A brand new start Discussion

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED!
This thread is for those participating in my RP to discuss what they want to happen next and generally throw about ideas and whatnot. Just so you know I'm also looking for at most 2 more people to join in. So if you want to, please post a character bio here using the usual template along with an idea on how we'd meet.

Anyway, setting! This RP takes place in Kalos, and is going to be a general slice of life pokemon adventure where we travel the different towns on our journey as pokemon trainers. As a trainer, you'd of course have your pokedex, which in this acts as a personal datapad for the trainer, serving as official identification as a registered pokemon trainer, enabling efficient exchange of wagered money as well as sanctioning battles between opponents, recording wins and losses into the regional database, and of course as an encyclopedia on all pokemon scanned among other things.
Pokemon battles are regulated by the pokemon league, and can only occur in areas set aside for matches within city/town limits, but anywhere in the routes and wilds as long as they're registered and sanctioned by the League.
It's 5 years after the events of X&Y. Team Flare is a husk of its former self and the remaining members have gone into hiding, only attacking very weak targets and are essentially bandits now. This has created a power vacuum in Kalos'es criminal underworld, one that Team Rocket - a multi regional group - are invested in filling. Right now they're keeping their heads down. As being practically unknown in the Kalos region, they plan on staying that way until they're fully set up, but for now they're setting up cells in the different cities and towns, and probing the local authorities for any weaknesses whilst cataloging any potential targets and new recruits until their Kalos headquarters gets set up.
Anything else related to world building can be discussed in the thread and will be added later.

Name: Katrienne Llewellyn LaForce, aka "Kit"
Gender: Female
Hometown: Laverre City
Age: 16
Height: 5'1"
Weight: 130lbs

Hair: Deep mahogany brown and impossibly curly. When straightened it would reach well below her waist, but in its natural state it springs up to just under her shoulder blades with afro-level tenacity. She's tried innumerable styles and taming techniques, but typically goes no further than using a simple back satin ribbon as a headband to keep it it out of her eyes.

Eyes: Violet and almond shape, very much in contrast with her fawn brown skin

Clothing: Calf-length black flowy dress with a wide, circular cut neck and extra long bell sleeves that Kit has sewn pockets into. She also wears her mother's pendant, a wrought-silver amulet that clasps around a piece of amethyst crystal

Identifying Marks: Kit has a birth mark in the center of her forehead about the circumference of a pencil eraser. It is concave and circular, resembling a pock mark or the full moon, if you ask her grandmother.

Build: At 5'1" Kit has reached her full height. As a kid she was petite but clumsy, constantly tripping over her own feet. Through adolescence and her grandmother's care she has become curvier, bordering on plump. Her clumsiness has remained with her and is an ongoing obstacle in her daily adventures.

Personality: Kit is naturally inquisitive and compassionate. She has a burning love for Pokémon and will always take any opportunity to spend time with them, wild or no. She is a vegetarian but she doesn't pressure other people to join her. Because of her past, she is especially untrusting of men and has a much tougher time opening up around them. The last 8 years with her mother's family have groomed her into a much more studious individual, and she keeps a detailed journal with her impressions and observations of new people, pokemon, plants, and places she encounters. Despite this she is often very playful and a bit naive. She has an upbeat sense of humor and is much quicker to make a joke at her own expense than anothers. She is quick tempered in that she very easily becomes frustrated, especially when limited by her own skill or inexperience. She is generally not confrontational but she will hold a grudge indefinitely and if pushed to her limits she will stand up for herself. The exception to the rule is Pokémon and she will fight tooth and nail with little encouragement for one who is being abused or neglected. Overall, she comes across as an airy, sweet personality if not a bit scatter-brained or for lack of a better term, derpy. Looks can be deceiving though and she does take the spiritual side of her personal training and her connection to Pokémon and the world around her very seriously. She is a reliable source of help, be it magical or no, and will truly go the distance for a friend. She considers cat-like Pokémon her favorite and collects anything cat-themed she may come across. She dreams of being the first Pokémon League Champion to win with an entire team of cat Pokémon.

