

Gray Lines: The gray-ish lines are the Lightning Rail, which connects Kelvos, Willisville, and Alterny.

The marked cities are the major ones, there are other, smaller ones, that don't appear.

Ultra simple character people go o:

Bruce Doker-
Bruce.png

A Hitmonlee with little regard for others, Bruce is well aware of his own status and that of those around him. However, if he has one good quality, it is that he judges others based entirely on what he thinks of them, and has little regard for the rankings unless he needs to abuse them. To that end, he has made friends with his bodyguard, Dominic, one of very few whom he respects and considers an equal. When and if he must enter combat, Bruce does not carry any weapons, and prefers to enhance his strength and speed to attack with his species famed leg power.

Dominic Rhodes-
Dominic.png

A Rhydon and bodyguard to Bruce, Dominic seems (and can be) intimidating, but in reality he is overall softer than his employer. In his job defending Bruce and other combat situations, Dominic makes use of a large axe, and favors earth and fire magics.

Kenshi-
Kenshi.png

An odd, young Farfetch'd, Kenshi was born outside the society that exists now, making him a wild Pokemon. He has no real knowledge of the society he has stumbled upon, not knowing his species is considered to be a farm animal. Despite this, he has acquired a simple katana, and now wanders the city and area around it, surviving, and mostly living the same way he did when he lived in the wild.

hnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggg my life I am putting this here now

Okay let's see

Drust: A mercenary who had, before being approached by a certain terrorist group, meandered along without an agenda to speak of. Level-headed and cool-tempered, he accepted the Black Ops recruitment without complaint. Talented with ranged weapons, you'll also find him particularly dangerous up close and personal when you've become acquainted with the tempered and reinforced bladed growths on his elbows.

Fulton: Drust's proud, hard-headed Swellow companion. Though his standing in society it notably lower than that of his partner, the large bird is still capable of holding his own in both combat and other less confrontational encounters in public. Though he loathes to perform it, one of his main duties is that of playing messenger for Drust. His revenge for this is the insistence of riding the gallade's shoulders when the pair travel on foot. Needless to say, the sight of the two lumbering along like a twisted totem is intimidating, to say the least.

Isolde: An intimidating, hot-headed bisharp with an attitude and the motivation to make her a respectable threat on behalf of the World Military. She may not have the head or patience for strategy, but nimbleness and brute strength make up for her short-comings. For the most part. She's still a highly volatile personality with the veneer of someone far more controlled and reserved hiding the truth in those pretty eyes.
