Game Corner in European Platinum Removed

In a startling turn of events, it's been discovered that the Game Corner, a staple mini-game within the Pokemon series, has been nixed within the European release of Pokemon Platinum.

While the building is still within the game, and remains untouched, the machines can not be played. Instead, interacting with certain machines merely gives you between 5 and 20 coins similar to finding coins on the floor - you can only do this once every day, however. All references to actually playing the machines or winning money has also been removed.

Nintendo has made no indication concerning any reason why they have taken such a surprising step in this localisation, but we have reached out to them for an answer and will keep you updated if we can.

Now that such an act has happened, however, does this spell the end for the traditional Game Corner in the Pokemon games? Or are we just going to have to pay the "Living in Europe Tax" and miss out from now on?

Check out the topic for the full in-game script that reveals this startling fact.

To stop the forums breaking because of the RSS feed on the sidebar, I'm just gonna copypasta the entire first post here as well:

Team Galactic, yes, I have a hunch

... Game Over? How can this be?

Beauty walking around
I'll explain how the slot machines
work at this Game Corner.

During regular play, you should
stop the reels from the left.

During the bonus round, watch
where CLEFAIRY points and stop
the reels in that order.Hi! Let me tell you a little
bit about the Game Corner!

There's a very good reason to try
and collect a lot of coins here!

You see, next door, you can exchange your Coins for Technical Machines!

Man with spiky hairA friend in my group scored a ton of
Coins here.

Why mess with a good thing?
I'll try the same spot, too!Recently, my friends keep beating

I come here to let off some steam.

Did you battle the Gym Leader?

She happens to be my daughter.
She's some kind of tough!

Ok, I have to admit that I suck at the slot machines, I can't do a single thing right with it. This is one of the most ludicrous things I've read though, are you serious? There have been complaints floating around about the game corners for a while now, but why in this version of the gmae and why in Europe only?

Did the EU Commission say it was passing one of it's fangled laws, since the can no longer dictate how straight our bananas have to be?

Nonsense, utter and total nonsense.

Europe must really have some bad gambling addictions :p

Jokes aside, a part of me isn't overly surprised. It's like newer programming aimed at younger individiuals avoiding smoking and gun-related references. Gambling is another one of those wary topics for parents, so maybe this really is a move to get rid of the game corner entirely for future releases? Still, if that is true, seems pretty mean that they chose to use Europe as the test run.

Guess we won't know until the next time this does/doesn't happen (or they give us a formal answer. That'd be nice).

After they changed the Gambler to the Gamer in FR/LG (and then to the PI in DPP), this move seems like the next step.

...though I thought it would have happened in the US, not Europe. Huh.

Maybe there was a glitch with the game corner, so they had to change it? Similar as to why the Safari Zone couldn't be accessed in GSC? Idk. I feel bad that Europe can't use the game corner. :( I never use it, but it's supposed to be there. I feel bad for those who like to use it. It's better to play w/ the reels in the game than go to a real casino. By playing the reels in Pokemon has convinced me to not go gambling. (I'm not very good. I give up easily. I hope they don't get rid of the game corner in HG/SS....)

That is quite a disappointment. However, the main question on my mind is where does TM64 now reside seeing as you can't win it there.

To be honest, the version of the game corner that was removed was really not my thing. It was like because they needed something new, they overcomplicated the whole system with the clefairy bonus round. It boggled my mind.

But that really sucks. If they were going to take it away, they should have taken the game corner away entirely and added something different for the space. Random coins each day sounds really not worth it.. too much work for not a lot. Kind of corny to get rid of the option but KEEP the place.

I agree with Katie, though. The creators may be getting angry responses from parents saying that they're encouraging gambling. But honestly, many RPGs seem to have them as bonus games.

I can't wait for atheists to start complaining about the use of religion in EVERY RPG. Worse yet, religious groups finding the use of religion in such a manner offensive (ie EVIL religious cults).. They'll rip the game apart if they try and remove THAT. *Thinks about Lunar, Final Fantasy, Tales and any other utterly epic RPG based around religion being evil* :p

This has nothing to do with design choices or GameFreak.

This is purely censuring from NOE.

You can get all the prizes as normal - the only difference is that there's no actual game to play to win them. You just find the coins randomly.

Alex, I believe you got TM 64 by getting at least 10 bonus rounds in a row on the slots. As that's not possible in the European version, Xatu was wondering how you got it now.

According to Bulbapedia, the Explosion TM is now purchasable like any other TM at the Game Corner.
I see. Well you all get a much easier TM then. I'll probably be begging for one of those on wifi sometime come fall when I actually have wifi again. (I never could figure out those stupid bonus rounds.)

:-\ I know
HG and SS wouldn't be gold and silver remakes without all the good old stuff, even though no one really likes the game corner.

Wow, this really is surprising. I agree with TBA, I would've expected this from the US, not Europe. Unlike most people here, I adore the Game Corner and I win a huge of my coins rather than buying them all. It doesn't take to much time to rack up a ton. I find the slots in DPP a trillion times better than the ones of the past, and much easier to win. I mean, the ones in GSC and FRLG were mediocre and the ones in RSE just sucked.

Ahem, I digress.

But yeah, this may well be the future for all Pokemon games yet to be released. I would still be disappointed if it did happen though.

It is disappointing to hear news of removal of another mini-game in Platinum. Don't you guys miss the little Clefairy instructing you where to point? It's sad to see things come and go in Pokemon games, especially in Euorope.

Stel, I completely agree.

Way to go, parents. Hide your children from the reality of the world, make it forbidden and what do you get? Nutso teens on the loose with freedom and a miserable and frustrated fanbase of adult gamers.

That's bullsh*t! Who gives a f*ck if there's gambling in Pokemon?! What the hell has the god damn world come to?! Christ... I wonder what drugs those r*t*rded b*stards were doing?!

Sometimes I wonder if the world will be screwed sooner than later.... I mean COME ON! Getting rid of one of the staple mini-games in a KIDS' video game?! If I were in Europe, I'd be pissed to the point of wanting to KILL!

I'm a little frightened.. What a reaction. O___O

(And sorry if I insulted any "teens" with my previous post. I was stereotyping with the worst case scenario.)

Just stumbled over this thread, and just register me for this too...
It probably happened for the safety of the youth... since gambling makes addicting... blah blah blah...
Nonsense if you ask me... why so late? The slot machines where in the previous Pokémon versions too.
It was still in D/P... It's actually annoying... our "beloved" F.R.G. already strengthened the laws for games/movies for 18+ content with violence and weapon usage... after the happening in the school in Erfurt a few years ago and the same in... er... I forgot the place name...