Skills: Kit is an apprentice from a long line of female witches. They are powerful psychics who live in and protect Laverre City and the ancient clock tower tree within. Despite the name "witch", their power really only presents itself in the form of psychic abilities, typically limited to telekinesis, telepathy, and skrying. These sort of powers are not unheard of in the world of Pokemon, for example the Saffron City gym leader Sabrina. Kit has been training her psychic abilities since coming to live with her grandmother 8 years ago, however she is by no means a prodigy. She can only communicate telepathically with those who are extremely close to her, namely her Pokémon. Moving the smallest of objects with her mind takes an immense amount of focus and energy, and she has never moved a living being. The object she is moving must be in her direct line of sight. She has had very minimal success in skrying and ultimately her only glimpses into the future have come rarely through meditation and not under her control. The final ability accompanying Kit's witchy DNA is more of an evolutionary mutation. Because their brains are so psychically attuned, they simply cannot shut down to sleep. In order to remain sane, Kit and her family instead enter into a very deep meditation. Although this may seem to be a great advantage, she must meditate as regularly and as long as the average person sleeps and as sometimes proves very dangerous, she can only awaken on her own when her energy is repleted or by an intense psychic connection, such as the link between Kit and her Pokemon.

Past: Kit spent the first 7 years of her life with her mother, Aveline, in Lumiose city. They never had much, but Kit rarely noticed as her days were spent making friends at school, learning about Pokemon, and, at home, being showered with affection by her young mother. Her father, Aveline had told her, had been a very nice young man, with dark skin like hers and big hands and a bigger smile. He had left before Kit was born and she always saw sadness in her mothers face when she got to that part. The girl had no idea where he went, or why, or even who the rest of their family was. Only that her mother couldn't be with her family because she had disobeyed them. Still, life was relatively peaceful for the two. One evening shortly after Kit's 7th birthday, Aveline never returned to their small apartment after work. Kit spent a restless night, though she had never been a peaceful sleeper, waiting by the door for her mother's arrival. The moment never came. She spent a couple of days in the apartment, eating through what food they had and waiting, terrified. She knew no numbers to call and she couldn't bear to go to school and miss her mother's return. Her teachers grew worried and contacted the authorities, and before long Kit was placed into temporary foster care while the search for Aveline began. She was never found and within a few months Kit became a well-known face to many in the system as a troublesome child. Most never believed it upon meeting her. Yes she was quiet, with a few frustrated outbursts, but what child wouldn't under the circumstances? Still, family after family begged to be relieved of her, all sporting similar stories of emotional outbursts, leaving the room for one moment and returning to find furniture and belongings toppled over in their spots. She rarely slept and when she did, her nightmares kept anyone else from resting. As she was uprooted time and again, Kit began to close up inside herself. It wasn't until she was placed outside the city with a Pokemon breeder's family that she began to relax. She lost herself in studying and caring for the Pokemon and for a while nothing strange seemed to happen. On her 8th birthday she received a very special gift--an egg, from her caretakers--as well as some wonderful news: her mother's family had been located and she was going to have a home. Kit was very sad to leave the Pokemon and the kind breeders behind, but the prospect of family and possibly feeling close to her mother again allowed her to feel some sort of excitement. She and her egg were moved to Laverre City where she came to learn a secret that would change her life forever. Throughout that year her powers had been growing. She had stood frightened, countless times, as objects soared around the room of their own accord. But how could she tell anybody that? And so she had allowed the families who cared for her to believe that she was responsible. Suddenly in the presence of her true family, everything was explained. Kit was from a long line of powerful psychics, as deeply rooted in Laverre City as the ancient tree around which it was built. They lived in a large manor house just North of the main town, not so far that they could not see the Great Tree's branches twisting up above the rooftops below. They served the city as its unknown protectors, her grandmother had told her upon first showing her the home. Though she was frightened, Kit was soon engulfed in the love and acceptance of countless aunts, cousins, great aunts, great-great aunts, and above them all, Grandmother who served as matron of the clan along with her ancient and impossibly wise Espeon. "There are no husbands or fathers," Kit had observed, her heart heavy at the thought of her own long lost parents. Grandmother had simply offered her the smile Kit came to recognize as one reserved solely for her--a smile mixed with regret and sadness, but also pride and love. "Men always leave, my kitten." She had said, patting her springy hair. Kit never questioned it again, but she also never forgot. As she grew, Kit fell into line with the rest of her relatives, honing her psychic abilities under the close supervision of her grandmother. By day she would attend lessons in telepathy, telekinesis, and divination. The evenings they would spend together in the large open hall below the first floor, meditating as a family, lending the Great Tree their strength, the elders would say. Kit was neither hopeless nor especially adept at any of the family skills, but she quickly became known for her great connection with and understanding of Pokemon. Many of the "graduated" ladies kept one Psychic-type Pokemon for a familiar, a trite old witchy ideal but one actually quite practical for them. So long as they bonded intensely with their Pokemon, the psychics could attune with them to strengthen their own abilities. As she reached her 16th year, many paths lay before Kit. She would always have a place at the manor and in the village, but she and Grandmother both knew where her heart pulled her. Kit wanted, no, needed to train and serve Pokemon, and so, with her Espurr, Sona, adoringly by her side, Kit set off on her own Pokemon journey with high hopes of building a team, making lots of human and Pokemon friends, and maybe, just maybe, learning the fate of her parents.

