Yeah, so you'll start out in the towns sector, and go to either the Big Cities such as Starlight and Space City, just to meet new people (no gyms here), or to the Plains sector and face Praira.
All the sectors with gyms (in order from weakest to strongest): Plains, Beach, Volcanic Islands, Mountains, Forest, Tundra, Desert, Jungle. Note that you can't enter the wasteland without a HazMat suit, so you'll have to go back through the big cities to reach the Desert.
