Yeah, it's early morning for the UK people (we've all just gone to work/school), and the Americans are asleep - it's the dead of night for them. We don't have that many members in the Asian timezones to fill the numbers - so it gets quiet.

Guests are actual people that aren't logged in. Robots are scripts - like Google's search spiders, for example.