Family: Mother, Aveline; Father, unknown; Grandmother, Adrienne; various aunts, cousins, and other female relatives.

Pokemon: Espurr "Sona"
Gender: Female
Lv: 15
Ability: Keen Eye
Special Features: She wears a thin purple collar with a small silver bell attached, which she seems to enjoy hearing when she walks around
Moves Known: [Scratch][Covet][Light Screen][Confusion]
History: Since before hatching, Sona has spent every moment of the day with her partner, Kit. She follows her or is carried everywhere the girl goes and she sleeps curled up in Kit's lap while she meditates. Sona is a reasonably powerful Pokemon with a lot of spirit and loyalty to her trainer. She is immensely protective of Kit and has been known to frighten away other Pokemon out of jealousy. Despite this, she is not an aggressive Pokemon, merely mischievous, and her favorite pastime, other than sleeping, is playing/training with Kit in their special way.

[[[I hope this isn't too out there for you guys, I definitely don't want it to seem
like I have an O.P. character or anything. I tried to make it really clear that
she's not exceptionally good at any of this, it's just physically part of her DNA
that she can do these things. As I also mentioned above, these sorts of
powers in humans are definitely cannon and you can check out Saffron City
gym leader Sabrina for evidence :p Anywho, lemme know what you think
before I start posting!!]]

So we have the base brat, the karate kid, and the psychic. Interesting group we'd have here.

So, how do you think we'd meet up? We're all in Aquacorde town at the moment, so would you be there, or up ahead further...?

I really want Skitty! They can be found on the other side of Santalune city but the Alpha Sapphire pokedex entry says that they live in the holes in trees in forests. Would Kit reasonably bump into one in the forest then even if it's not listed til route 4? O.o

Let's wait on that one. We can do a thing where we search for your skitty then, ok?

That reminds me. EVERYONE! What do you want your characters to accomplish in this rp? Also do you want a reoccouring villain like antagonist in this, or just have it as slice of life?

How about a rival who just kinda mocks our progress and tends to be a step ahead of us? And then down the road if we get bored s/he could team up with Team Flare or whomever and try to steal our Pokemon? I'm good with slice of life as well though so no worries.

I'm good waiting on the Skitty. I understand not wanting to cluster everything all together. Kit's goals are really just to learn as much as she can about Pokémon and earn her badges. If I do anything with her parents it'll be more of a personal thing and I will definitely talk about it here beforehand.

I don't think a rival would be really good if he/she steals Pokemon. Like the rest of the idea, though. So s/he's basically a Gary/Paul combo. A cocky, loudmouth douche who treats his/her Pokémon like tools.

...Yaaaaaay.

OK back to CS. Will have it by end of day.

Right. I definitely didn't mean that the person would start out theivin'. More like, they advance with us and ultimately fail because of how shitty they treat their pokemon and are inevitably woo'd to the dark side, if you will.

I like the whole "being a smeg head but not stealing pokemon" thing. Though I do have an idea for the setting. Again, we'll only go through with this if everyone's fine with it, but here's my headcanon.

Thoughts?

Obtaining control of THREE regions is a sign that Team Rocket is very powerful at this point. I like it.

As for the rival thing: Would we not even view him/her as a rival at that point? Just a sad human being who won't leave us alone?

Yeah, but then they get recruited into Team Rocket.

Well, Tailon has left. though I may have someone to replace him.

Name: Aran Emetto Ral
Gender: Male
Hometown: Rustboro City, Hoenn (Don't worry, he travels)
Age: 14
Height: 5'4"
Weight: 142 lbs
Hair: Being a ginger, his hair is a bright orange that's even brighter in sunlight. It's long enough to cover his eyes if not moved aside, and is somewhat frizzy/fluffy/puffy despite still being straight. It's similar to Trevor from X and Y but to a lesser extent, and is a little messier, too.
Eyes: Yellow-Green
Clothing:
-A slightly oversized, dark green, open, no zipper coat/hoodie with an unusually long tail on the end
-A fancy looking pair of black leather gloves
-Typical, worn out hiking boots
-Sweat pants or cargo pants; either black, grey, or white
-A pair of strange, ellipse shaped, Orange tinted goggles usually hung around his neck or above his forehead.
Identifying Marks: His puffy orange hair and tired but strangely intense eyes that seem far older than Aran himself.

Build:
He used to be quite pudgy, but after undergoing intense exercise for the past four years, he became unnaturally muscular and athletic for his age. Unfourtunately, this ultimately stunted his growth, and he is not expected to gain another inch in his life. Still smaller than an average person and only exercising to relieve stress, Aran has absolutely no idea how to defend himself in combat; he hopes to keep it that way.

Skills:
With so much trivial knowledge about Pokémon biology and behavior, Aran doesn't even really need the Pokédex(he carries it around anyway for other uses and because it's the law for trainers to do so). However, he seems to possess even less common knowledge of other subjects than normal people.

Personality:
Being nearly impossible to provoke or anger, Aran's a mild guy, which is ironic considering his typical expression. One will assume that whatever created the intensity in his eyes had a far more significant impact than a simple insult, like some unforgiving past or some tragic event. This is not actually the case. The truth is that this is simply the face Aran makes while thinking, which he does most of the time and thus almost never seems to express any other emotion. He's sometimes so immersed in his mind that he doesn't know what's happening around him. He'll often begin staring into space mid-conversation, and he doesn't deny it when some consider it rude. When engaged in a topic of great interest to him, however, he will pay undivided attention as if his life depended on it. Despite all his knowledge on Pokémon, Aran doesn't proudly show it off whenever the time is right. In fact, he doesn't see much importance in it at all other than for his own interests, as if he doesn't even consider it to be worth much. Even stranger, he refuses to become a Pokémon professor. Nevertheless, he is ever curious about Pokémon and their relationships with humans, and he's always subtlety observing them. Aran is also a very unbiased individual, confused about the existence of so many steriotypes in society (Lass, psychic, youngster, ace trainer, hiker, etc.)

Family: Petra Ral- mother, Levi Emetto- father, Trevor- cousin, Gardenia- Aunt

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pokemon:
Name: Sorex
Species: Sandshrew
Gender: Male
Ability: Sand Rush
Level: 7-8 ish I guess
Special Characteristics: Shiny
Moves Known:
•Scratch
•Defense Curl
•Poison Sting
•Rollout
•Sand Attack
Past: (doing both of them at once) Unique minds don't always spring from unique experiences. Aran seemed to have a very normal childhood growing up in the booming yet ancient-looking Rustboro City. His mother, Petra Ral, is a geologist working for the Devon Corporation; she has always been a tomboyish woman who's vivid descriptions of incredible landscapes inspired Aran's will to travel. His father, Levi Emetto, worked for the Pokémon Center, but he travelled to other areas as a homecare nurse for people and and their Pokémon living in isolated areas. He's always been a clean freak. One day while drilling in Rusturf Tunnel for research purposes, Aran's mother found a shiny Sandshrew curled up beneath the Earth. All the other Pokémon in the area had already been cleared out; therefore, worried that the young and injured Sandshrew wasn't prepared to be let go, she took him home under a legal transaction, officially a part of the family. Aran was only seven or eight at the time, so no one particularly claimed ownership of the shrew Pokémon. It was Aran, however, who named him 'Sorex', simply meaning shrew in a language he couldn't remember the name of. Over time, Sorex became more attached to Aran; he was the only one who didn't treat him like a pet but as if he was his own brother. His parents would begin to question not only Aran's relationship with Sorex, but also his obsession with Pokémon battles on television. He would just stare for hours and slowly shake his head as if dissatisfied. By his tenth birthday his parents decided that becoming a trainer would be the best path for Aran, as he seemed to have an interest in it; well, that and the fact that he rarely left the house even in such a city as Rustboro. After an unpleasant experience, however, the chubby ginger came running back in tears. Having already graduated from the prestigious Trainer's school early, Aran acted for the next couple years as a substitute teacher for younger students when one of the faculty or even Roxanne was away at the time. This was also then he began exercising. When he attempted to start his journey a second time, he was more successful. After two years, Aran originally only travelled to explore new places and meet some members of his spread-out family. As a result, he barely fought any trainers and Sorex had barely gained any strength. By the time he said goodbye to his aunt Gardenia and headed for Kalos to find his cousin Trevor, however, Aran had officially begun his career as a Pokemon trainer only a few months prior...
How character meets with rest of group: Arrives to Aquacorde on a cruise ship and is likely going to remain in the Kalos region for a long time.
Ah, good point. I mistakenly thought Aquacorde was a harbor by the sea. So a ferry, then. He would have taken a cruise ship to get to the region itself, though.
So... just gonna say, Espurr's a bit of a brat and she's 100% inspired by my solid gray cat, Sona. I also have plans for the Skitty, but it will mostly be all about eating and not as big of a presence. I haven't decided if Sona even has a Pokeball... I guess when Kit got her stuff she had to talk Espurr into getting into one for the first time so that she could be her official battling Pokemon? Lol I know yall probably don't care I'm just rambling.
Not at all. Lol jk. I mean, we all kinda threw in rediculous amounts of details into our character sheets, so it's cool. And that's interesting, actually. I don't think a Pokémon necessarily NEEDS to have a Pokeball, such as in Ash's Pikachu's case. We could just assume that there's some sort of written contract declaring that Sona is a trained Pokemon owned by Kit.
I think a trainer card with Sona on it would be all that is needed, actually. Not sure exactly how Page sets up the laws in this.
I know in the show for certain things they have to turn in their Pokeballs. I dunno. I think Sona would do it on certain occassions. Also so obvi Sona and Kit have a very strong psychic link as they meditate together and have been together since Espurr hatched. How would yall feel about sometimes utilizing her to loosely translate Pokémon? Like if something big happens and a Pokémon is trying to explain if Sona is able to understand them she explains to Kit in the form of telepathic pictures. So she's not directly speaking/thinking human words.
Not sure about Page, but I'm certainly fine with it. It wouldn't surprise me if many trainers use their psychic types to translate what other Pokemon are saying.
Also, that means that our characters' Pokémon will have vivid dialogue as well. So that's pretty cool.
I think we're good to go ahead, however, I don't know where she's aiming to be exactly. Before they were in Aquacorde..
I deleted my older post because after Tailon left and deleted his, it made her double post. So I thought i'd might as well start afresh. Go ahead and post! Let's do it so that we all have a turn order when posting.
Also about the pokeball thing, I think that pokemon would have to have pokeballs to be recognised as being owned by trainers, as they would record the pokemon's information and allow it not to be caught by other pokeballs. They don't have to be in there all the time, just as long as they have one.
And I think having the paychic types do a bit of translating is a good idea! In a rp on a very old website, I once had an accountant gardevoir who would exclusively communicate in telemetry and would translate the same way.
Yeah, I think she would've introduced the Pokeball at the same time she got her Dex and only uses it when Sona's out of commission or they're doing something official that requires it.
I'm all game for the psychic translation. And I hope you like my post! I'd already put it up a few hours before your reply just above so I hope you've gotten a chance to read it. :3
For some reason I had not realized you had posted until just recently! And lol with the Froakie! XD
But yeah, sorry that my reply will be kinda late. Doing it right now.
Well, it isn't great, but it is done. Let me know what you all think. I'm still working out a way for him to meet up, but it shouldn't be too much of a problem!
Name: Edwyn Tully
Gender: Male
Hometown: Santalune City, Kalos
Age: 19
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 155 lbs
Hair: Purple and short, but not buzzed.
Eyes: Blue
Clothing: He wears different T-Shirts usually with jeans and sneakers. His clothes are, on the whole, unremarkable. He carries expensive sun glasses that he wears occasionally.
Identifying Marks: Pale with light purple hair
Build: Athletic
Personality: Edwyn wasn’t quiet as a child. He had many friends, and seemed to be a person that the children his age liked to follow. That was before his family moved to Santalune City when he was 6. Edwyn developed a more calm personality, making only a few friends, but being really close with them. He grew to be very intelligent, the top of his class. He became extremely interested in pokemon, wanting to study them in further depth and aspiring to become a professor of pokemon.
Skills: He is extremely intelligent, making it into the prestigious pokemon school in Santalune. His survival skills are particularly lacking, but he enjoys playing music and has an eye for people who lie.
Past: Born in Ambrette Town, his family moved to Santalune when he was 6. This had a particularly harsh effect on his social life. He thrived intellectually, however, becoming the top student in his grade. He received his first pokemon, a Chespin, but he never went on a journey like many of his friends did. Instead, he remained in school, graduating at the top of his class before moving on to the most prestigious school in Kalos. After studying there for a year and a half, he applied for an internship with Professor Sycamore, and was promptly accepted.
Family: His father works for an affiliate of Silph Co. in Santalune in Kalos, and his mother works for a hospital in Lumiose City.
Pokémon Owned:
Chespin (Pluto)
Gender: Male
Ability: Overgrow
Lv: 15-ish
Special Features: None really. Pluto was chosen by Edwyn specifically because Edwyn had found the pokemon to be intelligent, like him.
Moves Known: Tackle, Rollout, Vine Whip, Bite, Leech Seed, Pin Missile
History: Edwyn chose Pluto as his pokemon when he was 10 years old. His parents wanted to make sure he got his first pokemon around the same time everyone else was getting theirs. Since then, the two have become very close. Both of them being intelligent, their battling still emphasizes thought and strategy. They also both enjoy sticking their nose in the air to people they feel are less than them. Edwyn and Pluto have fought some battles, with friends and as part of his curriculum at school.
@Acroticus I think it's just fine! And yeah, I wouldn't worry about meeting up. Making up things like that as you go is part of RPing, after all!
@Monique Page It's your turn now, right? Or do turn orders get weird when conversations get involved? Or are we gonna wait for Edwyn now?
